Expansion & Commissioner for a day prompts merged into one.
If I was made commissioner for a day, I might as well use the drunken swell of power to make a broad sweeping change to a league I still know very little about (since I’ve been here for like 2 weeks). This change comes about in two forms, expansion and relegation.
The first step has to be expansion. Even in my short time in the league, I’ve heard numerous people comment about the large influx of new players who have signed up. In order to accommodate the larger player count, the league will need to expand. Expansion helps spread talent out across the league and allow more players to start and see time. Nobody creates an ISFL player with the goal of watching them ride the pine. Currently, there are 14 total ISFL teams. I would look to add 4 more teams to the ISFL and 2 more to the DSFL.
Here are the 4 new ISFL teams:
Seattle Sea Cattles:
There is no ISFL representation in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle is the most reasonable destination to fill that gap and they have a passionate football fanbase. Combine this fervor with a loveable play on words of a name and I think they’d find immense success.
Jalisco Músicos de Banda
We need more Mexican representation. The state of Jalisco has tremendous prospects for a team that can be located in the beautiful port city of Puerto Vallarta or the bustling city of Guadalajara. Taking inspiration from the Second Line, I think celebrating the rich and unique music and culture of Jalisco would inspire more hispanic players to join the league.
Toronto Goonsquad
I’ve long been inspired by the movie The Goon. I’d love to see a Canadian football club added to the mix and nothing seems sweeter than embracing that hard hitting hockey nature. This is probably a mascot I’d be most flexible in changing so I’d accept feedback. Toronto is a great spots town with amazing team mascots, stadiums and teams. (Raptors, Maple Leaves, Blue Jays etc.). It’s truly a beautiful city and when we have players flying from Berlin to Osaka for games, we should definitely prioritize expansion closer to the states.
The Antarctic Polar Bears
You ever wish we could have a team where every home game is a snow game? Me too. This team is set to be a spectacle unlike anything the league has ever seen. The harshest conditions would sculpt the fiercest of competitors. Add to all of this a great joke of a name and you have yourself a real winner (for those who maybe don’t know, there are no bears in Antarctica and some experts theorize that is how it got its name, as the greek origin of Arktos means “bear” and thus Antarktos could have meant “without bears”. DSFL expansion:
With more new players, we would need to add a couple more DSFL teams to accommodate as well. These teams would be:
Granada Matadors
The DSFL needs a foothold in Europe and I know what you are going to say though “what about London?”
Well the UK is no longer part of the EU and as such, that doesn’t count. Getting a foothold in the mainland of Europe will be an important step to improving the league.
Kansas Prairie Dogs
Lastly we bring another team to the heartland of America. The land is cheap and Kansas is a great place to send any players you worry about getting into trouble because there is frankly not much to do there and I say that as a compliment.
Relegation:
I’ve loved the concept of relegation in leagues. Gives teams that are in rebuilds something to play for and gives bad teams reasons to win games late in the year. In this new league structure with 18 teams, the first season, I would have the bottom 4 teams of the league be relegated at the end of the season. Relegated teams would still play a normal schedule the following year but they would be ineligible for the playoffs. Instead, the top 2 teams in the relegation league would play the bottom 2 teams from the premiere ISFL. The winners would play in the upper league the following year and the bottom two teams would be relegated.
Add on a bonus rider, if your team remains relegated for 4 consecutive seasons, the owner will be forced to sell the team and all team FO personnel will be fired.
This relegation system would make more games matter towards the end of the season and the “Relegation Bowls” would be a hallmark event at the end of the season. Think of it like lesser Bowl games in college. Much better than the Pro Bowl and gives teams reasons to not tank. Tanking is the worst and most boring element in sports that has just become accepted best practice.
