Introduction:
Howdy all, it’s time for a DSFL mock draft, where you can all read and be entertained. It’s probably best if you don’t read my ISFL mock draft from last week, because WOW that was bad. I did not see a run on quarterbacks to start the first round, and that left me with almost no correct picks. But that was a whole week ago, and it’s time to move on.
Methodology:
As a newer player, I do not know the team dynamics well enough to know what users are going back to their alumni DSFL teams, so right off the bat there will probably be some poor picks here. To start, I don’t see any DSFL GMs in the pool, so they won’t soak up any draft slots.
My main methodology here was to check each team roster by positions, and assess each on general count, earning in each position, and trying to predict who is in their last season before getting called up. With that in mind, I’ve graded each team by position in the chart below. Green means that they shouldn’t draft in that position, red means that they are short human players at the position, and yellow is in between. And before people jump on the liberal note of Offensive Line weaknesses, I am an OL prospect this season and there is a large pool to choose from this draft, so yeah, I’m biased.
Now that we know the general team needs, we have the really hard part. We’re picking players based on next to nothing useful in the TPE tracker. Because most players haven’t had an update yet, it’s hard to see how the newer players will do without going through each user’s post history and update thread. So I investigated player activities mostly with bank totals, recent login dates, and selective clicking to verify player earning.
Another consideration here is the draft pool by position in comparison to team needs. There’s only one QB right now and what looks like 2 teams that really need one, so he’s a guaranteed first rounder as a result. Most teams need some help on the defensive line, and there are only 6 defensive linemen total, so you could easily see teams overweight these positions in the first or second round to secure at least one player there. It will be interesting for me to see how these scarcity dynamics work.
And that leads us to the picks! Onward to the draft!
The Draft
Pick 1.01 Dallas Birddogs
Team Needs: OL, LB, CB, S
The Dallas Birddogs select LB Cruella de Ville - @Exilizer
The Birddogs seem very solid on offense, and could really be shored up with some defense. Due to the high impact of a linebacker, combined with a relatively small number of previously proven players in the pool, Dallas selects Cruella to shore up that side of the ball.
Pick 1.02 Kansas City Coyotes
Team Needs: WR, DT, DE, K/P
The Kansas City Coyotes select WR Armor Queen - @Starboy
The Coyotes have a big need for wide receivers after call-ups this season, and it would probably be a good idea to grab one here. The good news is that this is a pretty deep WR draft class, so they may be able to wait a round and pick up a rarer position like Defensive Tackle or Defensive End. But Kansas city goes for Armor Queen here, who has a huge bank and a solid history in the league.
Pick 1.03 Norfolk Seawolves
Team Needs: QB, OL, DT, S
The Norfolk Seawolves select QB Gore Done Ram Say - @deadlunatic
From what I can tell, this is a no brainer, at least right now. The Seawolves need a quarterback, and there’s only one in the whole pool right now. Given that Tijuana also needs a quarterback, they really need to lock down and grab Gore Done as early as possible or be stuck with a Bot at this key position.
Pick 1.04 Minnesota Grey Ducks
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE
The Minnesota Grey Ducks select DE Sledge Hammer - @H0PPY75
Minnesota has a great all around roster for the next few seasons, with the defensive line the only notable weakness. There are only 6 defensive linemen in the pool right now, so picking a DE or DT is a must here. The Grey Ducks go with Sledge Hammer, who should be a solid anchor on the line for a few seasons. They could pick any of the DE or DT prospects here though, and have a great selection.
Pick 1.05 Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Team Needs: OL
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers select OL Remi Musgrave-Smythe - @37thchamber
Bondi Beach seems to have the most well rounded team in the DSFL, with human players at all positions except the Offensive Line. So since the draft has a large selection at OL, they dive in and take Remi here, who is among the most promising linemen in the draft.
Pick 1.06 London Royals
Team Needs: TE, DT, S
The London Royals select TE Bastian Weichselbraun - @PDXBaller
The Royals have a big need at Tight End, and I think that will overcome the scarcity of defensive line players, especially since they have a few defensive ends already to support. London can go after any one of their team need positions, but TE will likely create the most impact. The pick for Bastian is decided on because of his solid earning potential and bank.
Pick 1.07 Portland Pythons
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE, LB
The Portland Pythons select LB Caleb Hayden - @Caleb_H
Portland needs defense, and here they select it with Caleb Hayden. There are only a few linebackers in the draft that are off to a fast earning start, and they decide to prioritize the position over defensive line, which will also be a part of their pick options.
Pick 1.08 Tijuana Luchadores
Team Needs: QB, TE, LB, K/P
The Tijuana Luchadores select LB Brian Duke - @AlbanianValor
The Luchadores are the defending DSFL champions, and get to celebrate that victory by losing a ton of talent to the ISFL. Now they have multiple spots to shore up on the team, and have a tough decision with their first round pick. They need a quarterback, but it looks like Norfolk already swept up the only one in the draft, so they hit their next position of need, linebacker. And it’s lucky they get Brian Duke here, he looks like an active new player ready to make a splash in the league.
Pick 2.01 Dallas Birddogs
Team Needs: OL, LB, CB, S
The Dallas Birddogs select S Diggs Sideline-touchdown - @Dewalt27
The Birddogs use their second pick of the draft to build up their empty secondary, and pick up the only Safety recreate in the draft pool. This gives them a high percentage player in a position of need, and together with their first pick, makes their defense look much better overall.
Pick 2.02 Kansas City Coyotes
Team Needs: WR, DT, DE, K/P
The Kansas City Coyotes select DE Aidan Hutchinson Jr. - @SchwarzNarr
Kansas City traded away their third round pick, so it’s essential to get their needs filled on the defensive line. If Aidan falls to them, it will be a perfect match, with his high bank and waiver time last season on the Coyotes. Aidan could go much earlier if there’s a real defensive line run, but I’ve got him going 10th in the draft overall.
