This is a list of the top 11 cornerbacks in the S22 draft. I’ve done two other lists so far, one for linebackers and one for defensive ends, and I can promise you that this was for sure the most difficult. There are just so many great cornerbacks in this year's draft, making it nearly impossible to rank all of them. On this list though, I wanted to place less emphasis on the players’ DSFL statistics and more of an emphasis on overall activity. To be fair, DSFL statistics don't matter, but if these players had great years on the field, I will still shout it out.
-----------------------
Top Tier: These two corners are two of the best outright players in this year's draft. They have what every team wants and more, and I can assure you that they’ll be around the league for a long time.
Colt Mendoza (200 TPE)
Colt Mendoza may as well have been confirmed to be selected number 1 overall in this year's draft. He’s been everywhere, using his statistical knowledge and extensive sim ability to impress GMs from all teams. He’s been writing great media articles and has gotten into the league in a big way in recent weeks. Though his TPE might not be as high as some of the other guys on this list, he definitely makes it up with everything else. He’s had a nice year on the field as well, racking up 53 tackles, an interception, and 7 passes defended. He also has the second largest bank account on this list, with $76 million stored away at the moment. This should give his suitor confidence in his ability to sustain his TPE growth through the seasons to come. There’s really nothing Colt could do to cause him to drop from the number 1 spot on this list, so I applaud stego for making such a great name for himself this early in his career.
Tyler Oles Jr (215 TPE)
Oles is just about up there with Colt Mendoza, and this pair definitively make up the top 2 corners in this draft. Oles’ main advantage comes from his long history in the league. Having been a member since the very beginning, Oles has created quite the bank account for himself. If anything I think Oles almost deserves the number one spot because of his pure dedication. There are very few members who have remained active in the league since S1, and any team who decides to pick Oles up can sleep well knowing he’ll definitely remain active for many, many seasons to come. Oles also has a 15 TPE advantage over Colt, and, despite that really meaning nothing in the grand scheme of things, it's good to know that he’s been a tremendously active earner so far. Oles had a nice season as well, with 3 interceptions and 13 passes defended. Overall, no team can go wrong picking up Oles, and he’ll for sure go on to do great things in the league.
-------------------------
Elite: These next 5 players are all terrific players, but just haven’t broken into the top tier with Colt and Oles. All of them have been consistently earning both TPE and cash, and will definitely be great players upon arrival into the NSFL.
Brandon Booker (218 TPE)
Brandon Booker is basically just Tyler Oles lite. Absolutely no harm intended however, as Oles does have about a 20 season headstart on Booker. On a serious note though, Booker is another spectacular cornerback. He’s got a bunch of TPE, the highest on this list actually, he’s got a bunch of cash, $40 million is plenty to sustain a player for ~3 seasons with NO other source of input, which I’m sure Booker will not do. He’s been active in the media department, has been posting daily on twitter, and had a great performance this season as well, with 2 picks and 11 passes defended. Booker I’m sure will go on to do great things in the NSFL and is going to be a great pickup wherever he goes.
Andrew Witten (205 TPE)
Andrew Witten is very similar to Brandon Booker, high TPE and a nice looking bank account. Not much needs to be said about him since it was basically all said in Booker’s summary. Witten didn’t have as good of a season as Booker however, as he failed to record an interception. Though I could definitely dwell on this fact and make assumptions about Witten’s lockdown ability or his strength to outmatch the receiver at the point of attack, I’m just not going to do that since IT DOESN’T MATTER. With his current growth rate, Witten will be a great corner and just saying, you can't record an interception if the quarterback never throws the ball to your guy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Chester Sweets (202 TPE)
I could have definitely given this spot to someone like Cadillac or Zamir, but, and there's no bias here, I decided to give it to Chester. My main reasoning for that is that Chester is a GREAT teammate. He’s the only guy on this list I've had the privilege of extensively communicating with, and let me tell you that it is definitely a privilege. He’s a great guy to be around, constantly supporting the squad and actively engaging with everyone. More than that though, he’s also a great player. He recorded a couple picks and 16 passes defended this past season and has been really active on the forums, creating 2 hour long podcasts and completing all tasks. As a result, he’s accrued ~$20 million (I’m not sure if his mock draft podcast has been graded yet, if not, add a couple million to that), which, though not as high as some of the other totals on this list, is definitely a respectable number that will allow Chester to be a productive player for many years to come. Overall, I really can’t recommend Chester enough. A great all around dude and a terrific second wave option after Colt and Oles are off the board.
