REPORT: Star Liberty TE Paul DiMirio, who broke out on the field after the team's bye, had a breakdown on the field after the clock expired. It was a well known fact that the rookie needed only 71 receiving yards to edge out star TE Ricky Maddox for the title of most TE receiving yards. The blowout that the Liberty conducted against the Sabercats saw DiMirio benched in garbage time. As the tight end looked at the stat sheet, a terrible feeling came over him:
DiMirio let out a blood curdling scream and melted to the ground, where he broke down into tears. Teammates rushed around him, then, seeing he was just three yards short of stealing the record from the veteran Maddox, gave him sympathetic looks and helped him up. However, the crushed DiMirio would not stop crying and collapsed again, wailing and moaning. Medics brought out a cart, and the rookie was helped up onto it and wheeled off the field.
Later, in the locker room, a happy environment did not reach DiMirio, who sat on a bench in the corner of the room. Reports from teammates indicate he was moaning the phrase, "Just three yards!" over and over.
We have not heard from the young TE since the incident, however reports indicate he has improving somewhat.
