(S14) PT 3 - Expansion

Fuck New York, Fuck Los Angeles, and Fuck Seattle too for good measure. There is one city that has been pushed aside far too long in pop culture and sim leagues. Recently it's seen a slight resurgence, but to be perfectly honest the branding is trash. I propose an alternative:

The Chicago Butchers

The City of Chicago once again sees sim league football after having the Chicago Blues rudely ripped away and the Chicago Coyotes swiftly re-re-located. This time, once again it will be a name that relates much better to the city than some dumbass Mob reference or lazy allusion to the city's nickname which doesn't even have any bearing on the reality of the city (although weather does get weird round here, but inner-city doesn't get it as much as the outskirts cause the lake).
Anyway, the name "Butchers" comes from Chicago's history as being the stockyard capital of America. In fact, there's even a neighborhood in the city named "The Back of The Yards", based on how most of the people who lived there back in the day were the poor class working at the stockyards. Now it's just poor.
Anyway, the branding around it would probably have to involve a lot of red, with a metallic silver as a secondary. The logo would be two cleavers crossed and a skull over it. Human skull or cow skull, artist's choice. I'd like to have some sort of allusion to the sky blue color of the Chicago flag, but if that can't fit in, whatever I guess.

My idea for an expansion team is The Mambasa Mambas! Since this is a simulation league, it is much easier to be creative with teams, locations, ideas, etc. That is why I think we should use this expansion opportunity to expand to much further places across the globe. I chose the name Mambasa Mambas for several reasons. First, when I started thinking of team names, I decided that I wanted to create a team that had a species of snake as its mascot and in its name. The reason I did this was due to the fact that there is a "snake" team in the Prospect Bowl and the DSFL, the East Cobras and the Portland Pythons, so I personally think it would be a very neat idea to continue that into the NSFL as well. I know that me and several of my Python teammates have played for both of those teams, so having the opportunity to possibly continue that tradition of playing for "snake" teams would be an interesting aspect and addition to the league. Also, I chose the Black Mamba as the snake to represent the team for a specific reason. Although you don't hear about the Black Mamba very often, it is actually one of the deadliest snakes in the world. This is not due to just its venom. It is actually the fastest and second longest snake in the world. They are also known for striking repeatedly, instead of just biting once. They can actually move faster than most people can run, which is one of the main reasons why they are considered to be so dangerous. These would be ideal characteristics the Mambas would look at when drafting players for their team, speed and the ability to strike efficiently and repeatedly. The Mambas would be a team with a strong offensive-mindset. This is not to say that their defense is weak by any means. Black Mambas are also known for being very territorial, and they will do what they must to protect their turf. Also, if you were wondering about the team colors, black mambas are actually rarely black, despite their name. They are usually brown or greyish in color, varying in different ways.

Taking a look around the league and where NSFL teams are located, you notice a trend...that they’re not all the typical cities you would expect to see, and that there are certain areas of North America used...we have Canada in Yellowknife, the Northeast is covered by Baltimore and Philadelphia, in the South you have New Orleans, the Southwest is filled by Arizona, the Westcoast is occupied by Orange County and San Jose, And while not really the Midwest anymore, the middle of the country is occupied by Colorado. So when you plot that all out on a map, you notice one big gap from the States is missing: The Midwest and the northern part of the southeast...with that I feel there are two cities that would be ideal candidates for the expansion:

Indianapolis and Nashville.

For those that don’t know, Indianapolis has 6 major interstate highways/freeways that go through, or around the city. It has been dubbed “Crossroads of America”. So with this in mind the Indianapolis Highwaymen are born! The colors will be traditional highway markings of a primary black with gold, white, and grey trim.

For Nashville, a few things pop up right away...music of course, distilleries, and chicken. The city is one that never sleeps and wherever you are you always hear it...noise. The Nashville Noise is born. Colors will be stolen from the Titans with dark blue, baby blue, with red and white trim.

I have created plenty of expansion teams and teams starting out a league in my sim life. The most common theme between my teams is that I primarily created them in the state of Washington. I have used places such as Seattle, Mercer Island, and Riverside but the one major city in Washington I have never used is the city of Tacoma. If I were to bring an expansion team to the NSFL I would crate the Tacoma Totem which would pay homage to the strong native american culture in the Seattle-Tacoma area. We would wear a sea foam green and golden yellow with black highlights and our primary mascot would be the noble bear. Tacoma would be a fantastic hub for sports enthusiasts as there are numerous main highways and side roads that could access the stadium which would natural be called The Tipi. The Seattle-Tacoma are has established a strong and undying passion for it's local sports teams and they would play next to Cheney Stadium which houses the Tacoma Rainiers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. I would create Tacoma's version of T-Mobile Park and Century Link but on a slightly smaller and more intimate scale. It would be fun to bring a winning culture to the city of Tacoma.

My proposed expansion team would be the Memphis Pharaohs who's logo would be a depiction of an Pharaoh's death mask. I chose Memphis because of its connection to the Egyptian city because I thought the Pharaoh branding would be good. Memphis would also be a realistic option for a football team population wise having over 650,000 people, only slightly lower than Nashville which is home to the Titans. Its location would also be good from a geographical standpoint. Its relatively central location wouldn't add any grueling travel times and its International airport is well equipped to handle flights in and out in a timely manner. Memphis has tried many times for its own football team. It had Titans for a year after moving from Houston, a WFL team (Southmen), a USFL team (Showboats), a CFL team (Mad Dogs), and an XFL team (Maniax). The desire for a Football team is there and adding a NSFL team there would draw a good amount of support. They would play in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium which has a seating capacity of 58,318 but has room for additional seating if needed (it's capacity used to be almost 63,000). The team colors would be black and gold for the black silt deposited by the Nile floods and the gold used by royalty.

