The perfect fan appreciation event serves multiple purposes. For starters coordinated free t shirts are a sure fire hit. I am a personal fan of black outs and white outs, commonly seen at college football games. Meaning, everyone in the stands gets an all black or all white shirt. The color synchronized stadium can intimidate the visiting team. Or, more creatively, some writing or pictorial designs could be incorporated if the shirts are placed in the seats before hand. Though this would require everyone sitting in their assigned seat and assumes no one gets greedy and swaps their assigned color for another.
Alternatively, fan appreciation could be easily expressed through a raffle system. Teams create so much merch that it would hardly be a drop in the bucket to give away a signed hat, glove, or jersey to a lucky 500 fans or so. And to make up for the other masses of people who didn't win, a hefty discount at the team shop could go a long way.
