(S38) Offseason Task

Coming off my rookie campaign on my second player in this league I am still just amazed at how some people have been a part of this league for so much longer than I have. My first player came to the International Simulation Football League back in Season 24 because I was listening to my friends continue to talk about this new interesting league they had just found and it sounded right up my alley. However, this is not the point I am trying to make with this tasks. The area I want to focus on when it comes to this tasks is one that interests me the most out of any topic that I have faced in any of the 3 sim leagues I have had the privilege of being a part of. This topic is that of community engagement. I want to focus on the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to engagement of the community as a whole here in the ISFL. Overall, I have had the joy of meeting some close friends through the ISFL. Friends that I have been able to stay connected with outside of even the ISFL and even managed to go out and have a beer with in real life. This is where the good comes in from this league. There are so many positives from this community and some of the people here have the potential to be more than just another member on the site you chat with or play dot football with. That kind of culture is what I would call the good of this league. The ability to fit in and find more people that helps you to grow your social circle is something that makes me very happy to continue to be apart of the ISFL. Transitioning from the good and heading on over to the bad I want to take a look at a couple of things that I feel like I have not been a fan of in this league. Some of these things from the community have included problems with looking at bigger pictures and also taking the league to a whole new level of seriousness. While I appreciate all the work a lot of these people have put in, I will not always agree with the means on how things get done. Luckily, that is ok! It goes right back to the good of this league that allows us to not worry about having differing opinions at times. Overall, the league does a great job trying to create a place for everyone but, as with anything there are moments where it misses the mark and that is what I classify as the bad. Now the final point to talk about is the ugly. This is something I see in not only the ISFL but, all the sim leagues I have been a part of and sadly it is something that just does not seem like it can be avoided. This issue is that of hatred or animosity creeping its way into public spaces and causing members to feel under attack. It is something that will always make me sick to my stomach to see and there are definitely more than a couple of instances that come to my mind when I think back at all my time here. These 3 things outline why the community engagement aspect is something that interests me so much about this league. There are so many things that you can focus on and you can spend a lot longer than 600 words talking about it but, for this task I do not have too. Overall, this league is a great place. i would not have come back if I did not think that! Looking forward to many seasons to come!

15. Going to Disney World! Who was the Ultimus or Ultimini Game MVP? Give us a rundown of their celebratory trip to Disney World. (+2.5 tpe)

I’m going to go a little unorthodox here and say that the Ultimus Game MVP belongs to the whole of the Arizona Defense. They had many great players show up on the stat sheet (and if I had to give it to one of them, it would certainly be Mark Goodhead, posting a line of 7 tackles, 6 passes defended, 2 interceptions, and 1 defensive touchdown) but at the end of the day, the whole defense rallied to deliver this game to Arizona. This Sarasota team had an absolutely insane offense this year which pushed them into the 1 seed in the NSFC playoffs, averaging 28.5 points per game, 402 yards per game, 108 rushing yards per game, and 293 passing yards per game. For the record, that’s the 2nd best scoring offense in the league and the best offense by total yardage in the league. Arizona held them to only 11 points in the game and was able to shut down QB Carter Knight allowing only 1 touchdown from him and picking him off twice.

19. If your player had a show starring them, what would the plot be? (+2.5 tpe)

I think a good show for Willier Miller would be “The Pigl Rancher: Starring Willier Miller”. The show would put on display the glorious and glamorous lifestyle of pigl ranchers for the whole world to enjoy. See, many people think that pigls are a lot like pigs, but the letters in the name are where the similarities stop. Pigls, unlike pigs, are not made for the purpose of human consumption but rather as more of a religious icon. A pigl’s breed is not determined by it’s parents but rather by the all knowing pigl in the sky. There are over 50 different pigls that are possible to be born as into this world, some of them ranking higher on the tier list than others. The job of the pigl rancher is to show all pigls love, even the most common of pigls. Some ranchers are lucky enough to have the rarest pigls born into their flock which are sent on the the high temple to be worshipped by all. Pigl is love. Pigl is life.

