A big NSFL trade just took place that could have league altering consequences. The Colorado Yeti have shipped arguably this season's top punter to the New Orleans Second Line. Peg Leg will now be donning the Purple and Teal in New Orleans. In exchange, the Yeti receive a future draft pick that may or may not hold any substantial value.
Peg Leg was drafted in the third round of the S5 draft by the Las Vegas Legion. In the middle of S5 he was dealt to the Yeti as a piece of a bigger trade. Since that trade, the Legion have relocated to New Orleans and re-branded as the Second Line. However, Leg is now reunited with the management team that drafted him and subsequently traded him away.
Peg Leg put up respectable numbers in S5 leading the league in Punts Inside the 20. He has continued this dominance into S6, where he currently leads the league in Punts Inside the 20. While some may contribute this stat to the sheer volume of punts the Yeti have asked him to do, others say it shows his excellent ability to angle punts out of bounds.
The Second Line have likely found their replacement for the disappointing Joseph Lombardi with this deal. Lombardi has only managed to pin opposing teams inside the 20 twice in his 33 punts, while Leg has pinned them back there 8 times in 34 punts. The Second Line surely hope that Leg is able to continue this to give them the field position advantage moving forward.
The Yeti meanwhile end up adding a pick which may or may not convey depending on the depth of the S8 draft class. Some are speculating that it may a deep draft class as current players begin to look toward retirement and recreation. If that is the case, the Yeti may walk away the long term winners of this trade. In the short term they will be likely rely on Micycle McCormick to pull double duty as kicker and punter. McCormick currently sits tied with the lowest field goal percentage in the league, the Yeti have to hope he is more accurate on punts as he tries to fill the large hole left by Peg's departure.
I give this trade an B+ for the New Orleans Second Line. They addressed a position of weakness without giving up much, if anything at all. On the other side, I give this trade a C+ for the Yeti. They were able to turn an extraneous piece of their roster into a potential solid contributor in the future. The Yeti's grade on this trade certainly could grow beyond the C+ if they are able to make that selection in Season 8's draft.
Edit: In late breaking news, immediately after this trade was announced, New Orleans Second Line Kicker/Punter Joseph Lombardi announced he would be retiring at the end of Season 6.
