Juan had a lot of work to do in the offseason. It wasn’t that his rookie year was a total disaster, but he didn’t quite have the impact he would have wanted. He continues to steadily improve his strength and tackling, but a major focus this offseason was working on his competitiveness.
And so it was a regimen of chess boxing that Rascal submitted to this offseason. Tungsten chess pieces to add that little bit of strength training but primarily he wanted to find that killer instinct. A wise man once said “If you ain’t first, you’re last”. To that end the scoring system for Juan’s chess boxing matches was a little different. If he won he got to box normally. If he lost he had to “box” with two hands tied behind his back, basically just get pummeled for 10 minutes. If he drew he’d split the difference and have one hand tied behind his back.
Juan always liked winning and hated losing, but now he hated drawing just as much. If you aint first you’re last. Words to live by for Juan in the coming season and maybe for the up and coming Kaiju more generally this season.
