The San Jose SaberCats are flying higher than we ever have before. With a 7-0 start, unprecedented in club history, we have immediately seen a massive return on the Penningtons trade and are in a great position to win now. With how our offensive stars have gained valuable experience as well and have a lot of pressure off of them, they have flourished, especially our second-year running back, Jerrod Canton. Denied Offensive Rookie of the Year last year, he's now a leading contender for Running Back of the Year and, I would hope, in the conversation for Offensive Player of the Year and MVP.

Our defense has yet to concede more than 21 points, even including the game past the halfway mark, and key turnovers and stands late in games all around have been massive in preserving our perfect record, even down to clutch plays in the final minute with the opposing offense marching and threatening to snatch the game at the last. The ground pound on offense combined with a stubborn defense still works, even with dreams of QBs and WRs flying passes to a title.

I have personally witnessed four lottery seasons in my time here out of the SaberCats prior to this season. This is a massively refreshing change of pace. Seeing the project succeed so fast and with a setup to make San Jose a power for at least a few more seasons to come makes me feel excellent about this run and future seasons.

Nate Swift got off to a slow start this season, not being signed until right before week 1. However, once he joined the Tijuana Luchadores, he was quickly integrated into the offense, quickly becoming quarterback Andreas Metaxes’s number 2 target in the passing game. Through 8 games, he has amassed 292 yards on 27 receptions and has scored one TD. The Luchadores have started strong with a 6-2 record and lead their division. Their only losses coming on close games in weeks 6 and 7 to the Pythons and the Coyotes respectively. Swift is feeling quite strong about his first half performance. When he first joined the team, he had a hard time figuring out how to improve his skill set, but as he has gotten to know more about the ins and outs of the league, and received help from his teammates, he is beginning to grow as a player and now he gets better every week!

Swift is looking forward to the second half of the season, hoping to help his team achieve the much sought after DSFL championship. He hopes the offense grows around him and that he will be able to make this offense a true dual threat offence.

With 6 DSFL weeks in the books, Johnny Snuggles was feeling a bit down conflicted. The Coyotes were a more than respectable 4-2 and playing pretty well. They were tied with conference rival the Portland Pythons for first, a team they had recently swapped away victories with. Most recently, the Pythons had absolutely destroyed the Coyotes at home, 47- 17. However, both teams were chasing the Tijuana Luchadores for the highly coveted home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. On a more personal front though, Johnny was feeling a bit down. Through 6 games he had 6 passes defended. While a respectable number, Johnny knew he could do better. The truly upsetting thing to him was his lack of interceptions. Johnny Snuggle, the former #1 overall pick, had yet to intercept a pass in the DSFL, and it was eating him alive. Luckily, Johnny have a coming out party of sorts over the next 2 weeks. He was able to intercept his first career pass on just the third play of their showdown with the Luchadores. Even better, the Coyotes were able to top the perennial power to take home the win. The next week was truly special though. In the third quarter of their away game with the Solar Bears, Johnny was able to come down with his second career pick to start the second half. Even more exciting, he was able to return the pass 23 yards for his first career pick 6, and to give the Coyotes the 14-7 lead. The Coyotes were able edge them out for the win to take sole possession of the NFC lead.

I definitely think I have let my team down so far this season. Not only am I not forcing the turnovers they expect from me but I have relinquished my role as returner. It is disheartening, for sure, but understandable. I was not getting the job done at the end of the day. I am third on the team in tackling but I feel like my pass defense could use some work. Only two pass deflections is not going to get it done through seven or eight games. To be fair, we are 3-5 so I'm not sure anyone is expecting pro bowl numbers out of me but I still feel like I owe this team more than I have put out thus far. I had a lot of personal life stuff going on which caused me to take some time away so I am hoping now that that has all been cleared up I can focus on the sport I love, the sport that got me through so much earlier on in my life. I need to get back to work and help this team win some more games. 3-5 is not getting us into the post season, we need to go on a winning streak.

At the halfway point of the season, the Philadelphia Liberty defensive back sits among the league leaders in any reasonable measure of pass defense. Be that pass deflections or interceptions -- the league does not track targets or yards allowed, though it is hard to believe the eldest Garnett sibling would not rank highly there too -- Lennox ranks highly.

On his team's less than stellar record this season so far, Lennox is positively cavalier. "A nuh nutten'", he shrugs. "A plenty game deh fi win still iyah. An' we still fi inna playoff position, so mi a concern fi what? Mi nuh fear nuh duppy [the Wraiths] ar bigfoot [the Yeti], an' mi still fi waan bruk up di bumboclaat hawks dem." His tone changes noticeably at this point. "Mi did chat to Antoine bout dem inna Baltimore, an' mi did tell 'im seh if I man a get chance fi stop dem, mi aguh stop dem. An' now mi fi feel seh it personal cah we did get inna one izzim-skizzim becah mi nuh like dem and mi did tel 'im seh mi a Jamaican an' mi nuh nice, seen?"

S12 has been a difficult season for DT Andrew Reese. As almost everyone is already aware, Reese was suspended for the first 4 games of the season after admitting to using PEDs during the offseason. However, his performance in the 3 games since returning to the field has been practically non-existent. In fact, going by the box scores for weeks 5 through 7, you’d almost wonder if Reese had returned to the field at all as he didn’t pick up a single tackle or sack. Perhaps it’s just Reese working off the rust from his suspension or maybe it’s karma, but his performance so far literally couldn’t be worse. If anything, this abysmal performance on the field has left many to wonder if Reese’s stats last year were the result of PEDs despite his claims to never using them prior to the recent off-season. At this point, it’s up to Reese to prove that he can stand on his own two feet and, so far, he’s doing a very poor job of it. As the #3 pick in the S11 Draft, a lot of analysts praised the Outlaws for grabbing Reese, but if this season is any indication, the move has largely been a bust. Time will only tell if Reese can bounce back from this or if his S11 performance was just “inflated” all along.