22. You’re in charge of entertainment for the Ultimus or Ultimini half-time show. What would you do? (+2.5 tpe)

For the ultimus halftime show, I would bring out my collection of pigls and display them to the world. Pigls do not really do much, the entertainment is in watching them and admiring them. To be able to show the world the power of the pigls has been a dream of mine for quite some time, and this would allow the pigl cult to grow exponentially, giving it the exposure that it truly deserves. See, many people think that pigls are dumb or that pigls are a waste of time. Once they saw all my pigls at the halftime show hanging out and grazing around, looking majestic all the while, I think their view would change and they would come to appreciate the pigls as we have. If anyone had any questions about pigls I would host a q&a after the ultimus, on the sidewalk, since that seems like the most inclusive place to hold it. There would be no ticket needed for entry to this, as the pigls are open to everyone.

If you were to ask any of the old guard in OCO which team is the Otters' biggest rival, we would probably all yell back in unison "NOLA SUX!" I'm not entirely sure how this sentiment got started or if it is even reciprocated by New Orleans, but I do know that if we happened to beat NOLA twice in a season, it was a good season regardless of our record. For me, the rivalry with the Second Line started when I was a fresh youngin' in the league. I was brand new in the league and got called up immediately after getting drafted. I wanted to get involved in the war room, so I dove into sim testing. I quickly found out that NOLA was an extremely difficult team to beat. Not because we didn't test well against them - we always found a plan that seemed to work - but we just couldn't get it done on the field. During my first three seasons in the league, we lost 5 straight games against them. Not much of a rivalry at that point but this is how I developed my hatred for the team from the bayou. Since then, we have developed a nice competition between the two teams. In the last 10 seasons, each team has won 10 games and lost 10 games. The Otters scored 485 points while the Second Line scored 487 points. Pretty much dead even between the two. Both teams have made the playoffs twice. 3 of the 6 times a sweep happened, that team made the playoffs. Only once had a team split the series and made the playoffs (Nola this most recent season) and neither team has been swept by the other and made the playoffs. To me that just shows how important it is to win these games and how important of a rivalry it is.

6. Write 600 words or more on something about anything in the league that interests you. It could be related to statistics, a league issue that you take seriously, or a niche part of history that doesn’t fit neatly into either of the above categories. This must be directly related to the league, so don’t wax 600 words about your team’s participation on a Werewolf server or something.

As an offensive linemen, what we want are pancakes. Nothing makes us happier than going full speed and seeing the fear in the eye of an inferior opponent as you smash them into he ground. You want to make them one with the ground. So I was curious as to what the superior offensive linemen builds look like compared to others. Especially looking at the DSFL where there is an even playing field for all of the linemen that are maxed out at 250 TPE. There are different stats that can be upgraded for offensive linemen. The stats that are updated are: strength, pass block, run block, hands, endurance, speed, and agility. and there are different archetypes: athletic, mauler, and balanced.

I’ll look at the different archetypes and the stats they allow. And then I’ll look at the top offensive linemen in the league to see if there are themes to what makes the best build. The different archetypes allow for different stats maxes which can make a difference. I’ll show them in order athletic, balanced and mauler.

This are the 7 main stats that make the build of an offensive linemen. As you can see, the different archetypes allow for better or worse stats, compared to the others, based on the type of “build” that player would have. A mauler usually being a bigger guy, stronger but slower compared to an athletic linemen. And then balanced being the middle ground. I believe a successful offensive line requires a mix of all three. Usually you would expect to have the Left Tackle and Right Tackle to be more of the athletic type. These guys will be lining up against edge rushers, whether that’s a defensive end of a outside line backer. The defensive players are usually quicker than interior defensive linemen, so athletic linemen are needed. Your guard are usually more of a balanced typed, or maybe leaning slightly one way or another. It can depend on what type of offense you run. If you need quick pulling guards or run plays or play action, you may lean towards a athletic, balance build. If you are pass heavy and need time in the pocket, maybe a balanced build with more mauler qualities would be good. Center can be the same way, but going up against some bigger nose tackles or defensive tackles, more of a mauler build could be good. I think every team needs to evaluate what type of offensive scheme you want to run and determine what would be the best build. It could make a difference. Having a whole line of athletic build types, may not be as successful in a pass heavy offense. Same goes for a stretch, play action type of offense. It would be harder to have a bunch of maulers trying to stretch the line or pull for blocks.

