Alright so for my rookie article I'm going to look at a brief summary of each of the DSFL teams and their performance in the season just gone. I was a trade deadline pickup by London but I am still getting my head around the league and the different teams so I will be mainly using the index for this. Therefore I'm sorry if I get anything drastically wrong.
Dallas Birddogs - 2-11-1 4th in the South
Merchant told me the Birddogs were struggling this season before I even joined the league but I thought he was just exaggerating, unfortunately for Dallas he was not. The defense struggled big time but that can be expected for a team with as many bots and rookies taking the field as Dallas had. A real bright spot was the play of Wolfie McDummy Jr, he led the Dallas passing attack that ranked as the 4th best in the DSFL which is at least in the top half. McDummy Jr could look to improve the completion percentage of 53% but the 2.6 TD/INT ratio shows the he certainly possess the potential to be a strong QB. It was also his first season at QB so you would only expect his performance to get better in the coming seasons as Dallas can surround him with more and more weapons.
The rushing attack was woeful this season with less than 100 yards per game and ranking dead last in the DSFL. However there was signs of hope including the late season upset of Portland that saw Ace Anderson carry the load with 118 yards rushing along with two tudders. Anderson is a rookie so you would expect a big uptick in production for next season.
Overall I think Dallas definitely has a route back to the top and while the team was poor this season we can expect them to be better next season.
Norfolk Seawolves 5-9 3rd in the South
Norfolk's calling card this season was definitely their defense. They ranked in the top half of the league in the key defensive categories, including being in the top 2 of yards allowed per game. Certainly looks like they were led by the linebacker duo of Federico Americano and Terry Johnson.
Johnson in particular was a standout notching 119 Tackles and 15 Tackles for Loss both ranking second in the DSFL. Quandale Dingle had a strong season with 6 picks from the Free Safety position and this was complimented by Legs McMillon who had 4 from his Corner Back spot.
Their offense definitely struggled, ranking last in points per game and second last in yards per game. The rushing attack did rank in the top half of the league however, Sailor Moon in their first season in the DSFL did have more than 750 yards at an average of close to 5 yards per carry. Which was tied for the best amongst league Running Backs.
Tough season for the Seawolves whose season could have been different had a couple of one score games gone their way.
Bondi Beach Buccaneers 6-8 2nd in the South, 1st round playoff exit
Bit of an oddity with 3 of the 4 South teams finishing below .500 while the North had each team at or above .500. Bondi had an absolute roller-coaster of a season starting 0-5 before finishing 6-3 the rest of the ways and losing to eventual champions Tijuana in the playoffs. The Bucs offense is an interesting tale, finishing top 3 in yards per game but being in the bottom half of the league in points per game. BBB had a 1,000 yard rusher (Malik Brooks) and two 1,000 yard receivers (Lucas Stevenson and Burnt Toast) which points to how strong the offense was but they just couldn't get the points on the board.
One issue was the turnover factor for BBB, they led the league in interceptions thrown and they also had a fair share of fumbles from different receiving options.
The Bucs defense was one of the better ones in the DSFL, ranking in the top half of the league in both points and yards allowed. BBB were also the second best team when facing the run in Season 41. This was definitely led by the duo on the Defensive Line of Scruffy the Janitor and Rolud Onyxgut, Onyxgut in particular was a strong performer with 42 Tackles and 7 sacks. Another stand out player was Myrtle Beach Tolliver who had 90+ Tackles including 11 for a loss and one fumble forced from his linebacker position.
Portland Pythons 7-7 4th in the North
Just as I mentioned in the Bucs recap the Pythons had a better record than three teams but still finished last in their division. The Pythons were certainly a team that struggled offensively, one of only two teams (Norfolk Seawolves being the other team) that averaged less than 20 points per game. Their defense also wasn't much to write home about, finishing in the bottom half of the league in every metric except their pass defense which ranked 4th in the DSFL. What led to their 7-7 record was the Pythons ability to clutch up in close games, 6 of their 7 wins were by one score or less.
Their QB, Donovan Winters III wasn't the most prolific passer in the league but he was the most efficient. He completed passes at a 66.7 percent clip which ranked as the best mark in the DSFL. Rookie Eldroh Kove was the standout performer on the Pythons offense, he led the league in rushing yards with just under 1,500 yards and added 8 touchdowns to the impressive stat line from the rookie.
One standout of the Portland defense was Jumbo Edward, the second year Defensive Tackle led his position in sacks with 11. Benjamin Duvernay was another member of the defense that stood out, the second year cornerback ranked second in the DSFL for passes defended. He totalled 22 passes defended but could only manage the solitary interception on the season. The record perhaps flatters Portland's season but either way it's something that the snakes can build off of.
