I’m writing this while awaiting a verdict on my player creation approval, but it’s not going up until that actually goes through. About two hours after I posted my article on Sunday, I got a message saying that my player would not be approved, some very short reasons why, and then no actionable options to take to deal with this issue. I talked it over with some people, then eventually came back and asked to speak to someone in HO to sort it out. HO sent me to appeals, who I gave a whole ass formal appeal to, and then got told that they had no authority and I should’ve spoken to HO. I’ve spent a rather stupid time waiting (still am while I’m writing this), despite this being something that was handed down within 2 hours and could be resolved by a conversation taking a similar amount of time. But, if I’m posting this, it means that it’s finally been resolved in some way or another.
I should first go out of my way to say that I did not nor currently have any plans to sexualize the character. Despite it being a slight part of my developing style in writing for scripts (actual stuff I’ve submitted for classes), a much stronger part of my style is to take a character, have the audience make assumptions about the character on their own, and then subverting those expectations as I develop the story and character. My goal in the article was to introduce the concept of the character, establish a hook for the audience, and then allow the audience to react to their own conclusions about the character. And I thought that it went about as expected. I expected some level of memes, half expected personal attacks but hoped they wouldn’t be there, and I figured that the reaction would largely be “Jiggly’s doing some weird weeb shit again.” I was prepared for that. I wasn’t really prepared to be told that I couldn’t actually create the character.
Being in this league for literally five years means that I’ve seen a lot of the league’s history. From what I can tell, there’s probably less than 4 people still around who’ve been here longer than me. So, I figured that I understood some level of precedent in character creation, in code of conduct, because I was around when that kind of stuff was written, developed, and changed. I was talking with one of the other S1 guys and we could both list off a bunch of users and player names that would be deemed as “sexual” or “inappropriate.” Hell, even now there’s still some out there. I thought I knew where the line was, but “the line” isn’t exactly codified, nor should it be. It’s a dynamic thing that needs a lot of room for nuance and flexibility. And, it seems like the flexibility on it goes the other way into making what I wrote appear over the line despite my own intentions.
During the appeals process, I talked to a few different old guys about the situation. These are people who’ve known me for 4 or more years, who’ve seen what happens to me whenever I do anything in this league. One of them asked me “Why do you keep doing this to yourself?” And, on some level, it comes from not feeling like I’ve done anything that matters here yet. I don’t want to leave until I’ve done something I feel proud of. I’m proud of the stories I provided for Dakota Reid in the SHL and Dottie Morimura in the PBE, but the ISFL has always evaded me, despite being my first and most consistent league. I felt like I was getting somewhere in the story of Mai Fukushuu, but it was cut short and it hurt when it happened. I knew I wouldn’t be able to tell the story properly even if I tried to continue through all of the personal issues I had in the league, so I left. I keep trying to come up with characters I want to write for and I’ve failed way too many times. This time, I have a character I do want to write for.
My initial concept wasn’t that deep, you could hear me make a joke on an SSL broadcast about wanting to make a catgirl goalkeeper who plays like Jorge Campos (soccer joke). I decided that I didn’t want to fully retire yet in the SSL and I wanted to give another try in the ISFL to get that closure I wanted. So, I took the catgirl, gave her a name with cat puns in it, and chose the first render I thought of: Black Hanekawa from the Monogatari series. From there, I pulled from the original character and started to develop an idea of what I wanted to make. And as I started putting together the concept, I drew from some of the stuff that I’ve been writing and other concepts that I find interesting to write about. I wanted to make a character that I’d like to write for and could also fit into the role that I already have in this league. I don’t actually know whether I’ll stay active with a character or suddenly just stop and so I wanted the character to reflect that. I know that GMs will look negatively at my past and I wanted my character to reflect that. But I also wanted to leave that room for growth where I can actually develop the character.
One of the biggest issues that I struggle with when it comes to activity is how much I care about the character’s story. Sometimes I haven’t created a character clearly enough in my head and it eventually collapses without the foundation. But other times, I walk in with a fully formed character and suddenly I have no space to develop from in media and PTs. The best start possible for me in a sim league is a character who comes in strong, loud, and with a clearly defined negative character trait. Dottie and Mai were the two best examples of that, with some of my favorite things to write and sometimes reread. Especially Mai, whose initial Press Conference had a really beautiful contrast with what was the first PT where I really found where I wanted to go with her development as a character, culminating in an admittedly rushed, but ultimately beautiful ending.
