6. The league has a rich and fascinating history, and our perspectives on it differ from person to person. In 600 words or more, describe any significant moment in ISFL or DSFL history, whether you were around for it or not. Describe the context, the significant members, and the events. What exactly made this event so famous (or infamous) and why does it deserve to be remembered? Events might include championship wins, the inducting of players to the hall of fame, or even a league scandal.
I want to take a moment to remember a team of the past that is no longer with us today. If you are new to the league, not gone into the history books much, you will know that the Cape Town Crash were not originally a team in the ISFL. In Season 2 of the ISFL, the league underwent its first expansion, moving from the original 6, Otters, SaberCats, Outlaws, Hawks, Yeti, Wraiths. After these 6, two new teams were added to the league, and much like the team that the Cape Town replaced, the New Orleans Second Line replaced the other team in this initial expansion.
The first team that was replaced, was a very quick replacement for the league. A team marred in controversy, the Las Vegas Legion were one of the two teams. For many, the Legion name has no meaning, this team existed for only a few seasons before their change into the team we know today, but their history is something that no team is able to match. Whether it was a bet to get a player to join the league after the season, quickly deemed unenforceable, to many people wreaking havoc on the league and then quickly leaving, the Legion struggled to find any footing and took on some of the most controversial figures in the league, both on and off the league. At one point we had a user writing about his player doing things on the sidelines that should not ever be written about, and that I will not repeat here. The Legion were a team of controversy, and the change sought to bring new life to the troubled expansion team, and it seems to have done just that as the Second Line name is synonymous with the ISFL now, and the Legion name is a name lost in time, for the betterment of the league.
The second team to be replaced, much later into its lifespan, was the Philadelphia Liberty. For the observant eye, I still have a signature on my page from the original expansion Liberty team, a team that had a much different expansion experience and much different results early on. While the Legion struggled to get off the ground, the Liberty had no such struggles, starting off strong and building a core that was able to push their ways to the playoffs, back when only two teams from each conference made the playoffs in a shorter season. As an integral member of the team, eventually becoming a GM, I saw guys in my same draft become cornerstones of the team, and then disappear, and I saw guys who were always able to be a crucial member of the team, such as Paul DiMirio, the greatest TE of all time. I even took advantage of that Legion bet that was made, where a guy said he would go join the Legion if he lost the bet (which he did). As it was deemed unenforceable, I went and traded for that player and gave the Legion a pretty good deal in a 3 way trade in the process.
The Liberty struggled, straight up, we couldn't get a QB in those initial seasons, to the point that I actually took advantage of position switching at the time in order to secure that position, eventually being the push we needed. In season 7, we were able to win the first Ultimus, after 2 teams (the Outlaws and Otters) 3peated to start the league. Those days of the Liberty are fond memories for me, and I was not perfect by any means, but it still stings a little to see the Liberty name gone and buried, but I get why one would want to rebrand any team, not just them. I know they struggled later on, but I want to remember the good times that got me into the league, that pushed my fondness of this place. (651 words)
