Hey everyone! With weeks three and four finished up in the Prospect Bowl, I thought some players deserved some recognition for how well they played. These players directly helped their teams succeed and had a huge impact in every facet of their games. Without wasting any more time, let's get on to the players.
Week 3, Game 1: Midwest Wolfpack vs. Pomona Mongoose
Dorian Cope was instrumental tonight in a 24-13 comeback victory for the Mongoose. Cope, who totaled just 52 yards receiving on 5 catches, was able to find his way into the end zone twice in the final quarter of the game, bringing his team from down 13-10 and the start of the quarter into the lead and the win. A red zone threat out of Texas, Cope has been solid every week so far for the Mongoose, having posted at least 50 yards receiving in every game he has played.
Chico De La Agua had a phenomenal first game tonight for the Midwest Wolfpack. Even though his team could not secure the win, De La Agua posting a highly impressive stat line of 10 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. De La Agua was everywhere tonight, wrapping up every living being that came near him. A 23 year old run stopper from UConn, De La Agua is a strong and quick presence at the linebacker spot, who has running backs scared to challenge him and his performances in this Prospect Bowl. Something tells me that this isn't the last time we'll hear this kid's name in this league.
Week 3, Game 2: Flint Sun Tropics vs. East Cobras
Otto VanJensen was a playmaker all over the Tropics defense tonight despite the uninspiring performance of the offense. The Tropics defense really tried to keep the team in the game and did a very good job at stifling the Cobras. VanJensen tallied an impressive 12 tackles, along with 2 tackles for loss. VanJensen decided no one would get around him tonight at the linebacker position and no one did. It was a magnificent showing by the 20 year old speed rusher from Kent State. It's always nice to see players from these smaller schools perform well, especially a fellow MAC alum! The most impressive part of VanJensen's game tonight may have been his blocked field goal attempt of Cobras kicker Gabriel Johnson. This is not the first time that the streaky VanJensen has put up impressive numbers in the Prospects Bowl and I don't think it will be his last, as long as he can run out his consistency issues. It was an eye-opening night to some of the folks who might not have heard VanJensen's name before.
JimJam FlimFlam may have been the best player on a loaded Tropics defense tonight. At the strong safety position, FlimFlam was expected to be a force in the run game and make quarterbacks afraid to throw over the middle. I don't think anyone was expecting FlimFlam to deliver with 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and an interception! FlimFlam was making plays all over the field and stalled many Cobras drives before they reached the end zone. He is a huge reason as to why the Cobras offense was only able to score 12 points. Coming out of Boston College, the 22 year old playmaker was able to tie his career high of tackles in a game and earned his first interception and forced fumble. This is easily the best game of his young career!
Matt Ammons, a linebacker for the East Cobras, has started to take his game to the next level. Ammons was able to post a Prospect Bowl-high 15 tackles against the Tropics, which narrowly beats out a 14 tackle game from Chico De La Agua. While Ammons doesn't have the flashy stats that players such as FlimFlam and VanJensen put up tonight, he did have a clean 15 tackles and one tackle for loss, including a string of 6 tackles in a row. Absolutely amazing work from the Cobra linebacker. Going from Hollywood, Florida to Duke and now to the NSFL, Ammons is a 24 year old huge run stopping linebacker. Towering at 6'3 and 260lbs, I don't think anyone wants to go near him any time soon. A genetic freak like Ammons will surely find his way back onto this list at some point in his future career.
Week 4, Game 1: East Cobras vs. Midwest Wolfpack
Wait, what? You're telling me that Matt Ammons put up another 15 tackle game? What an absolutely bonkers achievement for the young linebacker. He ties the Prospect Bowl-high with himself from last week. To out into perspective how crazy it is to have back-to-back performances of 15 tackles, totaled 15 tackles in weeks one and two of the Prospect Bowl and proceeded to match that production for two games in a row. Ammons is now just two tackles off from the total lead throughout the Prospect Bowl.
In a game dictated by field goals, Cobras kicker Gabriel Johnson was able to kick his team to victory. A gutty, hard fought 12-9 win for the Cobras had their points come solely from the right leg of Johnson. After an off game the week before where he went just 2/5 on his kicks against the Tropics, Johnson came back with a vengeance against the Wolfpack and made it his mission to redeem himself. It was a great showing from the inconsistent Johnson and the Cobras are hoping that this game gives him the confidence he needs to make it in this league. Hailing from Minnesota, the 23 year old kicker chooses to focus his training more on accuracy than power, a philosophy that paid off well in week 4. Johnson came to the field tonight to chew gum and score points. He was out of gum.