I felt that the character that I had crafted had some level of similarity with Dottie and Mai. And through this, I wanted to continue that sort of theme that I had with each of them. Mai’s theme was clear, it was about revenge and the emotional risks taken with building your life around such a negative emotion. And Dottie’s was a bit more unclear, but still as compelling. I think looking back on her story as a whole, it was about maturity and coming to terms with growing up and realizing that true rebellion is becoming the kind of compassionate person that was absent in your own life. With this new character, I started mentally sketching out this character arc that would deal with the consequences of “radical freedom.”
Similar to the themes of the render’s story, it would start with a character completely devoid of any inhibitions. In Monogatari, Black Hanekawa is the transformation of a character who isn’t just possessed by a cat spirit, a sawarineko, but forms a symbiotic relationship with it. The girl came from a stressful life where she was a straight A student, the perfect student council president, and also happened to grow up and live in an emotionally abusive household that had recently turned physically abusive. When possessed by the sawarineko, it allows her to live free from the stress, repression, and constraints of her own real life. But, things go very wrong as the cat spirit begins murdering people with her body. I wanted my own character to go on a similar journey to delve into that concept of a character with no filter and no regard for anything other than her own whims. I wrote the article with that core concept in mind, making sure that it was clear that she held nothing to be sacred.
The story was and still is developing in my head as I try to figure out where it all goes and when. That’s another part of why that article seemed so strange, which is that it was intentionally vague and was intentionally written from a third-person perspective. I don’t want to give away anything really concrete about what the character actually thinks or feels just yet, I want the first impression of the character to the audience be one that is based on what an actual first impression is: How they look and what someone else is telling you about them. Only as you get deeper into the story does the character actually start to feel like they’re talking to the audience about themselves. I find it important in writing for these sim league characters that you don’t really resolve their conflicts until the player themself has actually hit the prime of their career. Basically, try using the player’s TPE gain as a bit of a plot tension line for your story to follow. And given that philosophy and the other philosophy on first impressions, it was obviously going to make the character feel unnatural. That was the goal.
I consider myself a writer, I am in film school for screenwriting, I chose that path somewhat because of what I’d already been doing here and in other sim leagues. And those who’ve been around for a while know that I take my craft seriously. Honestly, way too seriously for the needed writing level of this league. But, I take it seriously and do my best to develop and create characters that I care about. I have an artist friend who, when he creates characters, likes to use those characters in a certain way. I’ve had a couple different debates with him, but in the end I’ve always made it clear that if I write a character and I truly care about them, I cannot look at them that way. It feels like that character is my own child, a theme I make explicit in that Mai Fukushuu retirement piece. I just want to see them succeed and, most of all, see them find solace in whatever ending they are given. I’ve heard about certain perceptions over the characters I write and I understand the concerns. But, as someone who has to live with myself and spend a lot of lonely time in my own head, I’ve done enough soul searching to know who I am and understand the different parts of my own personality. I also know that for that same reason, you can’t just take my word for it. But I sincerely hope that you can at least allow for a certain level of openness when I write.
There’s a really good quote from Damon Albarn in Bananaz, the documentary on the creation of the Gorillaz up until the Demon Days concert at the Apollo. It comes from a scene in which he and Jamie Hewlett are having an argument over a phone interview that they just had, their first as the band. Jamie wanted everyone to take the call in character, but Damon chickened out near the middle of it and took over as himself to explain the concept of the band to the interviewer. Jamie calls Damon out for blowing the interview and Damon delivers the excellent line: “I spent years not explaining myself and expecting Americans to get it, and they didn’t.”
I understand that what I enjoy consuming and my own writing coming out of that influence isn’t exactly easy to read and understand quickly for a wider audience. In the past, I’ve explained actions I’d made and instead of providing a level of understanding into my side of the situation, all it did was result in more shit. This time around, I hoped to just tell the story without explaining it, but I ran into trouble immediately. Despite it probably being in my best interest to not say anything, I still want to address those with real concerns because I know that they are there hiding among those just wanting to meme shit. Because I know that those concerns come from a real place and I don’t want you to feel invalidated by whatever decision is made on the character.
If I had to change the character’s name, it wouldn't really change anything. Honestly, it’ll be helpful to have a better crack at a good cat pun name. If I had to change the render, I have a backup, but that may change the story for the character to a level where there’s a higher chance of me not finding anything to grasp in terms of story. But I do hope that I can at least tell the story that I want to tell. The thing that always drew me to sim leagues is the idea of it being DnD for sports. And you can play DnD in a lot of different ways. You can be a min/max dungeon crawl person or, like me, you can toss aside any concept of making your character “good” and just tell a cool story. I hope that with whatever decision that has been made, users can still be allowed to participate in sim leagues however they want.

P.S. The issue has essentially been resolved, but I'm not sure if I will continue with rejoining the league.
