The Yellowknife Wraiths plan to bring supernatural firepower to the football field and set it ablaze before our very eyes.
With the Inaugural 2017 NSFL Draft officially in the past, we've now entered the OTAs/Training Camp phase. With all of the talk around the Wraiths' organization, there's plenty of stories that need to be accounted for.
One of those stories that can be an afterthought is the undeniable talent that appears to be contagious throughout the locker room. The type of talent that, with the proper amount of chemistry and being able to stay on the right page at all times, can be a part of a future dynasty early in these young player's careers.
The confidence is building with each rep, drill, tape review, etc. Everyday is used to keep the team trending in the right direction.
Let's dive into what's cooking in Canada and talk about the main storylines heading into Season #1.
Who Has The Golden Arm?
One of the questions that need to be answered is deciding which QB will be leading the offense come Week 1.
Reports within the Wraith's Organization is that the decision will be made after the final preseason game. The two QBs that will battle it out for the starting spot are Navy QB Chris Orosz and Northwestern QB Alexandre LeClair.
As of today, the race appears to be neck and neck as the off season begins to wind down. Both QBs have displayed the leadership skills and the pure throwing ability to lead the pack towards success, all of this while making great strides in their overall development.
"Obviously a QB battle was always going to happen considering the importance of the position. I believe I've got what it takes and the drive to win the spot and hope that the coaches see that during training camp & the pre-season games."
- Alexandre LeClair
It'll be interesting to see who gets the nod to start the season. By how it's looking right now, it can swing either way. Both of which are putting their hearts on the line to get the to the top QB spot. Exactly what is needed to lead the Wraiths to the promised land.
Me personally, both appear to be deserving of the spot and it's going to be interesting to see which throws will tip the scale in each other's favor.
Chris Arosz made a spectacular throw early into the second day of OTAs, throwing a beautiful spiral BARELY over the outreached hands of LB Sinjin Flimjollywop and right into the hands of projected starting TE Ricky Maddox. To put it in perspective, his ball placement and being able to shift the defense with his eyes were some of the remarkable qualities that helped his case of being drafted by the Wraiths.
On the other side, Alexandre Leclair displayed his rocket arm, hitting Wizard Stephen in stride with CB Henri Rivere not too far off trailing him. It falls right into the breadbasket and it lead to a 59 yard TD pass. He also shows plenty of patience and his ability to work through his progressions has been a clear eye opener is to why he's one of the top two QBs on the roster.
Without a doubt, the race is as intense as it's ever been. With everything that's been present, there's no wrong decision until we see how the QBs and the rest of the team matches up come Preseason time. This is a sight that will be watched closely by everyone at the facility.
Which QB will prevail?
Find out on the next episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
Protection, Protection, Protection! The Shuffle Begins!
In order for the QB battle to hold weight, they will need time in the pocket to keep them upright. The Wraiths invested early and made a statement that championships are won in the trenches.
YeW managed to snag three Offensive Linemen, LSU Tiger OL Mat Akselsen, the Hawaii Rainbow Warrior OL Jogn Floggity, & THE Ohio State Buckeye OL D'Brickishaw Ferguson. All touting the mentality that they were the founders of IHOP.
That being said, there are two main questions that need to be answered: Who will start where and will there be additions to boost the overall performance/chemistry?
We've managed to get a word from Jogn Floggity after the last day of OTAs and he's made it know that "I'm the Center. Believe that." We will have to see what Akselsen and Ferguson have to say about that in the remaining days before the season begins.
Word around the rumor mill is that there may be as many as three members with a position switch in the upcoming weeks of the Preseason to help supplement the vacancies among both the Offensive and Defensive lines.
As of now, there are no names confirmed to join the forces of the O-Line. One of the names to be playing in a different role is former QB prospect Trent Bender. Latest reports have him moving to the other side of the football to bolster the Defensive Line. With the latest addition, the defensive front will feature Penn State Nittany Lion Mark Ramrio, Florida Gator Trent Bender, Yale Bulldog Tyler Varga and the Alabama Crimson Tide Alum Jason Spearhead.
There's no need to explain how dominant and confident this defensive front has been so far in the eyes of the coaches. This appears to be one of the stronger units in the NSFL on paper. Especially with the shortage of O-Linemen throughout the league.
Needless to say, these young men are ready, willing and able to beast and feast on the competition.
Who Wins The Landscaping Battle? The Garden or the Cutter?
The biggest head to head battle is a clear matchup between two of the best at their position going at it.
Baylor WR Josh Garden and Florida State CB Dirk Cutter have been the talk of the OTAs and Training Camp, living up to all of the hype after they were drafted and beating all expectations for the rivalry to see which is the better of the two.
Garden and Cutter went at each other immensely through OTAs and Training Camp. It's a clear indication that they developed a "best friend/rival" type of relationship, always trying to out do each other in everything. EVERYTHING.
This includes matchups in Madden 17, where the current record is tied at five apiece, constant forty yard dash races to see who's the fastest of the two, even ranging to the subject of food, seeing who can eat the most chicken wings out of 100.
Both of these teammates have been getting stellar reviews from the coaching staff and it's a storyline that may need to be more calm as the season gets closer as they begin to prepare for the opposition.
Some of the highlights seem to go back and forth with neither getting the clear upper hand. It's definitely too close to call at this point.
It's a pass deflection from Cutter one play and a contested TD catch from Garden the next. Immediated after that, the next throw gets caught near Odell Beckham style from the Baylor Alum and the throw after that, its the Seminole ripping the ball from Garden to take the INT in the process.
Rest assured, there was more than one reason why both of these players belong on an NSFL roster. Now that they are on the same team, they have to continue to make each other the best they can be for this next year and they both have to rely on bringing out the best out of each other.
It's nothing short of the "motivated young bucks jocking for position" scene and as long as they can match the production and intensity shown at these camps and be able to translate these qualities onto the football field, this is going to be something that can build the team together up as a whole.
The Preseason is literally right around the corner and how everything is looking around this roster, this team is ready for primetime. It's going to be interesting to see how the roster spots play out for some of these positions but there's a clear mindset everyone shares here.
Win by any means necessary.
"Either get out of the way or get run the f*ck over."
