Another season, another training camp to hold for the general public! As a defensive tackle, I know my position might seem the slowest, but it is actually the most impactful to a team's defense as the position can dictate a defense's run defense and how they can collapse the pocket on the QB. So, for this training camp, I decided to show high schoolers a couple of tricks to help boost not only their overall performance but to help their team's defense and teammates out. I showed them how to properly bull rush by putting one hand down and time the release of your hand with the snap so that you can get a head start without getting called for offsides. In addition, I showed them how they can be effective in coverage by showing that depending on the pass play, if you're instantly blocked, you can drop back into the passing lanes and help your LBs and DBs muddy up the passing lanes so that another one of them can rotate and sack/deflect the pass!
If Yates hosted a football camp, it would focus on developing the mental side of being a quarterback. There are a ton of high school and college quarterbacks who have the physical tools to succeed at an ISFL level. But it's much harder to find someone with the combination of both physical and mental tools. Because the ISFL is currently in 2051, virtual reality and augmented reality have come a long way. The camp would have virtual reality headsets that simulate being in the pocket, and from there the person using the headset could practice reading defenses and identifying blitzes. Yates would also teach about how to deal with pressure during big moments and how to navigate and become a leader in the locker room. One of the main things Yates would try to teach the kids is that you don't need to come from a football family or go to a big school to be successful. As Yates himself went to a small college in Montana State and made it into the DFSL, he wants to prove that hard work overcomes circumstance.

First, I will preach on the TEAM aspect of football. It’s natural for us to want to put ourselves before everything else. Football culture often sets us up and celebrates the me-first attitude.
So I have to retrain the player’s brains that football only works when a team is willing to work together for the greater good. I will come up with a team motto that highlights this, such as “For One Another” or “Team Over Me”. Another motto for me as the coach is: "Don’t only speak it but live it." I will do drills that show the importance of different positional groups working together. Here are some samples how to use your best defensive players. If a linebacker type is the best defensive player, put him in the middle of the field. Stack him over top of a nose or d-tackle. This makes the defensive reads on this player super simple. Now he’s free to react and play football. If your best defensive player is a d-lineman, you will call lots of double teams his way. You can free him up from the doubles by calling lots of stunts. Stunt your best d-lineman out of the double to the one-on-one block. This frees him up to make plays. If your best player is a coverage guy, put him as the cover safety. This gives your coverage guy freedom to run around the field. He can assist on a WR you’re worried about or come down and make a run play. 250 words
Step 1 to being successful in the ISFL. Networking. This is a social league full of cliques. Maybe it's better now than it used to be, but in this league it very much is all about relationships and who you know. You want to be a top draft pick? Make sure GMs love you. You want a job? Make sure the job and department heads know you. If you aren't in management chat, make an effort to get yourself in there. At the end of the day, that is where the sausage is made, and where you meet the people who make decisions in the league. Outside of that, just earn TPE. If you earn enough TPE, you can do pretty much whatever you want in the league short of harassment or posting porn (sorry Edd). So step 2 is to earn TPE and improve as a player. At the end of the day winning is important and this league has tolerated some straight up disruptive personalities because of the benefits they provided on the field.
So to train the stars of the future Mark would conduct a training camp over the course of 4/5 days. Each day would consist of a morning of training, each day would focus on a different aspect of the sport. These aspects are physical both strengthen based and fitness based, mental drills (I.e play recognition) and also skill based.
However before each session is conducted there would be a 1 or 2 hour lecture on the drill ahead. The idea of this camp is to prepare the kids as best as they possibly can for the future ahead of them. So the sessions then: Monday = Strength based fitness work. Dynamic and static power, combine drills etc. Tuesday = Metal based work, I.e reading offensive and defensive set ups. Reading OLine assignments etc. Wednesday = Skill based work Thursday = endurance fitness based work. Friday = Skill based work. Hopefully over the course of the week the star will learn loads but more importantly understand what could lie ahead of them.
It is always a great thing when you can share your knowledge to a new group of people, and especially awesome when you can lead them to becoming better at what they do. So being able to be part of the new DSFL Youth Camp is going to be an amazing time. And then for JR to be selected as one of the two Defensive Ends to show the up and coming players is a complete honor.
For the DE's we will be showing everyone how to get in the correct stance first and fore most as that will give you that good base, and be able to come off the line at the exact moment you need to, timing is everything, and if you can hone that skill when you're young it's going to make you a terrific player. The different hitting drills will be another big boon to teach, especially in the changing environment when it comes to player safety. The other major thing we will be teaching is how to celebrate the right way, it isn't about showing up the other person or team, but about showing your fans how excited you are. Code: 196 Words |
