1.The S43 Ultimini and Ultimus unsurprisingly went to the best teams in their respective leagues. The Portland Pythons won the Ultimini after an extremely dominant season and the Hawks were in the same boat. As a member of the Ultimini winning Pythons I feel qualified to explore how the team reached the run to the championship.
Portland had a strong team before the DSFL draft and only strengthened it through the draft. With the second pick in the draft Portland drafted safety Jamie Orion, and while his stats may not show it, he was central to the Pythons defense. In the second round, they drafted me, Jordan Bamford. Bamford served as the wr2 for the team and was crucial to the offense's success. In the third and fourth rounds, the Pythons made the key defensive additions of Xavier Moreno and Felix Waterman. In the 5th and 6th rounds, Portland got two of the biggest steals in the draft. First, they selected WR Mattrim Cauthon who served as the key deep threat for the Pythons. In the sixth round, they selected DROTY candidate Thor Dangerson who was one of the best linebackers in the league this past season.
After nailing the draft Portland entered the season with one of the best rosters in the league. Portland was loaded at every offensive position, Jay Cue III led the way at QB and a split backfield of star Eldroh Kove and emerging phenomenon Sean Aldrich was an unstoppable combo. Cue didn’t lack weapons with star veterans Sam Mercury, Huck Indarts, and Mike Gesicki as well as rookies Jorda Bamford and Mattrim Cuaton. Defensively, Portland was relying on rookies to step up and star CB Saveour Piethons to continue his great play.
Portland started the season with a dominant 37-14 victory over the Minnesota Grey Ducks in which POR WR Huck Indarts made 5 catches for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns. They followed it up with two more dominant victories to put them at 3-0 on the season. At this point in the season, the two undefeated teams were the Birddogs and the Pythons. It looked like the week 5 matchup between the two teams was going to be crucial. However, unexpectedly the Pythons were upset by the 1-2 Tijuana Luchadores 29-31 on the road. After this game, the Pythons went on a 4-game win streak which put them at 8-1. However, Portland was upset by BBB 3-34 in an extremely rough showing in week 10. In week 11, Tijuana came to Portland where POR got their vengeance with a 37-13 victory. The Pythons would lose to Dallas in week 12 and then win the last two games of the season.
Entering the playoffs Portland was the clear favorite to win the Ultimini. In the South, the top team was clearly the Dallas Birrdogs. In the Conference Championship Portland easily took care of the Kansas City Coyotes 31-14 with great showings from Jay Cue III, Sean Aldrich, and rookie Thor Dangerson. However, Dallas, the favorites in the south were upset by the 8-8 Tijuana Luchadores who would advance to the Ultimini through a great defensive showing to win 21-16.
Credit must be given to both team’s quarterbacks for both of their runs to the Ultimini. Jay Cue III popped of during the season with nearly 3400 yards along with 35 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions, and he looks like a front-runner for the MOP award. On the other hand, C.J. Breezy Jr. started the season exceptionally, looking like Cue’s competition for MOP. Breezy’s success didn’t last though, he finished the season with a great 3468 yards but his 22 touchdowns and 17 interceptions don’t help him. Basically, Breezy has the stat line of my quarterback in Madden.
The Ultimini itself was an extremely underwhelming affair for all the hype around it. The Pythons had a 33-0 lead by the end of the first half and cruised to a 33-10 victory. Lots of credit has to go to the Portland running backs Eldroh Kove and Sean Aldrich who combined for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns. Along with this the Portland defense was outstanding, rookie Felix Waterman had a pick-six, rookie Xavier Moreno had 3 pass deflections, and another pick, and finally rookie Oops All-Pro had 2 sacks.
Overall the S43 Ultimini showed that with a great roster, a team with a curse for losing Ultimini’s can actually win one. Portland’s combination of an unstoppable offense and elite defense was nearly unbeatable. Run it back season incoming?
