I came into this season in pretty good shape physically, but obviously I would need to improve as this is next level from college level ball.
Within 24 hours of being drafted, I was in the Pythons weight room talking to the trainers. They insisted I needed to bulk up if I wanted to see real success in this league. So it was all heavy weights, with a side of a high protein and calorie diet. By the time the season started, I had already added a significant amount of mass and was feeling pretty big. Definitely the biggest I have ever been in my life. The training staff had me stay on that regime for a couple of weeks into the season and it was showing results on the field. Pancakes were being served in large stacks game after game.
Once the training staff was satisfied with my size, the training shifted to focus more on my technique. This included footwork, hands, leverage and strategy to counter everything I may face. There was still heavy weight training, but things were much more balanced to maintain size and improve quickness. While much of my opponents have caught up with me on the sheer strength side of things, I've made steady improvements in all other areas.
I'm looking forward to the off-season program to see where training staff will want me to focus. It's been a really fun learning experience the whole way.
