(As told to the Bondi Beach Sentinel over High Tea)
Bertie: My first DSFL game, ah what a happy memory! To be frank with you, I did not expect to be picked up on waivers, as I was still working on my memoirs and not in a position to play football, but the Bucs decided to give me a chance once they heard about my *unconventional* past. At first, neither of us really thought this was more than an idle curiosity, but I was so taken aback at the physical prowess of my team mates that I decided I'd give it the old college try. I expected to be firmly on the bench, however, , and so I just put my head down and worked the drills, learned strategy and built my endurance. I remember that I was mixing a pink gin for the video coach when I got the call that I was being put into the starting lineup, and that I was going to be thrust into action later that same day! I became so nervous that I forgot to take my napkin off after lunch, and was doing drills for a solid 45 minutes in practice before someone told me. The game itself was incredible, a total departure from the Ivy League - an intoxicating mix of exhaustion, elation and some degree of frustration, since although I was able to modestly contribute to our offense, we were just pipped at the end, a 32-29 loss to Norfolk. The strength and power in the DSFL demands the very best out of everyone, and it's certainly opened my eyes to the importance of speed, endurance, and playing our systems to give ourselves the best chance to win. It's been a rough season, but I feel that my game sense is evolving, and I can't wait for the next game.
