First, I will preach on the TEAM aspect of football. It’s natural for us to want to put ourselves before everything else. Football culture often sets us up and celebrates the me-first attitude.
So I have to retrain the player’s brains that football only works when a team is willing to work together for the greater good. I will come up with a team motto that highlights this, such as “For One Another” or “Team Over Me”.
Another motto for me as the coach is: "Don’t only speak it but live it." I will do drills that show the importance of different positional groups working together.
Here are some samples how to use your best defensive players.
If a linebacker type is the best defensive player, put him in the middle of the field. Stack him over top of a nose or d-tackle. This makes the defensive reads on this player super simple. Now he’s free to react and play football.
If your best defensive player is a d-lineman, you will call lots of double teams his way. You can free him up from the doubles by calling lots of stunts. Stunt your best d-lineman out of the double to the one-on-one block. This frees him up to make plays.
If your best player is a coverage guy, put him as the cover safety. This gives your coverage guy freedom to run around the field. He can assist on a WR you’re worried about or come down and make a run play.
