If you watched the massive NSFL Draft a few days ago, you might remember that I made a comment during the third round, hinting at the possibility of more expansion. To hear some of the other people in the call, you’d think I had called for cannibalism to make a comeback. (Link to the draft right here with a timestamp.) But here’s the simple fact of the matter. There are simply not enough starting openings, even for the players we have right now, let alone if we have more players coming in future drafts. Apparently, S24 may be another dive into the NFL subreddit for more players, and with more people at home than ever, we could be in for another doozy of a draft class. We’re already at a tipping point, and to prove it, we’re going to do a little exercise.
I recently posted a list of every teams depth chart, click here to see it. This was not done out of nowhere. The reason I made that was because I needed to see every player a team had under contract, so that I could do another expansion draft of my own. However, the rules for my expansion draft are going to be a lot more strict, just to show that forming teams, even under ridiculous restrictions, and even without adding any more players to the player pool, would still be possible. For this challenge, each team will be allowed to protect two quarterbacks, six skill position players (RB, WR, and TE), twelve defensive players, and one specialist. This should hurt none of the current teams, because who’s going to worry about losing their #7 option on offense or their sixth best coverer? Also, I won’t simply protect the highest TPE earners with no regard for the future. These protections will go at my discretion, but I encourage you to tell me how you’d do it differently if you were one of these teams. Now, let’s see who all will be protected in this process.
Baltimore Hawks: Chika Fujiwara (no #2 QB), Apollo Reed, Darrel Williams, Asher Quinn, Chris Kross, Nick Kaepercolin, James Lewandowski, Terry Taffy, Matt Hole, Sardine Beaner, Nuniq Annastesia, Guy Nikko, Derred de Ville, Dex Kennedy, Juan Marston, Eldrick Avery, Ben Stackinpaper, Walt Green, Logan Uchiha, ForTheBrand

So with that large chunk of the league off limits, what kind of team can be constructed? Ladies and gentlemen, the 13th NSFL team, the SimCity Newbies.
QB: Chris Ramos (S21, 282, active)
RB: Ryan Leaf Jr. (S15, 985, active, retiring), Rick Skuff (S21, 250, active), Orien Drake (S18, 414, inactive)
WR: Errol Maddox (S12, 660, active), Susan Cash Jr. (S22, 236, active) Leeroy Jenkins (S22, 216, active)
TE: Jammerson Irving (S15, 640, inactive), Gronk Robertkowski (S21, 228, active)
DL: Mike Franchet (S18, 305, active, retiring), Claude Miller II (S22, 193, active), Benson Harris (S13, 252, inactive),
LB: Jaylen Storm (S16, 531, active, retiring), Mark Radson (S22, 157, semi-active), Samuel L. Sackson Sr (S22, 112, active)
CB/S: Lamont McKinnie (S15, 800, inactive, retiring), Quentin Sinclair (S15, 540, inactive), Takeda Okura (S17, 350, semi-active), Danny Grithead (S10, 229, active), Victor Moreno (S20, 328, inactive)
K/P: Diego Espinosa (S18, 181, inactive)
Chris Ramos is an active participant in the sim and is maxed out in the D-League, and yet with both Cooter Bigsby and Colby Jack ahead of him on the depth chart, he has almost no mobility to the main roster until his contract expires after Season 23, and then what? Chicago will have to find a replacement for Rose Jenkins before S23. Maybe Austin? Easton Cole’s contract expires at the same time. If Franklin Armstrong signs for another season and then retires, then maybe Orange County, but as it stands, there’s no direct path for him to a starting gig, despite the fact that he'll be a viable starter over the next couple of seasons.
Ryan Leaf Jr.’s attempt at ring chasing will probably be thwarted as Austin simply has too many stars on offense (Mako, Tidwell, Gaines, Larson) and/or young phemons (Jeeta, Kichwa) to keep one last year of the Leaf Storm. Rick Skuff is #3 on Baltimore’s depth chart, and may see some playing time, but would see a larger role in SimCity. And Orien Drake is one of those players the sim seems to like, so him as an inactive #3 hurts no one.
