1. The Season 50 Ultimus and Ultimini have officially come to an end. Congratulations to the the Bondi Beach Buccaneers and Baltimore Hawks for each winning their respective championships. How did each of the finalists in either the Ultimus or Ultimini arrive at the playoffs? Were there any teams that surprised or disappointed during the playoffs? Did the outcome of either championship game surprise you at all?
I already covered some of this in my Portland Pythons season wrap-up, however I thought it would be fun to do this off-season task but also go back and focus a bit more on Bondi Beach and the build up to the DSFL Season 50 Ultimini. Both of the divisions in the DSFL during Season 50 saw a bit of a split early on, which made for a rather limited playoff race down the stretch. Portland finished 10-4 in the RATS division, same as the division winning Grey Ducks who won the tie-breaker over Portland based on 2 regular-season wins over the Pythons. Bondi Beach Bucs would finish 8-6, still 2 games ahead of 3rd place and 3 games behind the Dallas Birddogs who finished 11-3 and were the Tijuana division favorites headed into the playoffs.
Both the Bondi Beach Buccaneers and the Portland Pythons would head into their conference title games on the road and heavily favored to lose. Dallas finished 11-3 as the top team in the entire DSFL, and they split the regular season series with Bondi Beach one game a piece. Dallas did get the better of Bondi Beach in Week 14, which sealed the best record for Dallas and cemented them as the DSFL title favorites.
Bondi Beach would win in Dallas, 16-14, in an absolute dog fight of a game. Kicker Jack Wolf would open the game with 3 field goals and a 9-0 lead for Bondi Beach all the way into the 3rd quarter where it remained 9-0. Dallas would battle back with a FordF150 goal line touchdown in the late 3rd quarter to make it 9-7 BB and close the lead to 2. Bondi would answer with a 61 yard touchdown pass to Rocket Toss to take the 16-7 lead. Dallas would score late to close the gap yet fell short to the underdog Bucs who'd clinch their Ultimini spot in a narrow 2 point victory. Jack Wolf would be player of the game going 3/3 on long field goals in a defensive struggle.
The NFC title game would also prove to be an exciting one, as Minnesota jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Cyrus MacDougall, Rookie QB for the Grey Ducks, found Rookie receiver Matt Turk for a 22-yard score. Portland would end up tying it in the second quarter off a 70-yard touchdown bullet off the arm of Rockmann to Larton Hilnka. Portland would add a Shiyun Lin rushing touchdown at the end of the half to go up 14-7 headed into halftime. Minnesota would open the 3rd quarter with a field goal to make the score 14-10 Portland advantage. Portland would answer with a field goal of their own to set the score at 17-10. Federico Cinco would bust loose for Minnesota to knot the game at 17-17 off an 11 yard scamper in the early 4th quarter. With 1:29 remaining in the game, Pasta Rockmann would connect with John Myers on another deep 45 yard touchdown pass to set Portland ahead 24-17. The Pythons would add another TD late on a Wilder rushing touchdown to seal the game 31-17. Portland would clinch the victory and a spot in the Season 50 DSFL Ultimini to defend their championship against the Bondi Beach Bucs.
At this point, I think it's safe to say that both teams were sort of surprised to have made it this far. I know Portland had won it last season, however, Minnesota beat the snot out of them twice in the regular season so it didn't seem like a sure thing they'd get through that NFC title game. Bondi Beach was also a pretty significant underdog to Dallas in the TFC title game, so at this point I was pretty much feeling like whoever was the underdog in the Ultimini would perhaps have an edge? It just seems like both Portland and Bondi Beach are such underdog-spoiler types, so naturally when Portland had 2 pretty strong wins over BBB in the regular season I knew we (Portland) was going to be in trouble.
I am already at 600 some words so at this point let me just quote my article for this blurb about the Ultimini final game between Bondi Beach & Portland:
It was a great game and a well fought win by the BB Bucs. Congratulations again to the Bondi Beach GMs and team on their win. It's too bad we fell just short but I was shocked to win it last season as a rookie and I hope the rookies on the BBB side enjoy that same rush. Great season everyone, looking forward to S51!

I am already at 600 some words so at this point let me just quote my article for this blurb about the Ultimini final game between Bondi Beach & Portland:
Quote:The Season 50 Ultimini would open in spectacular fashion and world class pageantry. The dots were absolutely beautiful on this night under the stars and in front of a standing room only crowd. The game would start off slow with both teams feeling each other out early. Bondi Beach would score 2 field goals in the first quarter to take an early 6-0 lead off the leg of Jack Wolf. Portland would break through early in the 2nd quarter when Pasta Rockmann connected with Scott Wickerd on another long 58 yard touchdown. Portland would get the extra point and take the lead, 7-6. Bondi Beach would answer with a vengeance, with Slick Jr scoring on a 2 yard touchdown pass from Confurius DeThwilson to go up 13-7. Bondi Beach would follow that up with another big score, this time a passing touch down to Golden Ericksen for 4 yards and the 20-7 lead. Rockmann and the Pythons would try to assemble another late game come back, connecting with Larton Hilnka for an 8 yard touchdown pass to make it 20-14 late in the 3rd quarter. DeThwilson's arm and the Bucs defense combined would simply prove to be too much for Portland to handle on this day. Bondi Beach would shutout Portland in the final frame while DeThwilson would connect with Travis Novak on an 11 yard touchdown with 6 minutes to go that would ultimately seal the fate of Portland. The final score would run 27-14 and the Bondi Beach Buccaneers would be your DSFL Season 50 Ultimini Champions!
