After going through my first season of the DSFL as a brand-new player and going through it all, I wanted to reflect and recap my experience since this has been a fun experience so far and I’m thoroughly surprised at how much I’d enjoy my time in this league compared to my past experiences in discord leagues revolving around Madden.
Fresh Creation
I didn’t have any big expectations starting the league, but I was really excited to see the different archetypes and how the sim was going to be played. I think the biggest thing that really stuck early on was how attentive Rookie discord was. I was able to get questions answered quickly that way and I found lots of resources that helped me navigate the site. It’s not the most user friendly, but once you figure out where things live it becomes a breeze like anything else. I picked running back not knowing how competitive the class would be and figured I’d be able to work my way up the chain once I got onto a team and I didn’t mind being a relief or 2nd back up in the depth chart. I do regret starting so late though since my top counter parts are incredibly ahead in TPE.
DSFL Draft
“Oh boy more discord servers!” That was my first thought through the DSFL scouting process. So many scouts reached out and it was really cool to be treated as a ‘hot’ prospect even though I was unknown. I thought it was cool to see what the teams had planned and to get a general feeling for the type of people they were looking for. I got a lot of the same questions which I didn’t mind at all, but it was tough to answer the ‘how active do you think you’ll be’ when you are a new create and haven’t had any sim league experience like this in the past. I tried to be as honest as possible and I think that tanked my draft stock but I wasn’t 100% sure if I’d stick around. Just about every team in the DSFL reached out and come draft day, I was happy to be picked at 33rd overall. It felt like a good place to land in the 5th round and considering how active the other top running backs were and there wasn’t a need at running back for a couple teams.
Norfolk Season Recap
I was honestly pretty psyched to join a team that wasn’t doing so well. I’m a big fan of rebuilds and trying to turn a team around in Madden, so the thought of playing for Norfolk was a big positive in my eyes despite coming off a 2-12 season. I thought there was a chance for me to make a big impact on the team in the offensive line-up and as I progressed in TPE it was cool to see how well my player started to improve on the field as well. I started getting more snaps in the middle of the season and playing with an experienced veteran in Mr. Forty-Two contributed a lot to my numbers in the end. We finished as the top 2 rushing offense in the league and I’m proud I ended the season breaking 1000 rushing yards, a 4.4 yards per carry average, and 7 touchdowns. It was an awesome rookie season and we improved to a 7-7 record. Getting shut out by Bondi Beach was rough, but I’m glad we made it that far and I was able to contribute to some key wins to even get us into the playoffs. I’d say going from the worst team in the DSFL to playoff contender is a great improvement and we did the best we could with our roster.
Locker Room Highlights
I have to take some time and highlight my amazing locker room while I played my first season in Norfolk. I didn’t really have any expectations going into the league what this would be like and I was extremely surprised to see how open and welcoming everyone was at first. It was a breath of fresh air since the internet can be pretty toxic at times, but I found everyone in the Norfolk locker room to be simply amazing. I couldn’t have asked for better GMs in @Jimi64 and @J0EB . As a new player to the sim league, I really needed a lot of help early on and understanding basic things like where to find specific pages and when to collect TPE. These guys set up an amazing locker room that was welcoming from the beginning and helped me along the way immensely. I think they definitely set the standard for what DSFL GMs should be. We didn’t have a spectacular season but our locker room is always active and I think it reflects well on the league when you have 2 GMs that are really focused on the DSFL experience rather than trying to be ultra-competitive all the time. There’s too many awesome people in the locker room to call out so I’ll just give a big shoutout to all the active people in the Norfolk locker room (and yes that includes Scorp).
ISFL Draft
I was really taken aback from the Laser mock draft and seeing so many people pick me as a round 1 selection. I was honored and surprised because of the quality of players in the top TPE tier. I was told time and time again that overall TPE played a small part in evaluating a player for the ISFL so I was glad that teams were given me a good look even though I had a pretty big gap in TPE compared to Xander Creed and Madison Hayes.
Another reason I was speculating my draft position to drop was my desire to play in the ISFL right away. I made it no secret that I was hoping to get to the ISFL as soon as possible and really wanted a chance to make a name for myself early on while accumulating stats. I really love the Dotts cards in the league and wanted a chance to get to the Hall of Fame by playing early in the ISFL. Many GMs I spoke to in the ISFL were honest with me and said that running backs usually stick around in the DSFL for another season and many need more TPE to make an impact at the next level. I was content with playing some full back or being a back up at the next level. I knew that it was going to be a long shot and that being a new create and not some hyped veteran user was going to count against me since it was a pretty big demand.
Watching the ISFL draft live was really fun and as every name called and it was getting towards the end of the first round, I was getting excited since I knew I’d be called sometime early 2nd round. I was incredibly shocked to hear my name announced for the 9th pick. I almost had to do a double take since I wasn’t quite sure I heard correctly. I knew that Hayes was still on the board and that they would be the better pick TPE wise over me. However, I think the connection to Blasoon with Norfolk helped and the fact that I was looking to play in the ISFL quickly. Orange County traded away their starting running back and needed a replacement quickly next season. Overall I’m super psyched to join such a prestigious franchise.
Looking forward to the next season and what the new sim will bring! I’m excited to try out a new power back build and hopefully get some traits soon!