Zamir Kehla (213 TPE)
Kehla is very similar to Chester in terms of raw statistics. He’s got a couple million more stashed away in the bank and a dozen or so more TPE, but what he lacks in, and I think this is the main reason why he may fall further than he anticipates on draft day, is personality. Now, that's not to say he doesn’t have personality, since we can all attest to the fact that he definitely does, it's just that his “act” can be a little excessive at times. I got to talk to him a bit in the Birddogs prospect room prior to this year, and he was definitely extremely active and eager to make his mark on the league, which are two traits that can be beneficial for all teams. But, his personality has caused some disapproval to boil up around the league. As a bit of a disclaimer, I haven’t had the privilege to witness his behavior in the Pythons LR, so I’m not sure if his cockiness comes only outside of the Python walls or if it extends within them as well. As a player though, Zamir was really terrific this past season. He managed to snag 5 picks and 10 passes defended, some really great stats. He’s also a great media writer and has produced some quality content. Though I would recommend teams to be cautious about picking Zamir, I can’t discourage him as there are definitely more upsides than downsides to him.
Cadillac Harris (198 TPE)
Harris is yet another great corner (all of the ones on this list are) who deserves some recognition. I haven’t had the opportunity to talk to him in discord or on the forums, but I’m sure he’s a great guy who is really eager to leave a mark on this league. He’s been earning at a nice rate and falls just below the 200 mark to end the season. He’s also got a nice stock of money stored away, which he’ll be able to use for the next couple seasons. Just an overall great corner who will be a nice pick up wherever he goes.
--------------------------
The Would be 1st Rounders any Other Year Category: These guys have been great earners and great players but are just not up to speed with the top corners in this draft. With some more media, 3 of these 4 guys would be in a way better spot for the upcoming draft. Overall, though, these players are all really great and will be fantastic pickups for any team.
Ben Stackinpaper (201 TPE)
Ben is a bit of an interesting player. It's almost like he is playing out of position at LB or something, given his season stats. He managed 122 tackles, I’m really not sure how honestly, 3 forced fumbles, also weird, and interception and 5 passes defended. Those really are linebacker stats, so I guess I can say that he can definitely get to the ball. Off the field Stackinpaper has been a high TPE earner, but where he lacks is in his bank account, where he has only ~$2 million at the moment. He has purchased his equipment up to tier 4 though, so he has earned a decent sum since entering the league. However, there are some question marks as to his ability to maintain this growth rate without tier 6 equipment, so hopefully he’ll be able to pull that off next season.
Eldrick Avery (215 TPE)
Eldrick Avery has fallen this far on the list only because of his bank account. It just isn’t up to par with some of the other ones on the list. His TPE though? Phenomenal. 215 TPE is a crazy sum, and he’s done that without even purchasing equipment. Had he gotten that 30 TPE boost, we’d be looking at perhaps a top 3 corner on this list. He’s got to keep that in mind for next year and the years following it, since 30 TPE every year isn’t something you want to miss out on. And all you have to do is right some bs about cornerbacks to get there! He also had a great last season, with 3 interceptions and 12 passes defended. Overall I really think he should be higher on this list, he just needs to be more active in the money making department!
Jonathan Altidor (185 TPE)
Altidor is almost like Brandon Booker lite, less TPE and less cash, but still a great player. He’s got ~$12 million in the bank at the moment, which is plenty if he wants to be able to purchase equipment for next season, so that should give him a nice TPE boost off the bat. He's at 185 TPE, which, though not bad, is a little below average for this list. He had a similar season to Stackinpaper interestingly enough, with 111 tackles, and interception, and 4 passes defended. He’ll definitely be a solid pickup in some of the somewhat later rounds, and with continued earning and purchasing of equipment he should turn out to be a really great player.
Thubba Bumper (212 TPE)
And finally to round out this list, Thubba Bumper. Thubba is extremely similar to Eldrick Avery, high TPE but low cash. All these two players need to do is get active in the money making department in order to purchase weekly training and equipment, and they’d be right up there with the best of the best. Even without equipment though, Thubba is looking to be a great player, as last season he had an interception and 11 passes defended. However, Thubba is a recreate, so he comes into the NSFL with the added bonus of almost guaranteed reliability, which could realistically push him above some of the other guys in this category. I hope to see them earning in the near future so that they can really push to the top of the pack!
--------------------------
So, those were my top 11 cornerbacks for this year's draft. So many great ones to rank, so let me know if you think a position should be changed or if I missed anyone you think should have been included! Thanks for reading!
