(This post was last modified: 07-25-2019, 06:25 PM by Bigred1580.)
Welcome back to the second edition of the Season 16 fantasy football deep dive! In my first Volume I discussed the Average Draft Position (ADP) of everyone who was drafted in any one of the 14 Fantasy Groups. I discussed interesting notes about trends and where everyone fell, particularly the top players. Lastly, I took a sneak peek at each league to find who drafted best (according to ADP), who drafted worst, what players were steals, and who is the best player available on each waiver wire. For this piece, I will discuss the first half of the season (weeks 1-8) and what players are under performing or over performing their ADP. I will once again look at each league and find common denominators in who is doing the best and worse. I will take a look at any waiver wire moves, and how that changes the landscape.
You can find my updated charting here, where I analyze each player by position ranking.
First off, for this piece, I am specifically looking at data from weeks 1-8. So for example, Yellowknife’s week 9 defensive performance has pushed them from 7th best defense all the way to number 2, and T Swift scored 4 TDs, but we will ignore that for now. The first thing I want to look at in the first half of the season in how running backs have performed. You may remember that the top 5 picks in the draft were RBs and that not a single league did not have at least 3 of the top 4 players taken in the top 4 picks. First think we will notice is that the top 3 have lived up to their billing will all being top 4 options. It gets tricky at 4 and 5 as both Shady and T Swift have been massive busts, ranking 12 and 9 out of 14 respectfully. That will not cut it for your first round pick. The honor for the other 2 in the top 5 goes to Torenson and Marshall, who have both been having stellar break out years. It is also noteworthy that once you get passed Gump at 6, RBs 7-12 are separated by less than 10 points. Biggest winners at the position has to be Torenson, followed by Marshall who were both double digit selections at the position, and biggest bust has to go to Shady, who has let everyone down with his top 4 ADP.
Next, I’m looking at Wide Receivers. The studs at the position are Valentine and von Matt, who have separated themselves from the pack. Valentine isn’t a surprise as he was 1st overall pick, but von Matt has been a revelation for those that snagged him as the 6th best WR. For the most part the rest of the ranking are relatively close to expected with the exceptions of Nacho Varga jumping into the 6 slot and “Touchdown” Tommy Helanan being 7th best even though being 15th going in. Notable busts included reigning WRotY Bishop, who has been unable to capture the last season’s magic with new QB McDummy slinging the ball. To a lesser extent, Oles was the third off the board and has only managed to rank as the 8th WR. The biggest drop off at the position is better 2 and 3 where 30 points separate von Matt and Sunnycursed.
Now to TEs. There is no position with a larger gap between the top 2 and the rest. Blaze leads Olsen by just under 2 points, but Olsen leads the third place player in Brannigan by Double his Score! What a massive drop off! From there is isn’t worth over analyzing the rest as all the remaining players are sub 60 points and one TD here or there could swing the position. Though we have to mention the biggest disappointment in L’Alto, who was taken neck and neck with Blaze, but has a third of his points and ranks at 6OA.
Last we look at QBs (That’s right, kicker and defense don’t matter) and we see some interesting results. If you take out Cooter and Havran, the ADP matches the current results. Cooter has jumped from 6 to 3 and Havran has fallen from 5 to last place. The only 2 really noteworthy facts are with the first and last place players. After Christ’s absolutely bonkers week 8 game, he is outpacing second place Showbiz by almost 50 points. And Havran’s fall behind both Francisco and Jenkins is frankly shocking, with all the weapons he has.
Now we go back and look at each league and take a sneak peak at why whoever is winning is winning, and whoever is losing is the Taco. The Leader is current best team and best draft and worst draft are based off my previous media piece. The asterisk is for leagues with only 5 teams.
*Group 1
Leader - Alex F - 936.06
Best Draft - AlexF
Last Place - DavidCorperial - 717.84
Worst Draft - DavidCorperial
Alex has been able to snab the best player at multiple positions in order to gain that top spot. With the #1 QB, #1 RB, #1 TE, #2 WR, and #2 K, he was able to dominate the competition. David’s downfall was grabbing busts T Swift, Bishop, and Adams, and getting no standout players.
The only waiver move was a smart one, as Rradum dropped RB 10 for RB 7.
Best players on the wire still, Marshall, and Reed at RB and Cooter at QB, Arizona defense.
Group 2
Leader - manicmav36 - 881.16
Best Draft - manicmav36
Last Place - TickleTim - 670.76
Worst Draft - TickleTim
Manic was able to make up for his busted picks of Shady and L’Alto, by getting the top two WRs, and snagging Torenson late. He has to keep it up, because JBLAZE is right on his heels. Tickle has been struggling to make up for his ill advised pickups of N. Swift, F. Boija, and Peter Larson.
