Apparently this is a thing people do. I'm a Wide Receiver in the S1 draft. Ask whatever questions you like and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
---
Lainncli: Who is Robert Phelps and why should I care about him?
Phelps: You probably shouldn’t. I’ve heard some praise from a few other players that I’m not sure is deserved. I really think I’m more of an outlier in this draft. I had a great finish to my college career with U of W, but I don’t really know if I can keep up at this level or not.
Lainncli: How did playing in Washington contribute to your development as a player?
Phelps: The coaches in Washington were amazing. I’ve been running the same sorta routes my whole career and haven’t had much for success, the coaches I had a couple years ago had given up on changing my game and just kept getting me on short pass assignments. Catching the occasional short pass doesn’t make you stand out. This last year was different though, I felt a renewed faith in me when management changed over some of the coaching staff and they started to show me things I could be doing better.
Lainncli: Is there a team you're particularly wishing to go to in the draft?
Phelps: With all the teams starting from scratch, I don’t really have a specific team I’m looking to join. I would just hope to end up in an environment that’s fun and encourages me to keep training hard.
Lainncli: Is there a team you're particularly wishing to avoid?
Phelps: Not at this time, although I’m sure rivalries will form and there will be teams down the road I won’t like once we start playing.
Lainncli: This is a very tall WR class, with no gadget players looking to run out the slot, and you're very average as far as both height and weight go. What do you bring to the table that others don't?
Phelps: I probably don’t have a whole lot more to offer than the other receivers, but I know I can train hard, and with the right coaching I could be a valuable asset.
---
Killshot: 10 Posts, no signature. Question 1, what makes you stand out from other draftees?
Phelps: So far, I’m not sure there is much that would make me stand out above others, but I think that will be the case for about half of the draftees for season 1.
Killshot: Do you think you're better then Josh Garden?
Phelps: I have heard so many good things about Garden, I definitely don’t consider myself better than him. I’m willing to work hard and put in the effort, but I am not sure I have the natural talent that he does.
Killshot: Have you heard from GMs?
Phelps: Not really, I had a chat with one in passing, but I don’t think he even knew I was a draftee.
Killshot: What round is your ceiling?
Phelps: With how many players there are in this draft, I don’t expect to be taken anywhere in the first 3-4 rounds. Somewhere after that is where I’ll probably land.
Killshot: What round do you think would be a reach to pick you?
Phelps: The draft is going to be an interesting night for everyone involved. I don’t envy the GMs who have to make these decisions, it’s gonna be a tough one. In my opinion, I’m a mid-round pick at best.
---
Ballerstorm: Have you studied any of the other WRs in the draft?
Phelps: I haven't really gone through the competition quite yet, to be honest the draft class being as large as it is can be a bit overwhelming. Outside of Garden, the only other guy I've noticed is HFFO Mademe, but that guy seems like a bigger scrub than me.
Ballerstorm: Which team has the best looking logo?
Phelps: The Otters, by far. Sorry to everyone else, there are some great logos in the league, but I love that Otters logo.
Ballerstorm: Why did you choose to go to Washington?
Phelps: To be honest, I didn't have a ton of choice. I only had one school talk to me about joining out of high school and that was Washington. I reached out to other schools and didn't get much of a response. They were willing to give me a shot and it was close to home, so I went for it.
Ballerstorm: Tell us about your best and worst games of your college career
Phelps: My second game with Washington was by far my worst. In my first game with Washington I had 2 fumbles and 4 incomplete passes sent my way. They kept feeding me and I kept screwing up. You would think I'd consider my 1st game to be the worst, but they essentially benched me in game 2. Sitting there watching my team lose was one of the worst feelings I have ever experienced and I promised myself that I would be better. The best game I played was closer to the end of the season last year. I had finally started feeling in tune with the game. I was making the short catches and gaining yards for the team, but with only a few games left in the season and the playoffs being unlikely for the team they decided to try some longer passes to me. I remember lining up for a play in a spot I was all too familiar with, but this time they had me running straight. No short pass, just go long and hope our QB could hit me. I ran as hard as I had ever run and when I looked back the ball came straight too me. It was beautiful. I caught the ball and kept going. I had to shake off 3 tackles before making it to the end zone, but I made it. It was by far my best experience of my college career.
Ballerstorm: What is your opinion on the combine?
Phelps: It's been a great experience. I'm getting to know a lot of people I had never met before. It is a bit of a nervous feeling, talking to all these great pro players who probably deserve to be here more than me.
---
Perkules: Did you ever get drunk with Austin Serfian-Jenkins in his days at U Dub?
