The S11 Campaign for the Kansas City Coyotes officially begun this week as they saw their first pre-season match-ups take place. With a huge host of new talent and a very promising looking veteran group, this team is well on it's way towards being a contender this season. The Coyotes are lead by rookie quarterback Luke Boechler out of Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon who has been a cornerstone towards their success thus far in the year. Boechler sat down for a short interview with us about how the pre-season is going for him so far, and here's what he had to say to our questions.
Your first DSFL game ever thrown was a pretty mediocre performance against the Palm Beach Solar Bears. What do you think people's expectations are based upon that game?
Well, you know their expectations might be low as fuck, but I can promise that they shouldn't be. I didn't play my best but I also didn't play my worst, and not throwing a touchdown in my first game is just those jittieries or whatever the fuck that everyone always talks about. It's not something you can get mad at me for, I just wasn't as godlike as usual.
Sorry, a correction, but you didn't throw a touchdown pass the whole pre-season did you?
Well technically no, but I got us close a lot of times, and that's what counts. I helped us drive towards the end zone and I had a great completion percentage and had a high yard count. I'm sure Yulic [Nagasawa] and Krispy [Kreme] are quite happy with the balls they've been getting thrown at them, and I doubt they're going to make a big deal about not getting any touchdowns yet.
Well actually, Kreme has publicly announced that he's quite upset with your lackluster ability to play. That's coming from one of your past team mates, what do you think about that?
Krispy was always a fucking prick, so honestly that doesn't even surprise me. I don't need certain guys around me to perform well, I just need me myself and I. He can go stick his dick in an exhaust pipe for all I care.
Following this, we aired a segment on Coyotes Radio surrounding the first four games of the season, here is our quick recaps.
Pre-Season Week One - Palm Beach Solar Bears
The season opened up with a game against the Palm Beach Solar Bears, a team that has failed to make the playoffs for a number of seasons. There are a couple of key players on the team, but the Coyotes were able to handily dispatch them by a score of 17-14. Quarterback Luke Boechler went 18/32 on passes for a total of 141 yards at 7.8 yards per completion which was a strong number for a rookie quarterback. The running game is where the Coyotes really succeeded though, as David Bell ran in two touchdowns and amassed 154 yards on 30 attempts. The team's defense was essential to their win, with Lennox Garnett having a player of the game worthy performance with five tackles and two sacks from the backfield.
Pre-Season Week Two - San Antonio Marshals
This second game for the Coyotes ended once again with a score of 17-14 as Kansas City opened up their season by going 2-0. Boechler once again failed to complete a touchdown pass, but both David Bell and rookie running back Dick Wizardry ran in a touchdown, making the team's offense still quite dynamic. Yulic Nagasawa caught four balls for eighty one yards and at an amazing 20.2 YPC, leading any performance this season. On defense Jake Verden had a performance of the year for him, and a personal best by posting seven tackles, four pass deflections and two interceptions in what was a major part of the defense that picked apart opposing quarterback Zenyou Wozy.
Pre-Season Week Three - Tijuana Luchadores
While the first two games were wins for the Coyotes, their third game in the league was very much not the same. The team took a huge and devastating loss with a score of 23-0 at the hands of the dynastic Tijuana Luchadores of the SFC. Opposing kicker/punter Kulture Future ran over the team for three field goals in the first half alone, while Ricky Flores had a field day with two touchdowns against the Coyotes. Boechler threw a career high three interceptions and posted an astronomically low QB Rating OF 28. This was a game to forget for Kansas City, but it was evident that it lit a fire beneath them that would allow them to rebound the next week and come back with a vengeance. As a highlight, veteran send down Lennox Garnett had eight tackles, a pass deflected, and interception for a very strong defensive performance.
Pre-Season Week Four - San Antonio Marshals
These two teams met for the second time of the pre-season circuit in what was a surprise double header, but this time the Coyotes wouldn't get the result they were looking for and would fall at the hands of the more developed and slightly stronger Marshals. The final score was 23-20 for San Antonio, as Bell posted two touchdowns for the Coyotes alongside Wizardry's one for eighteen combined points between the two. Boechler posted a stat line that was quite respectable, going 13/21 on completions, and throwing 138 yards for a QB rating of 61.2. On defense the Coyotes top player was send down T. Pierce who had ten tackles and two pass deflections for his team and a great overall performance.
Thank you for tuning into this week on Coyotes Radio. We're going to be here every week to give you constant updates on the ups and downs of the Kansas City Coyotes as they take a journey of recovery and move towards finalizing their dream of winning the Ultimini championship for the first time in the franchises's long history.