Minnesota Grey Ducks - 8-6 3rd in the North
The Grey Ducks missed the playoffs due to losing the tiebreaker with London who beat them twice during the season. It was an interesting season for the Ducks, they beat both Ultimini participants and put a whooping on the Pythons in Week 8 when they won 62-9. They also won their last 4 but ultimately the damage was done with their losses to the Royals earlier in the season.
As you could tell by the fact they posted 62 points on the Pythons, the Ducks calling card was their offense. They led the league with nearly 29 points per game, the offense was led by the rookie QB Zisia Ojeisndiwoseodj. They had the second most passing TD's in the league, their favourite target was third year wide out Branden Rojas. Rojas had 81 catches for 1,226 yards and a league leading 12 receiving touchdowns.
The Minnesota defense wasn't a bunch of slouches either, in particular they had a top 3 rushing defense in the DSFL. The defensive unit was led by linebacker King Dedede, he had 117 Tackles (3rd in the league) and 12 sacks (2nd in the league). On the backend Chaos Vert was 2nd in the league with 6 interceptions, a solid statline from the rookie Corner Back.
London Royals 8-6 2nd in the North, 1st round playoff exit
Firstly big shoutout to everyone in that Royals LR, they helped me get settled into the league and feel comfortable. They answered all my dumb questions and helped me with my build - much love, I'll always root for London a little bit deep down if I don't end up being drafted there.
London had one of the best offenses in the DSFL and in particular the best passing offense. Taking nothing away from Martin Bachman's performance on the ground but the team's offensive MVP was Josh Patterson. The rookie QB had nearly a 3 to 1 TD/INT ratio as he led the league with 37 TD's through the air. Benefiting from the rookie gunslinger's season was Don Tollibeo and Mike Ehrmantraut who finished with the most and 3rd most receiving yards respectively. Patterson also ensured to spread the love with his TD's both of his top two options finished with 11 receiving TD's.
As good as Patterson was on offense, he was matched on defense by Max Honestly. Honestly was the league leader in Tackles and Tackles for Loss, he also added 11 sacks to those totals which ranked third in the DSFL. Honestly was a bright spot on a defense that struggled across the majority of the season. The defense gave up the 2nd most points in the league, and was gashed by the pass all season long. This was evident in the playoffs when the Coyotes posted 41 points on the Royals defense which included 5 passing touchdowns.
Kansas City Coyotes 11-3 1st in the North Ultimini Runner Up
Kansas City fell short in the final game of the season, but that shouldn't take the shine off what was an extremely strong season. A strong offense that is built around the run coupled with a stifling defense that was top of the pop in both points per game allowed and yards per game allowed.
The offense was led by dual threat QB Jake Jefferson, he had 29 passing touchdowns which was accompanied by another 5 touchdowns on the ground. The rushing attack was a monster with Jefferson accompanying Heiiajs D. Owidhuse and Jason West, the trio would lead the league with 2,145 total yards gained on the ground - more than 220 yards more than the next team
The defense was led primarily by rookie linebacker Aleksander Kovic, he posted over 100 Tackles and led the DSFL with 13 sacks. Overall it was a strong team effort by the Coyotes on defense, chipping in on the backend was Matthew Fryars who would lead the league in interceptions as he posted seven over the season for Kansas City.
Tijuana Luchadores 8-5-1 1st in the South Ultimini Champions
Finally we get to the team who reached the precipice that all teams were searching for. Tijuana like Kansas City was a strong all round team, with a top three offense and a top two defense. Quarterback Lloyd Bannings overcame throwing the equal most interceptions in the league to lead the team to the championship.
The rushing attack was a two headed monster that was the most dominant outside of the Coyotes. Gucci Gurley and Kyle Crane were the two leaders for the team South of the border, both had over 850 yards on the season but it was Gurley that was finding paydirt. He ended up with 11 TD's in comparison to Crane who only had the three touchdowns over the course of the season. Gurley's 11 touchdowns was good enough for the second most in the DSFL this season.
On defense the linebacker duo of Ligjammed McBobface and Ryan Knock led the way. They combined for over 200 tackles, 24 tackles for a loss and 19 sacks. While these two were the dominant forces in the front seven it was Synystyr Gates that was making plays in the secondary. Gates had 70 tackles which was accompanied by a league leading 7 interceptions.
The Luchadores defense showed up big time in the Ultimini, keeping the high powered Coyotes offense to 17 points. This included keeping the vaunted Kansas City rushing attack to 3.3 yards per rush.
So there you have it my recap of the DSFL, I'm sure I've missed some key players but I had fun getting to know some names of players that had been dominating this season.
I'm looking forward to the draft and finding out where I will play moving forward, my favourite part of any sim league is the scouting conversations. So far I've talked to a few of the DSFL teams and I've really been enjoying my time.
I can't promise to be a max earner but I can promise that I'll try to be active within the locker room and give my best to whichever team drafts me.
