11. Write a short biography or story about your player. This could include background about how they came to the ISFL and how they’ve done so far, a story about their role in an exciting game, or anything else related to their experience in the league. (Tier 2: 300 words, 5 TPE)
Tobias Worthington III grew up in a small town in Connecticut. Of course, he always loved sports and being a son of the Nutmeg State, he was a big fan of the UCONN Huskies basketball teams – both men’s and women’s. But his real love was football. Sure, he liked the contact of the sport, but he really appreciated the cerebral part of the game. He appreciated the intricate cat and mouse between offense and defense – each creating plays that would work in general situations, but especially the game-planning for specific opponents. This is likely what drew him to the quarterback position early on. Everyone on the field has to be up on strategy and their role in making the play work, but no one is as intimately involved as the QB.
It became clear early on that Tobias had a certain natural talent for the game and that he might have a professional career one day. It was also clear in the Worthington family that you didn’t put all your eggs in one basket. So, a second path was also a must. Tobias chose the study of language and literature with the idea of perhaps heading into teaching at the collegiate level.
When football scholarship offers started coming his way, Tobias chose to concentrate on going to the best academic school rather than the highest profile football school. He reasoned that if he were good enough to play professionally, he could eventually make it from anywhere even if he didn’t turn out to be a first rounder. But he wanted his academic career option to have the biggest play possible.
So, Tobias became an Eli and had a great career starting at QB for Yale in all but his freshman season.
Sure enough, he made a big enough splash and he was eventually drafted by the Minnesota Grey Ducks in the first round. After 5 seasons in Minnesota, the Copperheads also drafted him early and that is how Tobias Worthington III made it to the ISFL.
19. Your team has announced that they will be laying ground on a new stadium next season. What additions would you like to see included in it. (Tier 3: 150 words, 2.5 TPE)
Copperhead Stadium in Austin is a fine place to play football. It has a nice capacity of 75,000. The sight lines are clean and clear. The seats are about as comfortable as you can expect and who really sits much at a Copperhead game anyway?
The one thing it is missing is … snakes. Not the goofy mascots designed to entertain those not interested in football, but real live reptilian snakes.
To begin with, there should be a main snake room where as many different kinds of snakes as possible slither about in enclosures designed for maximum comfort. Of course, the centerpiece will be the Copperhead enclosure. In here there will be one copperhead for each person on the roster. But there should be small displays all over the concourse which feature a different snake paired with a copperhead.
Finally, there will be a giant copperhead constructed to circle the entire stands on field level. The head will have its mouth open wide for the Austin players to rush out of their locker room through.
26. if your player wasn't a professional in the ISFL/DSFL, what would they be doing instead? (Tier 3: 150 words, 2.5 TPE)
If Tobias Worthington III were not a professional football player, he would have become a college professor. In support of that ambition, Tobias accepted a football scholarship and attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut based on its academic reputation over its football prowess. Tobias’ chosen field was foreign language and literature and Yale is certainly strong in this area. Tobias is fluent in French, aided by a year of study abroad at the University of Rennes, and he planned to concentrate on the writers and poets of the period 1800-1850. Of course, he would also teach some beginning to advanced language courses in addition to literature.
In fact, Tobias has not truly abandoned this particular career path. He has noticed of late that he is just beginning to lose a step and he knows he can’t play football forever. Time catches up to even the best. So, Tobias is seriously considering going back to school and entering grad school to continue study beyond his BA from Yale.