Another good waiver move by Valor, who upgraded mightily from Harp to Olsen at TE. That decision is helping him get back in this.
Best players available still are Terry Taffy, the 8th best RB, Tommy Helanan at WR, and Arizona D.
*Group 3
Leader - SwagSloth - 873.56
Best Draft - Frick_Nasty (now 3rd)
Last Place - infinitempg - 708.4
Worst Draft - infinitempg
This league is a close race, as the top 3 teams are all within 50 of each other. Swag had a great draft nabbing RB2, QB1, and WR3, and K1 and overall he doesn’t have any holes. But Christ is keeping him in the game. The team to watch out for though is FN. He was my pick for best draft in all the leagues as he nabbed steal after steal. Unfortunately, things haven’t been working out for him. But his waiver moves have kept him in it. Infinite is still the bottom of this tier do to under performing players like Reese, Landers, and that bum Nate Swift.
There have been 3 waiver moves so far in this league. Infinite saw the error and dropped Crindy for Palmer in what can only be seen as a lateral move, especially with Olsen available. Frick has done the opposite and not been afraid to pull the trigger on two of his top picks. He dropped his flex Shady, who was the steal of the draft at the time of the draft, for Torenson, who is the best pickup a guy could ask for. He also dropped fan favorite L’Alto for up and comer Olsen. These moves are why I feel he is making a move on Swag in first place.
Best player still available is Cooter at QB, Marshall at RB, and Harris at K.
*Group 4
Leader - Leas4ever - 860.26
Best Draft - royalc90 (now 2nd)
Last Place - JVMjrDOT - 756.84
Worst - PigSnout (Now 3rd)
I did put that PigSnout had the best, worst draft as every team found value and Snout took all players at value, so It is no surprise that every team is within 100 of each other. Leafs team is built on Christ, Torenson, Wizardry and Blaze being tops at their position, but Royal is right on his heals with Bigsby, Brown, Flash, and Maddox leading the way.
The only move has been done by Leafs, who dropped the struggling T Swift for Torenson before week 4.
Once again with the broken record, but Marshall is the best player available followed by Harris and Arizona D.
*Group 5
Leader - flyeaglesfly29 - 849.04
Best Draft - flyeaglesfly29
Last Place - Daybe - 585.28
Worst Draft - Duilio05 (Now 4th)
Fly took a chance on his GM partner, Olsen, to great success. Pairing him with Maddox and Flash has helped him have a strong year. Majesiu having von Matt, and Wizardry has helped him to stay on fly’s heals. Daybe had the unfortunate scenario of drafting after everyone else was done which left him scrambling. However he has done a fair job grabbing the best available by getting Cooter, Torenson, Marshall, and Harris. But his weaknesses at TE and both WRs has left him fighting from behind. It doesn’t help that he missed week 1 stats.
Duilio has made the best moves by dropping that bum Nate Swift as well as L’Alto and upgrading to Nacho Varga, and the undrafted Blaze. Fly switching from Reed to Murphy has been a wash
The best player available now would have to be Taffy and Reed at RB, and a pair of Wraiths in Tommy H and Parker at WR.
Group 6
Leader - TeyonSchavari - 957.06
Best Draft - TeyonSchavari
Last Place - Fordhammer
Worst - Raven (now 4th)
Teyon had one of the best drafts of anyone and currently has the best team in the league. He has Christ, Brown, Flash, Blaze and Torenson. So, QB1, RB1, RB2, WR5, TE1. Add on to that, K2, and D2 and you have the makings of an Overall championship team. All in all, Ford doesn’t have a bad team, he is just in a great group. T-Swift, Bishop, Crindy, and Chicago D have all let him down.
Contacts has made a push into second place in part because of dropping YWK D for Arizona. However dropping Marshall for Murphy hasn’t helped.
Best player available once again includes Marshall and Tommy Helanan.
Group 7
Leader - speculadora - 856.76
Best Draft - shadyshoelace (now 4th)
Last Place - iamslm22 - 686.3
Worst - iamslm22
Spec getting the League’s top QB and RB has helped him retain a lead in this deep league. But TC is right on his heels with Showbiz, Helanan, Olsen and Canton. Slm taking his clients first doesn’t help his average.
It is a crime that it took 6 weeks for someone to pick up Torenson, but Huskies did just that, dropping Ahri from his flex. Doug grabbing Dorfus this past week maybe indicates a changing of the strategy in Baltimore.
Another league that everyone is sleeping on Marshall as he is still available. He’s RB 5 People!
Group 8
Leader - Me of course - 880.32
Best Draft - This Guy
Last place - Woody
Worst - Everybody else
What can I say, I built my team on the Tower of Cooter, and it was glorious.
