10. My first act as commissioner would be to implement some clock changing rules that would make the games more exciting for fans and teams alike. We would move to the college football style clock operation. Outside of the final two minutes of the first and second halves, the clock would not stop after a first down but would stop inside two minutes in both of those situations. This would help make the final drives before halftime and the end of the game much more exciting with the chance for comebacks and chaos. Another thing we'd steal from college football is their "one foot in-bounds" rule to make something a catch. We currently have the rule where a player must have two feet inbounds for a catch to be valid, but that's simply too high a standard. In college, the one foot allows for more explosive offensive plays, more points, and simply makes the most sense. We shouldn't be doing things to limit more offense or excitement in our league - just the opposite. The next change I'd make is to expand the entire league. We're currently at 14 teams with two bloated divisions. It's simply too many teams in two few groupings. So what we'll do is expand to 16 total teams and separate each conference into two divisions. With four total divisions, we will more closely align ourselves with the NFL as well. This will also foster more serious and devout rivalries within each division with more games being played against your divisional foes and more at stake each time those teams suit up to play. Obviously the division winner of each league would get in as well as one more wildcard team. That would give us a total of six playoff teams and in the first round, the two teams with the best record would get a bye and then play the subsequent winners after that. These changes would increase the level of league interaction, increase offense, and make everything more exciting for fans both in the stadium and at home. (342)
29. For branding, it has to go to the New York Silverbacks. I am a huge fan of a location/mascot alignment as far as an actual callback to each other which is why New York is perfection. I know what you're thinking - there aren't any Silverbacks in New York! That's the genius of it. The concrete jungle, as the Big Apple is called, gives rise to the Silverback mascot in a seamless fashion. It's also that slight removal from the uber obvious that gives this one the edge for me. Not to mention the color scheme lines up perfectly with concrete buildings and a hint of vegetation from the Silverbacks' native homeland. In a world of birds, small mammals, and mascots that are far too often on the nose, having a derivative nickname is like a breath of fresh air. Plus, you can't forget how terrifying gorillas are in their own right. These creatures strike fear in everything they encounter, which is an awfully tough pill to swallow for opposing teams as they travel to New York. (177 words)
