Norfolk Seawolves - Week 1 and 2 Review
Week 1 Portland Pythons @ Norfolk Seawolves
Final Score 31-9, Seawolves on top
What an incredible game to start off the season for Norfolk. Absolutely crushing the Pythons. I plan on breaking down the win for Norfolk and seeing the keys to their success week 1.
When looking at the stats, this game doesn’t look one sided at all,
Both teams were pretty bad on third downs, which lead to a lot of punts. Total yardage was barely different, with Portland passing more and running less than Norfolk. The yards per rush for both teams were quite good, and Portland actually led in that category. From these stats alone, it would look to be a fairly close game. The biggest difference came from penalties.
With nearly 3 times as many penalties, the yardage Portland gave up made the difference in this game. Portland gave up 6 penalties of 15 or more yards while Norfolk only had 1 penalty of that distance. That 15 yard penalty was committed by Matt Cross, but he made up for it by also causing the only turnover of the game.
A 27 yard pick six, the Son of Havoc put the Seawolves up 28-3 at the end of the half, practically sealing up the game for Norfolk.
Week 2 Norfolk Seawolves @ Kansas City Coyotes
This game did not go as favorably for the Seawolves, losing 21-6. The stats in this game show a near identical pattern to the previous game.
A close game statistically, Kansas City showed considerably more success in the air than Norfolk, with QB Chika Fujiwara having a great game going 14/20 for 172 yards and an average of 12.3 yards per attempt, to finish up with a 96.2 QB rating. Also, running back Andrew Nova had great success on the ground with 29 attempts for a total of 131 yards and a touchdown. Flash Panda for the Seawolves had an even better game, rushing for an incredible 162 yards on 24 attempts. However, Panda had a costly goalline fumble in the second half during an impressive drive by the Seawolves. This fumble was the nail in the coffin for Norfolk, completely halting their momentum. One final notable statistic is penalties.
While these numbers are much smaller than the previous game, Norfolk, the away team, still had 5 times the penalty yardage as KC.
Overall, Norfolk had a strong outing in their first two games, going 1-1. A turnover was the defining moment in both games, a pick six to secure a win, and a lost fumble to lose their chance week 2.
