Finally, after over a week of trying to catch and sit him down, Angus Winchester has agreed to meet the media for a Q&A session. The 6' 6" Offensive Linemen spent the past two seasons anchoring the line in Wisconsin and has had no shortage of press about him so far including a bio piece in Sports Illustrated as well as some controversy surrounding his weight.
The floor is open for questions.
Man, I was expecting you guys to come out swinging. That's what I get for listening to my agent.
1) When I'm training hard I normally eat around 8,000-10,000 calories a day. I know most guys swear you need to break that up into 6 meals a day, but I don't have time to do all of that. I tend to stick to 3 really big meals everyday and maybe toss in a couple of protein shakes in between. It's worked for me so far, but man sometimes I feel like I have to eat until I'm sick. It's really the hardest part of training.
2) Thanks, I'm glad you like them. Funny you ask, I originally planned on getting two full sleeves when I got this done. I had a few hundred extra dollars lying around after one summer and I called a shop to see if they would do two tribal sleeves in my budget. The guy said sure, $600 and he could do it. Well I walk in the door and he looks at me and says "No way dude! Your arms are the size of my legs!" So this was as much as I could get for my $600 that day.
3) I think my size and strength are going to stand out. A lot of guys on TV are only talking about technique and hand work and whatever. But when the defensive end stunts away and the big 320lb defensive tackle comes at you hard, technique ain't gonna help you.
4) This year I'm looking for a championship. I don't care if they carve my face onto a mountain or if they call me the biggest bust in history. If I keep the quarterback upright and open up holes for the tailback and we get some wins, I've done my job.
5) I think anybody that doesn't answer with 1 here is an idiot. But I know I can't expect to nail it every play. You just gotta get out there and keep grinding away at these guys.
Thanks again for the questions bud.
1) Hah! You sure? I always thought I looked more like a fashion model. I think intimidation works on some guys, but there are other fellas out there just as big and as mean as you, and when you look into their eyes all you see is anger and violence. Against those kinda linemen, the only way to dominate them in physically.
2) I always try to get better at every part of my game. Specialization is for insects. I don't really believe you want a specialist in a linemen, not this year in this league. There are too many holes to fill to look for guys that only fit one role. I just went out to prove that even though my technique is a little rough, the potential is there for it to improve, fast.
3) Man I was just talking about Lane Johnson yesterday when I called my grandpa. Funny thing. Good tackle, that guy is a workhorse. I can't say I blame the guys using drugs, a lot of these guys want to be the best and will do anything they can to get there. I wouldn't bother with it, I think I already have what it takes, and I don't need to risk my future for it. But if some guy is barely hanging onto his job and could lose a paycheck if he doesn't get better....wouldn't you?
4) I think avoiding stupid penalties is the best aspect of my game. Getting a false start will kill your drive faster than a sack. Holding penalties, well, sometimes I'd rather take one. If I'm getting beat and he's about to sack the QB for 10 yards on his blindside, you better believe I'm grabbing onto that guy. I'll take a hold before my guy gets hurt.
5) I see a ton of competition this year. There's still a lot of teams looking for linemen, and not enough to go around. But there are some real monsters in the draft this year, and some of them aren't even being talked about. I hope I end up on a team with one of them.
1) Jenny Craig? Nah, man 1997 hasn't called me in a while. But my agent did say something about someone from Nutrisystem or P90x or Spanx or something like that calling him. What's a guy gotta do to get a beer deal?
2) I don't know if that would be the right fit for me, wrestling and all. I don't think I'm a good enough actor to do anything like that. I'd probably go back to the farm after football and raise some horses and goats.
3) Oh hell, the Uber on the way over here. Some Ford Fiesta or Fusion or another clown car like that. I knew coming out to LA was going to be bad but that was just embarrassing. He'll probably need to replace the tire on that side of the car.
4) I don't know, that's above my pay grade. I figure they think it'll get more women to watch football or something and they just pretend to care. Pretty stupid stuff. But raising money is good I guess.
5) Turner Luce, Otto Delupe, and Upton Leftus
Who let a GM in here? Someone check his press badge. Nah, man, you're cool, thanks for coming.
1) 1 rep raw I hit 565 pounds in a competition last year. I think I can do better.
2) Is a sandwich a hot dog? Do you mean is a hot dog a sandwich? Because otherwise you're leaving out a lot of sandwiches and I can't get on board if pulled pork isn't a sandwich anymore. I've put a few hot dogs in between normal sliced bread plenty of times before, and if meat in some slices of bread ain't a sandwich I don't know what is. Hot dogs are damned good. Damned good. Now I might go get one after we leave.
3) Man I would love for my team to draft Marcus Boyd and stick him at left guard next to me. That guy is the real deal. Big as a house and strong like bull. That's what you want on the line.
4) Man they're gonna call me ihop by the end of the season. Nah I'm really not sure, I think these d-line guys are going to blow up and get real strong as soon as they hit the big time, and pancakes are going to be hard to come by. As long as I make a hole I don't care if that linemen is on his feet or not, that back is long gone.