So, there are a lot of different combinations of archetypes and stats in the DSFL and the ISFL, so are there themes to what makes a good linemen? Let’s see.
Themes noticed:

1. When looking at the most pancakes, in the DSFL, 9 of the top 10 we offensive tackles. The 1 non tackle was a guard. In the ISFL, 7 of the top 10 were tackles. 2 guards and 1 center round out the top 10. Take away, tackles seem to create more pancakes than the other positions.
2. Looking at linemen with 0 sacks allowed, but filtered by most pancakes, in the DSFL, only 4 of the top 10 were tackles, which is interesting when comparing to the positions with the most pancakes. In the ISFL, only 1 tackle made the top 10. Center and guards made up the rest of the top 10.
Tackles seem to make the most pancakes, but that seems to come with giving up more sacks. The interior linemen seem to be more reliable when it comes to giving up sacks.

3. In the DSFL, having 80 strength and 60 hands, seems to be the important combo for 80+ pancakes. Over the last 3 seasons, players who had that combo had 80+ pancakes. 80 strength and 50 hands seems to get about 60-70 pancakes. There is clearly a link with those 2 stats. This seems to true for the tackles at are ranking in the top 10.
4. When looking at players who gave up 0 sacks, then filter on the most pancakes, a combination of 80+ strength and 70+ on pass and run blocking seemed to get better than average pancakes and giving up 0 sacks

All in all, there are definitely archetypes and stats builds to make depending on what type of offensive linemen you want to be.

13. Expansion Expansion Expansion! Tell us why you think the league should expand / not expand or include any ideas (in words) for team branding ideas you have or team locations.



Je crois qu’il faut abosluments avoir une expansion. Ma raison est qu’il n’y a pas d’équipe situé au Québec et le Québec est vraiment important pour moi.

Mon idée d’expension est une équipe situé au Canada. Je voudrais que l’équipe soit situé de façon plus précise dans la ville de Montréal au Québec.  Le nom d’équipe que je choisirais est l’Hydro du Québec. L’équipe serait nommé après quelque chose qui me rend très fier de mon Québec natale.  En effet la province utilise exclusivement de l’énergie hydro électrique renouvelable. Le gouvernement a pris la décision de nationaliser l’hydro électricité dans les années 70 et ce fut une des meilleurs décisions possible. Les couleurs de l’équipe serait le Bleu et le jaune. Le bleu représente  à la fois l’eau nécessaire à la génération d’électricité et c’est aussi la couleur nationale du Québec. Le jaune réprésente l’électricité.  L’équipe appartiendrait à la province et ainsi ne devrait pas obligatoirement généré des profits.  Ainsi il serait possible de situé le stade de l’Hydro au pied d’un barrage dans le nord québécois.  Le stade serait à côté d’une rivière et en plein milieu d’un forêt. Cela serait un véritable affront à la nature.  Le logo de l’équipe serait une éclaire afin de réprésenter l’hydro électricité. La mascote serait un barrage avec un tête, des bras et des jambes. Elle serait nommée Hydrolouis.  Il n’y aurait pas de spectable de la mi-temps au stade de l’hydro du Québec. Le gouvernement utiliserait le temps afin d’enseigner les bienfaits de l’énergie propre aux spectateurs.  Puisque l’équipe serait situé au Québec alors la totalité de leur communication serait en français et la direction générale de l’équipe esseyerait de repêcher le plus de joueurs québécois possible. 

