The Baltimore Hawks won it all this year. In the offseason looking at the team I noticed they really had it all, but that the window was closing, and one lynchpin in particular could cause them to fall short. Aging quarterback Wolfie McDummy Jr. was starting to lose his shine, and there might be the possibility to upgrade at the position and help ensure they make it to the promised land.
But Baltimore stayed pat. And they executed on a game plan with a more limited role for their aging passer, putting even more emphasis on their two headed ground attack. Shrubbery and Skywalker really delivered. Both finished in the top 10 for rushing yards this season, and by keeping their partner resh they both averaged an impressive 5 yards per carry. That sort of volume and efficiency allowed McDummy to fulfill more of a game manager role and he was up to the task.
Their defense demands attention as well, holding opponents to 20.1 points per game best in the league this season. They did it again with a great degree of balance. A great degree of balance across the different levels of the defense with great years put together by captain Carter Goad in the trenches, killer B’s Bazooka and Beanman in the linebacker corps and a top notch secondary featuring Dino Nuggets, Chappy McChaperson, and the up and coming Lawrence Crawford.
You could describe it as a fairy tale ending. But it is also a good example of a team having a plan and executing on it. I think there is reason to believe this might have been the teams last, best chance to finish on top, but doesn’t that make it all the sweeter when a team is able to gather its rosebuds while it still may. And also it gives me an opportunity to apologize for my earlier hot take, McDummy was good enough to get the job done and I think it is a fitting conclusion to a great career.