5) Run back, give a quick "that's on me" tap to the chest, and don't say a word about it. We're onto the next play.
1) Two words: World Champion. They wouldn't know what hit them.
2) Is a steak sponsorship a thing? I figured I might be able to land Burger King but I'd cut Omaha Steaks or someone a big discount if they let me buy ribeyes wholesale.
3) I know I can. I could have at 14 years old. Now could I bench 3 kickers? That's a challenge.
4) How about "We servin' pancakes 24 hours today son!"
5) Surprised to know? Ummm, I like cats. Not that I don't also like some big 'ol dogs too, and horses and goats and just about anything with fur. But I also like cats. They're just so cool and have that IDGAF attitude. Big man with a tiny kitten. Love em.
1) Kinda tough question, considering it's only about the line and not about the rest of the team. Being a piece on a great team no matter where the weakness is would be a great feeling. But being on a weak team no matter how strong your unit is would be a terrible feeling. I guess I'd prefer to be a part of a strong unit like what the Cowboys (or 2017 Browns could) have because you have the chance to really help each other be the best possible. Nobody is trying to cover for someone else's weakness, you just go out and do your job and hope the rest of the team can capitalize on the opportunities your unit made for them. Teamwork is underrated.
2) Favorite carb is easily cornbread. That stuff is delicious. Dip it in some pot liquor from some collards or black eyed peas and you're in business!
3) I'm not sure I understand the question, what do you mean by range? Do you mean where will we be drafted? I think you can expect at least one lineman to go in round 1.
4) I don't see it as a dice roll. If you want to win games you need men in the trenches. I may not be a specialist like Marcus, Bender, or Ben (nothing but respect for those guys) but there are a ton of positions to fill and any team looking for any sort of balance on their offense is going to want a strong, agile, and quick guy walking point. Specialists have their place on a deep line. But when every team might have on or two choice guys you need generalists. That's what I am, I get in there and grind it out, no matter the situation.
5) I wouldn't say I was a wall in college, for that you can look at Longshaw. I was more like a tank. I can stand there and take the punishment in pass protection, or I can rev up the turbines and drive you out of your cleats. I see myself still causing headaches for defensive coordinators, but I think these defensive lineman and speed rushers are going to develop really fast at the professional level to keep us on our toes. If you go into game one complacent you're gonna get beat.
1) I played left tackle the last 3 years and I see myself continuing the trend. But I wouldn't be shy about lining up at right tackle or even guard. Wherever gives me a chance to maul some linemen I'm game.
2) I'm going to be at my grandparent's farm back in Tennessee, with my fiance next to me. They worked so hard to help me get where I am I want to be there to give them a hug when they see me move on to the next level, I'm the luckiest man alive to have such great people around me. If my grandpa knows me like I think he does, there will be barbecue ribs and pork shoulder being served. He cooks a pig better than any man and I'll bet my first year's salary on it.
3) Rookie simmer, I'm one of those weird reddit recruits. But don't sleep on me, there's a lot timeconsumer brings that the average GM doesn't know about.
4) I was named by my mother, who was an Irish immigrant. My grandpa tells me she wanted it to have the Irish spelling of Aengus, but my dad thought that was too much. (out of character: Angus Winchester is my dog's name)
5) I think if you're only looking at where someone is currently you can make a good case for guys like Longshaw, Floggity, Gonzalez, and Boyd. They all have good tape and measurables. But if you are looking for the, what do they call them...intangibles, I'm your guy. The smart GM isn't analyzing where someone is now, they are analyzing where someone can be over the next 5 or 10 years. I can tell you that they shouldn't be worried about someone's footwork or their hands, they need to focus on who is big, strong, and will only get stronger. When you have to stop Franklin Harris at 310lbs and strong as an ox, do you want a 295lb lineman defending you? Of course not, you want a guy who is bigger and stronger. Because you're gonna get beat, and when that happens technique won't save you, strength and size will.
The floor is open for questions.

1.) For a man your size, how often do you eat? How many calories?
2.) The tribal tattoos are a nice touch for a man your size. Are you planning on getting more?
3.) What aspect of your game is going to stand out the most this time next year?
4.) Are you looking for playoffs or All-Pro team this year?
5.) How many sacks on your Quarterback this year is too much?
Thanks for opening up, and good luck in the Draft. I expect you to go very early.

I see you've put an early focus on developing more in the run game, are you looking to be balanced from the get go, or are you going to lean on the run game more?
I like your style and everything you represent. You remind me a lot of one of the best tackles in the NFL, Lane Johnson. What do you think about athletes who use performance enhancing drugs?
Would you consider yourself disciplined when it comes to holding/false start penalties? How hard have you been coached so far?
As an offensive lineman, your value is currently at its ceiling. Are you surprised by the lack of competition at your position?