Who else besides Chico De La Agua could earn this spot in the list? A week after stuffing the Mongoose, De La Agua went for a long stat line of 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, one sack, 2 passes defended, and even an interception for the Wolfpack! The only thing that De La Agua couldn't do tonight was score the ball to give him team the win. De La Agua is establishing himself as a premier linebacker in the Prospect Bowl and has been shooting up draft boards in the recent days. Currently leading the Prospect Bowl in tackles with 47 after 4 games, it looks like the sky is the limit for the young linebacker.
Justin Kehoe is a name that took me by surprise when looking at the box score. The incredibly young corner that was born, raised, and went to college in Missouri made it his mission to shut down Jay Cue and the Cobras passing attack. Posting 5 tackles at the cornerback position is impressive enough before you had the 2 interceptions that he also sniffed out. Neutering the Cobras passing game turned out to be a massive impact, as the Cobras failed to find the end zone all game long. Kehoe was a massive impact player tonight for the Wolfpack secondary and he can't get enough credit for the performance. After growing up idolizing and modeling his game after all-around players like Janoris Jenkins and Jalen Ramsey, Kehoe finally had his breakout game, grabbing his first career interceptions and proving that even an 18 year old player can make it in this league if they play their cards right.
Week 4, Game 2: Pomona Mongoose vs. Flint Sun Tropics
This game was a slugfest. It isn't often that you see a game with the score of 19-0, but that's the exact kind of win that Lucky Dickerson helped his team pull out tonight. Dickerson put the ball through the uprights a total of 5 times tonight, with 4 being field goals. Even more impressive than the number of kicks he made is the distance that he nailed them from; kicks of 45, 52, 54, and 36 yards put Pomona in the driver's seat and they never looked back. Oh, and should I mention that the 22 year old Auburn alum doubles as the team's punter? Dickerson punted 7 times throughout the contest, totaling 318 yards and pinning the Tropics within their own 20 yard line a respectable 3 times. The field position game is as important as anything in football, and having a guy like Lucky Dickerson can keep the momentum out of the hands of the opposing team and give his own team plenty of space the breathe.
For our final Standout performance, we'll need to find a player from the Tropics that did their best to help win the game. Seeing that the offense didn't score a point, we'll have to look at the defensive side of the ball. There, Maurice Virtanen really jumps out at me. Despite being a bit slower than your average linebacker, the 21 year old out of Michigan State really put together a performance tonight. Bringing down the ball carrier 11 times in a night is a tough task. Adding a tackle for loss and pass defended to his score card, Virtanen brought the ruckus and did his best to keep the Tropics in the game. Unfortunately for him, the offense is about the most incompetent group out there and it's hard to win a game by scoring zero points. In the first three games of his young career, Virtanen was very consistent, putting up 5 tackles in every game. Respectable, but not quite what you want from a run stopping linebacker. Tonight, when not many other on his team showed up, Virtanen proved that he could step up when needed to try and bail his team out of a hole. Tonight could be the first in a string of solid games for the linebacker.
Honorable Mentions
Victor Bravo and Bender Rodriguez, a quarterback and wide receiver duo for the Pomona Mongoose, were able to dominate the air attack against the Wolfpack. Bravo threw for 3 touchdowns and almost 200 yards. It was a very good game from the quarter back position, which rarely has good players at this level. Rodriguez was able to haul in 7 catches for 93 yards, earning the best performance of the week among receivers.
Net Gaines was able to secure an interception with fewer than 2 minutes to go as his East Cobras gutted out a victory against the Wolfpack. Gaines' interception allowed the Cobras to advance the ball another 10 yards before hitting the game winning field goal with just 4 seconds left in the game, completing a miraculous comeback that start with under 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Gaines also pitched in 7 tackles and 2 tackles for loss from his linebacker position.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I know it was long but it was fun to watch the games and look at how everyone did. I had to leave a few players off the list to focus on just the greatest performances sadly. If anyone thinks another player deserved to be on here, feel free to reply and discuss!
