Tier 1, #7
I wanted to write some words on the idea and the realization of playing previously unpopular positions, or especially the "non meta" archetype. I think there is quite a lot of joy to be gained from playing these unpopular positions, and there are a few major reasons why they are unpopular in the first place. The easiest to dig into is they are not statistical darlings. For this one I'll look to my first player, a Tight End, where it seemed that based on the restrictions of the TE stats and the major importance of speed, it was simply just beneficial to the team to play a WR out of position in the TE slot rather than the TE itself. Now, I have to assume the league works towards reducing scenarios like this because that's horrible. There should be a benefit gained in playing players at their appropriate positions - maybe a cap savings could make the books work and not overly punish teams who don't have the ability to do so? It would probably bridge the gap a little bit. Back to the statistics.. I think I mis labelled this issue exactly, for Tight End specifically it should be "Not better than replacement". For statistics I want to touch a bit more on later, but look to my current position at OLine for that.
Now, my second player as a DT, I wanted to be useful to the team at mid earning. The sexy stat position for Defence was (and I think still is Line Backer), so I think naturally people are pulled to that position. However there are only so many spots available as linebacker, so players who want to carve out a spot for themselves should look towards the non major roles. There was the birth of the D line. Now I could have looked at the popular thing on creation, but I wanted to have fun, so at the time I chose to be the absolute largest unit possible. The reduction in speed likely played a role in reducing my overall career stats, but maybe it just meant others got the sack or the strip when I pressured. Who knows, the career got 4 rings which I think is absolutely phenomenal. This player I think was born from a want to have a space and be useful, that quickly evolved to wanting to put forward a Hall of Fame calibre career in a position that at the time of creating was pretty barren. Time will tell if I was able to achieve that goal, but one very curious thing happened during the career - teams seemed to fill up with high tpe stud Defensive Line anchors. The meta of the league seemed to tweak towards having one solid one and all of a sudden every team had their guy.
Now, back to the lack of stats on paper, or lack of screen time on the sim. Right off the bat I understand some folks really love the sim and want to see their dot. My way is not for you. I don't tune in to most sims, and I put no value on my dot, just the teams success, so the idea of creating a player where the only stat is really pancakes, and then selecting an archetype that kind of forces the positioning to not be the one to get the most pancakes is pretty counter intuitive. I think because of this choice, even if I manage to max earn, which right off the bat I'm not doing anyway, I won't be viewed as one of the best, or the fantasy darlings and because of this my name recognition and hall prospects are likely not happening. That's ok, I have a feeling that the build is going to help whichever team I end up with very well.