Une autre équipe que j’aimerais voir apparaitre dans la ISFL est les Raptors de Boise.  Boise est une ville magnifique et les raptors sont intimidants.

19. Written Option: If your player had a show starring them, what would the plot be?

Après sa carrière Louis Blondin aimerait être une star du cinéma. Il voudrait être le prochain Dwayne The Rock Johhson. Ainsi Louis se servirait de son émission de télévision afin de propulser sa carrière cinématographique. L’émission se déroulerait en Égypte antique. Louis serait le dernier roi des acadiens.  Il menerait une imposante armée. Le pouvoir spécaile de Louis serait sa capacité à se transformer en scorpion. Cela lui assurerait l’obéissance ablsolue de ses troupes. La première saison de la séries se concentrait sur l’enfance du roi scorpion et la façon dont il a acquis ses pouvoirs. La deuxième saison serait à propos de son ascension au pouvoir et les manigances politques qu’il a du utililiser. La troisième et dernière saison serait dans le présent. On suivrait une équipe d’archéologue qui découvrer la chute de l’empire des Acadiens. L’acteur principale serait Brandon Fraser et dans le dernier épisode de la série , il réveillerait le roi scorpion.

2. The S34 draft class was a pretty shallow class. But just like every draft class in league history, it has some superstars, some busts, some reaches, and some draft values. First overall pick Theo Lariat went to the Philadelphia Liberty to play cornerback for them. Unfortunately, he never really developed as a strong cornerback two behind their fantastic but aging corner, Willie Miller. He has been serviceable as a  slot corner but never developed into the shutdown outside corner Philly wanted. The second pick of the draft was also a cornerback, Simon the Frog to the Yellowknife Wraiths. He has panned out better than Lariat but has not had incredible statistical numbers. He has, however, been a piece of a fantastic Wraiths defense for several seasons. The third pick, Louis Blondin of the Sabercats, looks poised to break out next season. He has been a second or even third option in the passing game behind Higgins and star tight end Deshawn Penne, but has passed the aging Higgins on the depth chart and could be the number one pass catcher for the team this season. At pick four, the New Orleans Second Line took Ganyu, a linebacker. He has been stellar so far in his career, and just keeps getting better. Rounding out the top 5 is Michaelangelo McTurtle, a running back for the New York Silverbacks. He has turned into one of the best running backs in the league and could potentially be on track for the Hall of Fame given how good he has been early on in his career. Zayne Dangle, a wide receiver for Berlin came next. He might be the best wide receiver in this entire draft class. Next, Colorado took Nathan Explosion, a defensive end. He has not had great stats, with just 1 sack last season, but as a rotational piece on the defensive line he has been good enough.

Some of the big draft steals have been second round general manager picks. Spottie Dopalicious has been a good corner for Arizona. Russet Buster has played well at safety for San Jose, as has Cross Eriksen for the Colorado Yeti. Easily the steal of the draft, though, has been safety Chim Rickles. Taken way down at the beginning of the third round, Rickles has more TPE than many of the first rounders, and he probably has the most individual accolades of any player in the class. Rickles already has multiple All-Pro selections at safety early on in his career. He has had back to back season with at least five interceptions. He also has two defensive touchodwns. If I had to pick one player from this class to make the Hall of Fame only three or four seasons into their careers, I would have to pick Rickles.

Another great player in this class is my own player, quarterback Elessar Jones. He has been one of the best dual threats in the league, rushing for over 1100 yards through his first two seasons. He has helped turn around the fortunes of the New Orleans Second Line, and helped them contend for the playoffs. He has been an efficient passer and has generally avoided throwing interceptions compared to other young signal callers. The team built around him gives Elessar a chance to be one of the best players in this draft class when all is said and done. He has a great running back in the Stig, and multiple great receivers. Ttollem Mada, Don Dobbler, and Rockbo Rockbot give Jones a deadly trio of receivers to throw to which should allow Jones to have a ton of success going forward. Add in two excellent offensive tackles and an amazing defense and Jones could win a few rings, putting him in Hall of Fame contention.