Phelps: There is no way I could keep up with Serfian-Jenkins. That dude can knock em back way harder than anyone else on the team. Some guys tried to keep up but they didn't stand a chance.
Perkules: Why are Huskie better than Cougars?
Phelps: What do Cougar cheerleaders and Cougar quarterbacks have in common? They're always on their backs.
Perkules: How will your 40 time compare to JR3?
Phelps: I dunno, I can drink a 40 pretty fast.
Perkules: Who will have more touchdowns Garden or Phelps?
Phelps: I mean, Garden looks like the real deal. I'm just some guy trying to squeak onto a squad and fit in. I'm not about to go around telling people I'm better than a guy who eats, sleeps, and breathes football.
Perkules: Will you be able to pass our daily hydration tests?
Phelps: Those things are daily? Does beer help?
---
Kendrick: Who is better Michael Phelps or you?
Phelps: Michael Phelps is a fantastic athlete, I’m pretty sure he would kick my ass in a swimming competition.
Kendrick: What's your favourite piece of candy?
Phelps: Snickers bars.
Kendrick: Do you frequent your local bar regularly?
Phelps: I’m a bit young to drink in my local bars, but sometimes I make the drive up to Canada to drink at bars. Normally I just drink at home or with friends.
Kendrick: Character above talent, or the opposite?
Phelps: I feel a bit biased here. I don’t feel like my talent is greater than the other guys in this draft, so I’m gonna lean towards Character, because I believe I can bring that to a team.
Kendrick: Ever been to a strip club?
Phelps: Who hasn’t?
---
Tommy Incognito: A moment at UW when you knew you could take your game to the NSFL?
Phelps: To be honest I’m still not sure. I had a couple great games at UW at the end of last season that made me believe I could make it, but I’m still trying to prove it to myself.
Tommy Incognito: Nike or Underarmor?
Phelps: Underarmor
Tommy Incognito: Favorite Superhero ?
Phelps: Aquaman. No one likes aquaman, he’s like that useless guy except those very rare cases where the bad guys are also water people for some reason.
Tommy Incognito: When face with a cornerback CLEARLY intent on blitzing your QB do you abandon your route and chip hard or do you motion the QB to audible to a secondary option?
Phelps: I trust my QB to make the right play. If he feels that he can still make the play I would let him go for it rather than trying to call the shots.
Tommy Incognito: First purchase you have planned for the riches you make in Pro Football?
Phelps: It would be a hot tub for my parents. They’ve always wanted one, but they don’t have a lot of money, so I’d get one set up as a surprise for them.
---
Jogn: You seem to have focused on your strength and agility over your hands. Could you speak to that?
Phelps: I’ve tried to work on all aspects of my game, but I have been told before that I need to work on catching a bit more. It’s something that I want to improve along with most other aspects.
Jogn: A few WRs are surely going to have to shift to another role. Do you have any history at another position?
Phelps: The only other position I’m familiar with is Water Boy. I’d be open to trying something else though.
Jogn: Between you, Romeo Devitt, and Wren Piper, there's a lot of offensive skill positions coming into the draft, but not a lot of buzz. Do you plan on spending draft day together, and which of you do you think will be first off the board?
Phelps: My family is coming in for draft day, so I plan on spending draft day with them. If I were to guess, I’d say Devitt will get taken off the board before Piper or I.
Jogn: Do you think of Colorado or Yellowknife as your local team, growing up about halfway between them?
Phelps: I’m halfway between those two, but it’s a shorter drive for me to get to San Jose, so I would consider San Jose to be my most local team.
Jogn: There seems to be a lot of 1998 and 1999 birthdays in the draft this year. Do you think players are coming into the draft younger because they want to get paid, or are you ready to start?
Phelps: I’m not entirely sure I’m ready to start, but I’ve had a couple coaches encourage me to try. I can’t really afford school and the scholarship I got only pays part of it, so this just felt like the better option.
---
Zoone16: You obviously know that Robert Phelps is also a successful hockey prospect getting drafted by an SHL team this season. As another Robert Phelps, do you have any similarities with him?
Phelps: I don’t really follow hockey, didn’t even know there was a guy with the same name as me.
Zoone16: This being the very first draft, do you expect to see any major steals coming from the later rounds. if so, who are you keeping an eye on?
Phelps: I expect there to be some steals in this draft for sure. I just don’t really know who they will be. I guess that’s more up to the GMs to figure out.
---
Grapehead: What's your favourite type of car?
Phelps: My dream car is a 1976 Corvette Stingray in black. I absolutely love that car.
Grapehead: Would you rather freeze to death or be killed by fire?
Phelps: I’ll take the fire, but this is an awful question, either would suck bad.
Grapehead: Who is your favourite family member?
