Now, I know I’ve been slacking recently, and I didn’t write a game review for yesterday, but don’t worry, the 0.4 people who actually read these, I double up on game reviews at some point to make up for yesterday. It may be tonight, depending on how motivated I am. And well, today is a Sunday. And Sunday means football. My team won, not without some scary moments, like when Grant almost died, and I admit, there was a considerable amount of screaming at the TV because that idiot didn’t get ejected after those dirty hits, but I love Flores. Miami’s going to the playoffs! Now, forgive me if my sentence structure is out of place, I’m very tired and I’ll try and make this sound as coherent as possible. I was watching some compilations on youtube, as one does, of bizarre college football endings, and that inspired this game review for today. I wanted to find a “bizarre” game with some wacky plays and blunders. Now, for some reason, the game engine this league uses does not like wacky plays and blunders, and that is what separates it from literally any other game engine. So I did a considerable amount of digging to find a good game, and by that I mean like half a minute.
The game I will be doing my 11th game review on is set in the glorious season of S13. The week is 2, as the Second Line travel to San Jose to take on a very good SaberCats team. This game would have big playoff implications, but not necessarily for NOLA. These conference games are always important. Let’s get straight into the madness.
NOLA receives the opening possession, and it starts out solid and 2 scrambles by Maximus for 14 yards puts NOLA in a good possession, but as Maximus tries to escape the pocket to scramble for a third time, Trey Staley catches him and pulls him down for a 6 yard sack. A dropped pass by Swift forces the first punt of the game. The punt is downed at the 2, and after a rush by Canton for 4 yards to get out of their endzone, Christ’s first past of the game is intercepted at the SJS 11 and returned for 7 yards. Tyler Swift runs in the ball on the very next play and scores 7. NOLA has an early lead, 7-0 with 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter. SJS gets the ball right back but they go 3 and out. NOLA starts off well on their next drive, getting a first down, and then a 2nd and 2, but a huge 11 yard sack on 3rd and 2 forces another punt, and the sacks have been killer for this team. San Jose coaching staff decided to play aggressive on the next drive, and went for it on 4th and 2 from their own 41 yard line. A run up the middle for 3 yards helped them convert, but they wouldn’t get another first down from there, and they punted back. Already we’re seeing some weird discrepancies we don’t see before. Early int, early going for it on 4th down, early pair of sacks, and I can tell you that this game is going to be fun. On a 3rd and 10 on NOLA’s next drive, Maximus finds Fyodorovich down field for 29 yards. A play later, Maximus again finds Fyodorovich, who’s RAC ability gets them 23 yards. 2 straight drops later, and Maximus goes to Fyodorovich again on a 3rd and 10, but a great tackle by Poopsie forces NOLA to kick a FG on 4th and 3. It’s 10-7. On SJS’ next drive, an unnecessary roughness penalty looks like it’s going to kill the drive, and it ends up becoming a 3rd and 15. NOLA DC calls an all out blitz, and Oles burns his cornerback, as he catches a simple rainbow on a streak, but he gets tripped up at the 2 yard line after his DB caught up with him. 1 play later Canton punches it in for the TD, starting the 2nd quarter off well, as SJS is tied with NOLA, 7-7. NOLA starts on their own 4 yard line on the next drive, but passes for 19 yards and 15 yards paired with a couple runs puts them on SJS side of the field. On a 3rd and 15, Maximus finds Fyodorovich for 13 yards, so it’s a 4th and 2 on the SJS 39. The offense stays on the field for the 2nd 4th down attempt this game. But of course, they manage to convert on a pass to DiMirio for 12 yards. The drive stalls out there and they kick a FG, making the lead 13-7. SJS goes 3 and out on their next drive and gives the ball back to NOLA with 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. 3 straight passes by Maximus for 44 yards puts NOLA in great position, but the SJS defense once again bends but doesn’t break, stopping the drive and forcing another FG. NOLA goes up 16-3. SJS doesn’t go 3 and out, but they only get 1 first down before punting back to NOLA. NOLA tries to do something with 3 minutes to go in the half, try and get some late points, and a great pass to Swift sets them up at the SJS 42 yard line. 3 straight runs results in nada, and they are forced to punt. The SJS defense playing exceptionally well. SJS gets the ball back with 9 seconds left at their own 20 yard line. They decide to try and throw the ball, which thankfully falls incomplete, and with 2 seconds left, they line up 5 wide for some reason. Christ passes to Brannigan, but Kelta jumps the route and intercepts the ball, and he manages to run all the way back for 6! The worst possible scenario happened for SJS, and blame this all on the SJS coaching staff who decided to pass the ball twice, when they were over 50 yards out of FG range with 9 seconds left. NOLA goes into the locker room at half up 23-7. Some bizarre plays are certainly going on.
