With only 5 games left in the DSFL regular season, things are heating up in both the north and south, but the race on either side looks very different.
First, we’ll start with the south, where we have two teams currently sitting on 7-2, seemingly running away from the others. Norfolk and Tijuana look to battle it out among themselves for that top spot, while the Dallas Birdogs and Bondi Beach Buccs sit at an uncomfortable 3-6 each, both in need of a minor miracle.
While not mathematically impossible, either team would have to go 4-1, while hoping one of the top two go 0-5. And even that will only tie them 7-7, leaving other factors necessary to go in their favor.
With all due respect to both teams, I’m calling that race a done deal, they will have to fight it out for third place in the DFSL South.
As for Tijuana and Norfolk, it’s going to be a tight run to the finish to see who gets that top spot. They have already played each other twice, splitting the wins between them, both being victorious at home.
Including the pre-season, the Seawolves had an incredible 8 game winning streak, while the Luchadors currently sit on a 5 game streak. Both have been impressive throughout the season, leaving us with a huge headache trying to figure out who’s going to head into the playoffs as the top seed.
Momentum is with Tijuana with such a great streak, but you just can’t ignore the fact that Norfolk have been the best team both offensively and defensively in the division so far. They’re actually best in the whole league for defense, and only 1 point off the top in terms of total points scored.
Perhaps the strength of schedule will tell us more? Sadly not. Both teams still have to play Minnesota, Kansas, Portland, and London. Then for the other remaining game for each, they both have divisional games, as we said two teams sitting on 3-6 and struggling to keep up.
With such a close call, this reporter can only see one notable factor that separates these two teams. Norfolk have one more home game remaining than Tijuana, making them slight favorites to head into the playoffs as top dog. Come back next week where we'll see if these two have shown any signs of separation in the meantime.

Saving the most exciting for last, we now look at this 4 horse race in the DFSL North.
Portland admittedly are sitting pretty at 7-2, but at least the 3 win deficit Minnesota faces seems more attainable than what we’re seeing in the south. On top of that, London have started to get their stuff together, pulling themselves out of a 5 game losing streak with a big win against Kansas, that keeps them in the running for second place. Speaking of Kansas, they’re currently struggling through a nightmare of their own, with 4 losses in a row now, after a very promising 2-0 start.
As you can see from the standings, nobody is truly out of the running, or truly safe from dropping a spot. While Portland are strong favorites to make the playoffs, the top spot hasn’t been tied up yet, with Minneosta ramping up their offense with two big wins in the last two games, including a fantastic and important 30-27 win against Portland.
However, it does seem like the hot race to watch right now is for that #2 spot. With only 1 win between each team, anything can happen between the Grey Ducks, Coyotes, and Royals, especially with the newly invigorated London only 2 wins behind second place now.
Looking ahead to the 5 games that will decide this race, we need look no further than next week, week 10, for a hugely important game between Kansas City Coyotes and Minnesota Grey Ducks. Either Minn jump two ahead and look odds-on favorites to clinch the playoffs, or Kansas finally wake up from their lull and tie things up at 4-6. Meanwhile, London will be looking on, likely hoping for a Coyote victory, while they themselves take on Tijuana in what will be a monumentally tough and important game. A loss there, and a win for Minny, will have a lot of people calling it a day for the DSFL North, giving Portland and Minny the likely qualifications.
Keeping us on the edge of our seats, the Portland Pythons still have to play both of the top seeds from the south, which could be a great indication of what we can expect to see in the playoffs. At this point, the Python dressing room has to be confident in their progression, and will be eager to face either of these two teams in the first round of the playoffs.
The biggest concern for the Royals right now is getting out of an atrocious slump at home, with a 0-5 record in London so far. It may actually be beneficial to them that 3 of their remaining games are away from home.
The Minnesota dressing room has been bouncing with anticipation, having outright taken the #2 spot from Kansas, and currently sit as favorites to head to the playoffs with Portland. I recently interviewed the team to see how they were feeling, but none were coherent enough to put together a straight sentence.
Which finally leaves us with the sad-case Coyotes, licking the wounds of 4 losses in a row. They’ve been trying to turn it around, even bringing in a new co-GM to help breathe some new life into the team, but it turns out he is absolutely useless and out of his depth. Like… you should see this guy. Woof.

Well, that’s all for this week’s report.
We’ll be back next week with the result of that all important Minny Kansas game, on top of an exclusive interview with new Rookie on the block, defensive end Greg Strongjaw of the Kansas City Chiefs, who will be showcasing himself as an artisanal ale brewer, Lego enthusiast, and ballet master.
