Taking a look at the DSFL leaderboard with the season over half over (8 games in the book) we see Ricardo Rose (RB, Myrtle Beach Buccaneers) leading the league in total touchdowns with 10, all coming on the ground. He’s really established himself as Myrtle Beach’s top redzone threat in their prolific one-two running back punch of Rose and Sarvepally.
Yardage wise the two have near identical lines (150-723 and 146-730 respectively), but Rose has scored 10 of Myrtle Beach’s 14 rushing touchdowns through the first 8 games. While the DSFL record of 20 rushing TDs in a season appears to be safe, the Myrtle Beach record of 13 (Knox, 2027) seems within reach so we’ll be following Rose closely over the last 6 weeks of the season. In this stretch Myrtle Beach has two more games against the winless Norfolk Seafolks, against whom Rose already has 6 TDs in his first two games in which Myrtle Beach scored a combined 86 points. Look for these key matchups in weeks 9 and 12 as key factors in Rose’s pursuit of the team record.
If you ask him about it however you won’t find it on his mind (or at least he won’t mention it). As part of this story we asked Rose how he felt about his prolific scoring output so far this season, to which he replied “well frankly nobody in our locker room cares about any stats or records beyond the win-loss record against which we’re judged each and every week. Our single goal is to clinch a spot in the playoffs and contend for an Ultimini championship. Our rushing game this season has been top notch, as the big fellows up front have cleared a lot of room for me and Sarves to find openings and first downs. We both feed each off each others success, and while of course we both want the ball as much as possible, I’m his biggest cheerleader when he’s on the field and I know he’s the same for me. Pair that with a top level QB leading the league in passing yards, and you have a recipe for team success we have seen thus far. We just want to keep winning and have success as a team, and the rest will follow”.
Even if he’s not watching, we certainly will be as we look for big things from this DSFL rookie over the last six weeks of the regular season and into the DSFL playoffs.