Phelps: My mom. She has supported me in every way since I started playing football. She is my number one fan.
Grapehead: When did you have your first kiss?
Phelps: In high school this random girl who I didn’t know walked up to me and kissed me, then slapped me and walked away. It was the weirdest thing. I found out later that she wasn’t really paying attention because she was on her phone and thought I was her boyfriend.
Grapehead: Where is your favourite place?
Phelps: Voodoo donut shop… It’s so good.
---
Saliva: Do you swim?
Phelps: I went once or twice as a kid, but I'm not very good.
Saliva: Is Seattle Riot still the best team in shl?
Phelps: I don't pay much attention to hockey, I have some buddies who are big Riot fans, they would go nuts if I said any other team was better, so I'm not really gonna answer that one.
Saliva: Did you dream about playing in the Seahawks?
Phelps: I did as a kid, but the more I played football, the more I felt like I wasn't going to make it all the way. Being drafted into the NSFL would be a great honor, I'm just trying to focus on that right now.
Saliva: Who's the best WR in the Seahawks?
Phelps: Jermaine Kearse is fantastic.
Saliva: Are you already better than him?
Phelps: Naw, I'm not all that good to be honest. I'm just trying to eek out a living here.
---
Gooney: Is there any team that stands out to you?
Phelps: I'm liking the look of the Otters, but that's just because I've met one of their General Managers before and he seemed like a nice guy.
Gooney: What is your favourite pizza topping?
Phelps: I'm gonna go controversial here and say pineapple. I know, many of you are against the whole fruit on pizza thing, but it's delicious.
Gooney: Do you see yourself playing on the outside or in the slot?
Phelps: Traditionally I've played more in the slot, but it felt great playing on the outside a few games near the end of last season, so I'm open to that option.
Gooney: Where do you rank yourself in this WR class?
Phelps: Looking at the huge class of Wide Receivers, I can't come close to justifying myself being in the top 5. I'd expect to land somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Gooney: Which WR would you compare yourself to?
Phelps: I was a big fan of Wes Welker when he was playing, so I'd like to style myself after him if I can.
---
TheWoZy: Why is Garden overrated?
Phelps: I don't think he's overrated, he's one of the best wide receivers of this draft, it's clear that he's put in the effort and he absolutely deserves to be near the top.
TheWoZy: What's special about Vinny Cox?
Phelps: He's a defensive tackle for one. I think teams are going to be looking hard at their defensive lines for this draft. Us offensive guys should be a secondary consideration.
TheWoZy: Which QB you don't want to play with?
Phelps: I don't really know the QB's much yet, so at this point there isn't one I want to avoid. I just want to have good communication between me and my team, that's all I ask.
TheWoZy: What's your daily training?
Phelps: I go for a run every morning for about an hour. After lunch, which is basically unseasoned chicken and broccoli every day, I hit the gym for a couple hours. Every couple days I get out on a field with my trainer to run some routes and get some catches in. That's pretty much it.
TheWoZy: Are you a first rounder?
Phelps: Hahaha, no. I saw a few people put me in these mock draft things up in the first or second round. Those guys are nuts. If someone drafts me that early I'm going to laugh at them, because that's an awful pick. Teams should be spending early picks on other important positions first, or maybe a great #1 wide receiver, but I really think I'm more of a number two guy.
---
:.Elite.:: You seem to be very popular, do you think you will be a first round pick?
Phelps: Not a chance. I think I'm one of those culture pickups. I'm happy to chat with everyone and make the team better in the locker room. On the field I think there are better options than me out there.
2. Which WR do you look up to in the league, if any?
Phelps: So far I'm not sure. With the league just starting up it's hard to tell who is going to rise above the pack.
3. Do you model your game after any current NFL WR?
Phelps: Not really a current one, but I do want to take after Wes Welker, but that might be shooting pretty high.
4. If you could hand pick the QB throwing to you, who would it be?
Phelps: There are so many good QBs going into this draft. I like Ethan Hunt, but really any of them are really great caliber.
5. Is championships or personal success more important to you?
Phelps: Championships. I am a team first guy, I'd rather be on the sidelines of a winning team than the star of a losing one.
---
Sweetwater: Who framed Roger Rabbit?
Phelps: It was Christopher Lloyd. That guy is a jerk.
Sweetwater: Have you beaten the cow?
Phelps: I can only assume you are talking about the cow level in Diablo. Yes, yes I have.
Sweetwater: Vanilla or chocolate?
Phelps: I'm more of a vanilla guy. Chocolate is alright too though.
Sweetwater: What would you do for a Klondike bar?
Phelps: Eat a pound of butter.
Sweetwater: Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Phelps: Here you go create another fable.