Pick 2.03 Norfolk Seawolves
Team Needs: QB, OL, DT, S
The Norfolk Seawolves select DT Jack Hammer - @NamelessNate
Now starts the run on defensive tackles. Most teams have their key position filled in the first round, and most teams will be fighting for limited resources on the line. If available, I can see the Seawolves taking either Hammer or Rae Jensen here, they appear to have similar potential, but Jack Hammer has the early head start.
Pick 2.04 Minnesota Grey Ducks
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE
The Minnesota Grey Ducks select DT Teddy Rhinoback - @kaleb356
The lineman run continues, with the Grey Ducks getting their DT to match the DE the selected in the first round. They may have limited picks here, but all the tackles look to have a good shot at capping out in the developmental league, it’s all a matter of who will cap out first.
Pick 2.05 Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Team Needs: OL
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers select RB Ben Goodwood - @LB3737
The team with very few team needs has gotten what they needed in the first round, and now it’s time to shore up other positions with the best players available. Bondi Beach decides to work on Running Back here, and with that they should have a deep set of stat players on offense.
Pick 2.06 London Royals
Team Needs: TE, DT, S
The London Royals select DT Carly Rae Jensen - @unconfident
And London shuts the door on defensive tackles in the draft by taking the last one off the board. I show this player as tackle Carly Rae Jensen, but it could be anyone not selected to this point. And if London goes lineman in the first round, they’ll look to scoop up a TE here.
Pick 2.07 Portland Pythons
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE, LB
The Portland Pythons select OL Painted Penguin - @Painted
The Pythons have gotten their most needed position with a first round linebacker, but now find themselves with no defensive tackles available, and picking between OL and DE. They decide the bigger need to fill is offensive line, so they dip into the pool and pull out Painted Penguin, one of the best OL in the draft class.
Pick 2.08 Tijuana Luchadores
Team Needs: QB, TE, LB, K/P
The Tijuana Luchadores select K/P David Doug - @TheSparkyDee
With their linebacker pick safe, and no quarterbacks on the board, Tijuana will need to decide between a Tight End and Kicker in this position. They ultimately decide to go with David Doug, a great K/P prospect that should serve their needs.
Pick 3.01 Dallas Birddogs
Team Needs: OL, LB, CB, S
The Dallas Birddogs select OL Fortified Fridge - @BaconBrother
The third round of picks starts, and teams will begin looking at best value players over their team needs. But there’s still a lot of quality left on the board, and Dallas kicks off the round by selecting Fortified Fridge. Fridge is a top 2 OL prospect in this draft, and will help the Birddogs protect their Quarterback.
Pick 3.02 Portland Pythons (from Kansas City)
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE, LB
The Portland Pythons select DE Amani Barney - @CalvinGolladay
And there goes the last Defensive End (and defensive lineman in total). Portland grabs this pick from the Coyotes and it pays off to fill another need. There’s no way a DE will be available in their next pick at 3.07.
Pick 3.03 Norfolk Seawolves
Team Needs: QB, OL, DT, S
The Norfolk Seawolves select OL Walrus Jones - @caravaggio
Some readers may be wondering why I did 3 rounds of DSFL picks (and congratz for reading this far). The answer is simple, it’s when I figure Walrus Jones will come off the board. While he’s the best player in the draft in my heart, he’ll probably be picked after Fridge, Penguin, and Smythe on the OL, and after most/all the defensive linemen are taken. And that’s ok, he’s just happy to be here.
Pick 3.04 Minnesota Grey Ducks
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE
The Minnesota Grey Ducks select OL Fat Boija - @Snussu
With their DE and DT needs taken, the Grey Ducks get to close out their needs list with an offensive lineman. And while the great Walrus Jones is now taken (at least in this mock), Fat Boija is still on the board, and Minnesota is rewarded for their patience.
Pick 3.05 Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Team Needs: OL
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers select S Julius McMiller - @majesticwalrus8
The Buccaneers have their needs taken care of, and they are in the luxury round of making good positions even better. They take one of the best defensive players on the board in Julius McMiller. Solid new user with a bright future. And his username has walrus in it, which gets bonus points.
Pick 3.06 London Royals
Team Needs: TE, DT, S
The London Royals select CB Jimmy Jeeta - @QuirkyTurtle
With McMiller off the board, the London Royals decide to shore up their secondary another way, and pick up Jimmy Jeeta, the first Cornerback selected in the draft. There is still a lot of talent out there, and they can’t go wrong if they were to also chase TE, OL, or a Safety here.
Pick 3.07 Portland Pythons
Team Needs: OL, DT, DE, LB
The Portland Pythons select WR Johnny Blaze Jr - @JBLAZE_THE_BOSS
With their needs taken care of, the Pythons use their 4th pick of the draft by going after one of the best players available, and grab wide receiver Johnny Blaze. Great bank, great earning potential, and you can never have too many top end wide receivers playing for you.
Pick 3.08 Tijuana Luchadores
Team Needs: QB, TE, LB, K/P
The Tijuana Luchadores select RB Aiden Frost - @LANEFROST
This will be the last pick in this mock draft, and to close it out we have Aiden Frost, who looks to be a great RB prospect and will be a force for any team selecting him.
Afterward
That’s the end of my mock draft. I could go into the 4th and 5th rounds, but at that point most team needs are cared for, and I’d have to navigate what each team though was “best value” for them. One thing is for sure, there’s still a ton of talent all the way into the 4th round. Writing this piece has given me a great perspective on the S38 draft class, and I’m glad to be a part of it on my first player.
Good luck to everyone this week!