Steel swapped Philly D to replace Yellowknife in week 2. Gucci dropped Reed for Torenson which I guess was an OK decision. But man, when I dropped Brannigan for Olsen the rest of the league fell to their knees and wept with sadness knowing they could never come back.
The best player remaining is probably Taffy, but I don’t need him since my roster is stacked. I guess one of these other fools could still pick up Reed or Helanan too but it won’t do much good.
*Group 9
Leader - MrStennett - 933.46
Best Draft - MrStennett
Last Place - caltroit_red_flames
Worst - caltroit_red_flames
Back to an actually competitive league, Mr. Stennett has taken the lead over Mavfatha in this one, partially because of his smart play in getting Valentine, von Matt, and Blaze giving his team the best 3 possible pass catchers. Things haven’t gone well for cal who has had a troublesome season from the likes of Anoai, Harwick, and Justice.
Mavfatha has made the solid moves dropping Both Harp and Orosz for solid players Olsen and Taffy. But Oles made the best move dropping T Swift for Torenson early on. It’s like he knew something we didn’t.
Best players available would be Falconi at QB, Marshall, Gump, and Swift at RB, and Varga and Helanan at WR.
Group 10
Leader - Vander Jones - 879.12
Best Draft - Vander Jones
Last Place - wuma - 650.04
Worst - Run_CMC (now 3rd)
Vander is still the top dog with smart drafting of Cooter, Sunnycursed, Von Matt, and Blaze. Run burned bright for awhile and was leading the group with smart picks of Brown, Olsen and Murphy, but he is falling back due to below average work from Lander, Nagasawa and Havran.
Vander is also the only one who has made any moves, dropping Reed for Torenson, and then changing his mind by picking Reed back up and removing Swift.
Yet another league with RB5 Marshall still available, to go along with Swift, Varga, and Helanan. You all be trippin.
Group 11
Leader - Jonny2x - 860.7
Best Draft - Graciejj2000 (now 4th)
Last Place - YoungTB
Worst - YoungTB
The top 4 in this draft are all within 80 of each other so it is still anyone’s race. Jonny has taken the league thanks to the Brown/Torenson Combo, to go along with Blaze and von Matt. But BigKicks, BWIII, and Gracie are all still in it. TB didn’t even finish his draft so he is the worse in the league by a wide margin.
Both Jonny and BW has used both their moves with BW swapping the Hawks for Philly D, and Canton for Gump. Jonny flipped both his kicker and D, adding Nola over Chicago and Harris over Crisco.
So Marshall and Canton are both still available, as well as Varga and league leading Hawks D.
Group 12
Leader - Eco - 823.36
Best Draft - karl - (now 5th)
Last Place - Moosecop - 731.84
Worst - nunccoepi (now 2nd)
The hardest draft to pick by far because it was so even has my first place team in 5th and my last in 2nd. But this league also has the smallest gap from worst to 1st as last place is within 90 points of the lead still. Eco has the top 3 Wrs, and Moose whiffed on L’Alto, Reed, and Swift.
Nunc dropped Gump for Torenson week 2, and Eco swapped Orosz for Murphy and Hawks for Philly.
Gump is now available, as well as Marshall, Hawks D, and Helanan
Group 13
Leader - nickyvmlp - 894.56
Best Draft - tlk742 (now 5th)
Last Place - dizzyDC - 741.6
Worst - Trautnet (now 3rd)
This is another super even league as the last place team, Dizzy, has the highest score of any last place team. He was another unfortunate enough to get L’Alto, and Swift has been struggling. Whereas nicky has Christ, Olsen and Marshall helping his team out.
Only one waiver move was made, and that was ven_knight dropping Orosz for Torenson in a move that has helped him stay close.
Best player available is Varga, and everyone else is pretty set.
Group 14
Leader - ScorpXCracker - 878.16
Best Draft - LGMForever (now 3rd)
Last Place - RaiderNation - 673.52
Worst - ScorpXCracker (now 1st)
Last group has flipped my predictions on its head. I had Scorp as the worst and now he is the best, so I guess my strat has flaws. Part of my criticism for Scorp was the drafting of two TEs. But he made the smart move of dropping L’Alto in week 2 and replacing him with Varga, who has been a great addition. Additionally, Valentine, Wizardry, and Blaze has led his team. But moonlight is right on his heels having Brown, Maddox, Christ, and Marshall leading his team.
Scorp’s addition of Varga is the only move made so far in this league.
Best player available includes QB4 Falconi, and Terry Taffy.
That is it for my deep dive number 2. I appreciate all the feedback and I will be back after the season for one more episode of BigRed’s NSFL Fantasy Deep Dive!
You can find my updated charting here, where I analyze each player by position ranking.