On the receiving side, we get two vets. Errol Maddox has been around forever with no signs of slowing down, but gets bumped from Baltimore thanks to a litany of youngsters (Asher Quinn, Chris Kross, Nick Kaepercolin, James Lewandowski). And Jammerson Irving is just starting regression, but is still one of the best tight ends in the league on a team that could move on from him at any time. Alongside them are Susan Cash Jr., Leeroy Jenkins, and Gronk Robertkowski, three prospects deep on their current teams’ depth chart, each with huge upside.
The front seven is where things get sketchy, so sketchy that it’s actually a front six, we’re running a nickle defense here. We’ve got two solid players on their last season in Franchet and Storm, another guy off the free agent pool in Benson Harris who has maybe two years left before an auto-retirement, and three mid-round rookies who need a lot more seasoning, but could be thrown into the fire in necessary. In the secondary, we have two more retirees this season, a still great Lamont McKinnie and Danny Grithead on his last legs. Victor Moreno and Quentin Sinclair are both solid but IA, and Takeda Okura has some potential. Diego Espinosa is a starting caliber kicker with plenty of tread left on the tires.
Not the most inspiring team ever, but the offense is solid with plenty of youth. As someone who saw a winless expansion team, I don’t think this is that. However, you can’t just bring one team into the league. A second expansion team would be necessary, and that team is the Mushroom Kingdom Fighting Yoshis.
QB: Luke Skywalker (S22, 250, active)
RB: Richard Gilbert (S22, 261, active), Ludicolo Bigby (S15, 435, inactive), Kevin Fakon (S22, 139, active)
WR: James Bishop (S12, 483, active), Bona’beri Jones (S13, 423, active, retiring), Alyx Sabor (S21, 194, active)
TE: Tree Glebman (S21, 279, active), Zee Rechs (S22, 124, active)
DL: Jaune Arc (S21, 261, semi-active), Jackmerius Tacktheritrix (S21, 165, semi-active), Johnson Harding (S18, 308, inactive),
LB: Sandip Bakshi (S14, 390, inactive), David Ginsberg (S13, 239, inactive), Ryan Scott (S21, 172, semi-active)
CB/S: Deon Taylor (S15, 733, inactive), Trey Staley (S12, 404, active, retiring), Jon Bois (S21, 264, active), Ozamataz Buckshank (S22, 116, active), Caleb Beck (S18, 274, inactive)
K/P: Kal Solarin (S22, 131, active, retiring)
At this point, Luke Skywalker is basically just a trade piece. Honolulu has Corvo Havran currently starting and already has Jim Waters locked up to a contract and seems to be the heir apparent. A position change seems like the only way he’d see the field as a member of the Hahalua. Or he could stay at QB and become a starter for an even newer expansion team. The running corps would have two rookies along with the veteran speedster, Ludicolo Bigby. And much like the Newbies, there’ll be two vets in the receiving corps. James Bishop gets snatched away from Colorado again, and Bona’beri Jones’s final season will be in Yoshi green instead of Mardi Gras purple. The three young receivers are Tree Glebman, Alyx Sabor and Zee Rechs.
Again, things look bleak in the front of the defense, with only half of their front six showing any signs of life. Deon Taylor makes a good lockdown corner and Jon Bois makes for a solid safety, while everyone else is either super young or old. Not a good unit by any stretch, but it’s still a unit with some potential. If Kal Solarin can be talked back into the fold, that’ll save MK a draft pick down the road.
So both of these teams are bad, no one can deny that. But we were still able to create two more teams with no more extra players, and an actual expansion draft would net these two teams some better players, especially on defense. This is just to show what the absolute floor from these two teams would be, and that floor is this: two bad, but complete teams with a handful of actives on each team. A more favorable expansion draft would give these guys a real fighting chance. This should be a question of when, not if, for the people in the front office. More players are on their way, and this league needs to expand to accommodate our league’s growing popularity.
