Booter McGavin finally was made available for media today after San Jose's practice. McGavin had not been seen by members of the media since his stop into Pullman WA to visit with Washington State coach Gardner Minshew. Both men were seen leaving Pullman together and the neither were seen again until early last week.
When we entered the locker room to talk to Booter, we found him sitting on the floor cross legged with a beat up paper back book in his hands. That book was none other than Henry David Thoreau's "Walden". He put down the book, smiled at the media and said go ahead and ask what you need.
He was first pressed on where he and Minshew headed and why they were gone for nearly 3 weeks. McGavin replied "That's a simple answer, me and Gardner were in a log cabin together in the woods of Oregon. Both of us are good friends and needed time to decompress after the season away from all the media attention."
Booter elaborated that he and Gardner went to the cabin in the woods because it had no electricity and let them disconnect and also live a simpler life. "You know we had to manage everything for ourselves. Every night if we wanted to have light that meant we had to cut some fire wood. So you know we would be out there, shirts off, chopping that wood together to make sure we had heat for the night. You know some really manly man shit." Booter added that the two also hunted and fished together to provide their meals for the three week trip. "We were totally self sufficient and it was a wonderful journey".
Asked if he felt ready for the current ISFL season Booter said he was more ready than ever. "Out in the cabin I learned that I I have the strongest legs in the world and their is no need to keep building on that perfection. So I needed to find a new muscle to work out and that is simply my brain." I asked Booter how he intended to work out his brain and he simply pointed down to the copy of "Walden" on the floor.
"I am starting to read some of the great American literature. Gardner gave me that book when we out in the woods and man it has opened my mind. Normally I only read those books that have pictures but I see now that more words can be good too. And this transcendentalism stuff is super interesting and really speaks to you when you are out in nature." I'm not sure what it all means right now but I will figure it out."
Asked if he had a list of books he wanted to read Booter mentioned that he is still getting through Walden but "After I finish this one I have a whole list my high school english teacher sent me. I think I have the Great Dick or Moby-Gatsby or something coming next." Clearly Booter still has a way to go in his "building his brain" journey but it is admirable to see the young man take an interest in literature.
As for the season Booter says he is ready to help the San Jose Sabercats win. "Simple man we want to win it all and I still think I am the best kicker and punter in this league. We are going to go out there as a team and win this season. I believe in the guys in the locker room and they believe in me. Just need to execute what the coaches say and we can put it together."
Overall this strange trip to the cabin in the Oregon woods seems to have produced a new and Improve Booter Mcgavin. He seems to have really matured and is ready for the season. Will this continue into the future, who knows? But San Jose should be ready to embrace this new personality and ride one of the better legs in the league to some success.