Ok, so there are plenty of cool places and mascots and whatever else. I haven't read through the different proposals so I don't know for sure but I'd bet that many of the cool ones are mentioned: DC, Salt Lake City, maybe some mid-west teams or even a great lakes team--I'm always a fan of Michigan based things. But for this I thought it would be cool to go with something unique that I haven't really seen before: and Alaskan team. Yes, I know, there is probably a few very good reason there aren't professional teams based in Alaska, probably not the least of which is the outrageous travel time it would require for teams. But since this is a sim league that doesn't matter! So, with out further word-consuming ado, I'd like to present the Anchorage Eskimos. Ok, literally as I was typing that I realized there is a PBE team based in Anchorage. With cool branding too. Alrighty so I decide "ok you know what I know my PT sucks, maybe I'll find a picture to add or something like that, maybe that will make up for it". And what do you know, Eskimos is apparently an offensive word to the "Inuit people" of Alaska. So now I think we have to like fall back to Moose or something. No, the Kodiak. That actually sounds cool. So here's a logo:



I actually think the league could use a little more deep blue color, even though this logo is definitely something I just ripped from the internet, I don't hate the branding altogether. Anyways, HO I am counting on you to not allow something this bad. Or as bad as 90% of these suggestions in this PT. That's pretty much all I have.

The Midwest really gets shafted when it comes to the football teams, doesn't it? The Rams left, the Jayhawks blow in perpetuity, and the NSFL doesn't have a presence there besides maybe the Yeti, but that's more West than Midwest. Well, let's change that. Ladies and gentlemen, the Wichita Bombers.



Wichita is the largest city in the state of Kansas, with a metro population of roughly 2/3 of a million people, and a team there would most likely be the nearest team to nearly the entire Midwest. Wichita is nicknamed the Air Capital of the World, and is home to the McConnell Air Force Base, hence the name Bombers. The team's colors would start with a military green and be accented by a dark brown and a medium yellow. It could temporarily play in Cessna Stadium, where Wichita State hosted a football team until it was discontinued in 1986, but I'd build a new indoor stadium called simply The Hangar. It could set up some kind of alliance with the Kansas City Coyotes, and a neighboring state rivalry with the Colorado Yeti practically writes itself. It would nicely fill in a chunk of the country dying to see some football and it wouldn't have much in local sports competitors, so the Bombers would attract all the sports fans in the area.

Quick note, juuuuuuuust in case it's required. It is well known that I am an applicant for an expansion team. This is NOT my actual team plan.

It's time for the NSFL to embrace it's root sand it's inner truth. We are severely under represented in the north and central area of the continent and we are extremely low on cool teams. And by cool I mean...COOL. We need to seriously up our representation of popular and beautiful and there's only one place it can possibly happen.

Saskatoon is a great city wherein thousands upon thousands of children are educated in the same exact building together and who all play lacrosse, as you do when you're amazing and cool. Certainly it will help expand the NSFL to include more of football's most important fanbase. Canadians. And perhaps everyone will finally learn or at least glimpse a bit of what it's like to be us.

The Saskatoon Famouses are extremely popular and cool. The stadium will be filled with all the best people and will be such a great advantage that each game will begin with the Famouses leading 83-0 and it will always seem like the team has 17 players on the field rather than just 11. Saskatoon will field the best team every summer and even deep in the frost. The NSFL will never be the same ever again.

THE SOUTH DAKOTA HUMANS




When you think of football what do you think of? Helmets? Tackles? Well who's doing the tackling and who's wearing those helmets? Humans duh. Are you a human? Why yes. Yes you are. And you're a glorious son of a bitch that conquered your whole planet. Who invented football? Humans. Our uniforms? It'll be a clear-like plastic material. Why? BECAUSE WE DON'T SEE COLOR. WHY? Because we're all humans. The font? Well obviously we'll choose the most powerful font of them all. Close your eyes. Visualize this. The word 'Humans' with a period behind it.... Gloriously showcased in Comic Sans.

Boom.


Humans.


Oh and why South Dakota? Because no one knows what goes on in South Dakota and is impartial to the state as a whole. This is an opportunity we can't pass up.... Every member of the animal kingdom has had their chance to shine and I for one am sick of humans being discriminated against or marginalized as mascots. Bandits? Cowboys? Indians? Don't get me started!

I'm seeing a lot of suggestions for the expansion team in the U.S. While those are okay, I guess, I have a suggestion that will take a little more work, but bear with me.

I give to you, the Transylvania Impalers.

Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Transylvania, Romania, the stadium would be built with the Dracula Castle in the background. We might have some trouble with building permits, and upset locals, but they could be easily swayed with some NSFL coin.

The stadium would be named Dracula Arena. The stadium would be designed to blend in to the country as well as possible, almost an expansion of the Dracula Castle itself. This could be accomplished with a lot of stone, dark colors, and a low profile stadium with an open roof. Maybe throw in a few gargoyles for good measure.

The color scheme would be black and blood red. The logo would be a halberd with thorny vines enveloping it.

The gift shop would sell foam halberds, wooden stakes, and helmets fashioned after Vlad the Impaler's own style.

All drinks served would have several drops of Red Dye 40 added. When spilled, as is common at these games, it would give a real bloody vibe to the spectators.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Flying to these games would be a bear. However, I think the appeal of this team/location would easily outweigh the inconvenience.
