Draft is done, no games are played, sounds like the right time for hottakes and power rankings.
1. Arizona Outlaws ?0
Kckolbe put it best, when your roster is that complete, you can afford to reach. After grabbing Godfrey King, the team just looked to up their roster in terms of the strongest player they wanted at the position they wanted. Did they reach for some players? Absolutely, but with the roster they have, they can afford to do that.
2. Orange County Otters ?0
The otters found themselves with options and killed it in the draft, they fixed their holes with active players and are looking to be the dominant force they were in the second half of s2. Can they do it? They found replacements for the losses with O’Sullivan and Burnsman while also updating their roster. A big red flag for this draft was a lot of replacing with little improving, with the exception of Boom, but we shall see what happens.
3. Colorado Yeti ?0
The Yeti looked at their roster, said offensive line was our biggest issue, and dug in deep. The one head scratching moment is when they traded up to grab their offensive lineman. Even if they were right and Sandoval was taken before their pick, had they not traded up, the team still had other viable options to pick from at the draft. Yes Sandoval is great, and their new GM, but there were other great options for the line position.
4. Baltimore Hawks ?+1
The Hawks drafted really smart, but the one question is, will it be enough to take the focus of defenses off Farlane? Trey Willie instantly bolsters the team’s offensive options, but it looks like Kyubee is here to stay, and no one is really sure that he is the answer. I think Pierno or Strike might have been a smart pickup for the team, but with the DSFL looking to cultivate Quarterbacks for the future, maybe they’re looking at a long term plan.
5. Philadelphia Liberty. ?-1
This is a bold statement. Last year’s draft was better for the Liberty. However, they played smart, drafted smart, and got a lot of great talent. They were able to supplement their talent while at the same time, grab both Browning and Rove, and while the battle is Rove’s to lose, Browning may be a DSFL star if he fails to supplant the 2nd round quarterback. However, outside of Rove and Browning, the draftees seems to bring a work ethic problem with them, although Milan and Kamaka may prove doubters wrong yet.
6. Yellowknife Wraiths ?0
I don’t hate any of the Wraiths draftees, they went defense in the start with a bunch of active players and then kept focusing on activity as the draft continued in the night. I love the late @ralz9 pick, an active player in a position that they are strong in who has a bit of a graphics itch coupled with an active locker room presence and a passion for writing articles? I’m getting déjà vu. The draft was great, so why have the Wraiths at 6? Well, the team still has some questions at defense and the offense did sputter, last season which is something they need to look into. It’s not to say the Wraiths are bad, the gap between 3 and 6 is much smaller than the gap between 6 and 7.
7. San Jose SaberCats ?+1
You ever watch a game and see a play and go “and that’s the game” before the final whistle? For me that play in the playoffs happened in the Outlaws-Otters game. Deep in their own territory and up by 4, the Outlaws decide to punt on fourth down. Ronaldo comes in and sails it 60-something yards down the field, the Otters now have to drive heavily to come back while short on time. To anyone hating on the Blewitt pick, it’s not just a kicker, it’s a kicker punter combo, and Blewitt was the right call. Bailey was also top of our draft board, and for good reason, the Cats need active players if they want to stay competitive and both are. Couple it with the pickups of Cake in the 3rd and the now alive LB @nijomemo and you have now started giving quite a pair of fangs to this sabercats defense.
8. Las Vegas Legion ?-1
Well, the Legion may have scored on the draft picks using them on contacts they have in other simulation leagues? Will it pan out? Maybe, but it’s going to the Legion a while to catch up to the rest of the league, but they’re done trading picks for players and are starting to look toward the future.
Please send my buddy @ckroyal92 the first 1mil from this. I’ll take the rest.