SJS knows they need something here coming out of the half, down 16 at home. So what do they do? They get 1 first down and then stall out and punt. But NOLA goes 3 and out and punts right back. But a sack forces SJS to punt back again. And NOLA goes 3 and out AGAIN and the half opens up with 4 consecutive punts. But it’s a game of field position. And SJS starts at their own 46 yard line. A big completion to Oles sets them up in the redzone, but a sack stalls the drive out and forces a FG, cutting the deficit to 23-10 with 7 and a half to go in the 3rd quarter. A penalty and a sack ends up making it 4th and 32 for NOLA, and they have to punt back. SJS goes to the ground game and pounds it all the way to the NOLA 9 yard line. They bring the ball even closer, but a QB sneak gets snuffed out and kick a chip shot FG, making the score 23-13 with a minute to go in the 3rd. NOLA can only get 1 first down before punting again, and NOLA seems to be choking this game away. SJS gets the ball back down 10 with 14 minutes to go, and they have to do something here if they want to win, so what do they do? They go 3 and out, of course. On a 3rd and 10 for NOLA on the next drive, Maximus drops back to pass, throws a screen to Swift, who runs for 7 yards but then coughs up the football, which is picked up by Troyski, giving SJS amazing field position. SJS immediately gets to 4th and 1 and they kick a FG, making it 23-16. You don't win off of field goals. On the 2nd play of NOLA’s next drive, Maximus finds an open lane and decides to scramble, as he tucks it and runs, and he breaks away for 24 yards before getting the ball punched out from behind, and SJS recovers the 2nd consecutive fumble from NOLA. But this time, SJS doesn’t get great starting field position, but they make that all back anyways on a 39 yard dime to Justice. Christ to Justice. Lol. SJS can’t do anything there, and they kick a FG again, making it 23-19 with just under 7 and a half to go. Their kicker is carrying hard here, as he’s 4/4 on the day. NOLA needs to eat up the clock with a long drive and score hopefully, and not go 3 and out. So on the first play, Maximus finds Fyodorovich for 37 yards, making San Jose fans sad everywhere. SJS defense holds strong there, forcing a chip shot FG with 4 and a half minutes to go, making the score 26-19, meaning SJS can technically score here and force OT. The drive starts off perfect, with a 12 yard pass and a 20 yard run. Then Christ finds Oles for 26 yards. 58 yards on 3 plays, and the NOLA defense is really choking here. Christ throws twice to the endzone, the first pass is broken up, but the 2nd one is hauled in for a TD. The crowd goes crazy and SJS has pulled off the impossible. But wait, the extra point was, no good??? The kicker has been 1/1 on XPs and 4/4 on FGs, but the extra point was no good? Now there’s only 1 and a half minutes left in the game and SJS has no timeouts. They attempt an onside kick, which was recovered by NOLA, and they hang on to the game and win, 26-25.
This was a doozy. A 4 turnover game with a missed XP on the game tying touchdown. This must have been fun to see live, and I wish I was there for the reaction. That poor kicker. But the SJS offense really struggled this game and got bailed out by their kicker here.
That’s all for tonight folks, cause I’m too damn tired to write another game review.
