Hello, and welcome, to another Sean media post. Today, we will be taking a look at the last 10 Ultimus winners and what position/positions they had that stood out from others TPE wise. It will likely be more primarily focused on which side of the ball won them the Ultimus that season. We will then use this to try to determine which S43 ISFL team has the best shot at winning the Ultimus. So without further ado, let’s get into it.
S32 Ultimus
WINNER: New York Silverbacks
The New York Silverbacks went 10-6 in S32 and made an unexpected run to the Ultimus. They had to go through the 2 best teams in the ASFC on the road to get to the Ultimus where they faced the Berlin Fire Salamanders. Berlin was also a good team but NY edges them out and took home the trophy. So let’s see which positions on this S32 NYS team stood out from others. The offense was led by QB Sam Howitzer who had an astonishing year. Also RB’s Brandon Prince, and Buster Bawlls both played a huge role in the team’s success. WR Tugg Speedman was Howitzer’s main target that season and didn’t disappoint. The defense was very good but the offense was just great. It is safe to say that the Silverbacks S32 Ultimus run was because of the electric passing of Sam Howitzer plus lots of help from his RBs and WRs.
S33 Ultimus
WINNER: Baltimore Hawks
The Baltimore Hawks took home the S33 Ultimus by defeating the Orange County Otters in a very high scoring 41-38 win. Now, by just looking at the score of this game, you can tell the Hawks have a booming offense. And allowing 38 points doesn’t look good. Well yes, they have exactly that. A maxed out QB, 2 maxed out RBs, and 2 maxed out WRs. Woah. Scary. Oh and I forgot to mention they also have a maxed out TE. Although this offense was one of a kind, the defense certainly wasn’t. But this is a prime example of why I’m writing this article. It’s more so which side of the ball wins you an Ultimus in the ISFL. Not really one position. They had a few maxed out players on defense but it was nothing compared to their offense. Once again, it is safe to say the offense is the main reason the Hawks won the S32 Ultimus.
S34 Ultimus
WINNER: Chicago Butchers
The Butchers went 12-3-1 in the regular season in S34 and surprising lots of people by doing so. They then went right through the ASFC and made their way to the Ultimus. They were matched up against the Honolulu Hahalua who had one of the best D lines in the entire ISFL. Along with a staggering offense led by maxed out QB Dexter Zaylren. The Butchers beat the Hahalua 33-27 in a thrilling game. When you look at the Butchers S34 roster, you don’t see many maxed out players. But if I had to choose offense or defense, I would go offense. A nearly maxed out QB then behind him he has a maxed out RB. 1 maxed out WR then 2 nearly maxed out ones. QB (Oles Jr) had many weapons at his disposal to take down a team like the Hahalua. I think this team was more offfense oriented but it still had a very good defense. Again, if I had to choose one, it would be offense. I’m sure we will see some more defense oriented teams soon but offensive teams have so far proven to be the most effective in winning an Ultimus.
S35 Ultimus
WINNER: Honolulu Hahalua
The Hahalua went right back to the Ultimus in S35, and this time, they won it. QB Zaylren once again led the squad to the promise land. 13-3 record going into the playoffs and they showed no signs of stopping. They cruised through the wild card then took out Arizona in the CC game. They then advanced to the Ultimus where they beat the Baltimore Hawks 24-13. Now this one was more low scoring than others we have seen so far. The defense allowed just 13 points. Let’s see what they had. They had 2 maxed out corners plus two maxed out players on the D line. Along with a maxed out safety. This team definitely did not allow any big passing plays because of the talent at safety and cornerback. You would also think they didn’t allow much from the run game because of the stud D line. The only weak spot in this defense is the linebackers. None of whom were maxed out. The offense consisted of a maxed out QB, a maxed out RB, and a near perfect WR group. Something that I have noticed so far from all these Ultimus winners are the WR cores. Every single one of them had very high earning for all 3 WRs. If this trend continues, it will absolutely be mentioned towards the end. I also made an article about each teams WRs and how they contribute to winning. It will be linked at the bottom of this article. Anyways, what was the reason the Hahalua won? I’m going to have to go with the stellar offense once again because of the talent at literally every position except TE. Yes, they had a maxed out O linemen. This offense excelled above other teams and that’s why they won the Ultimus. I will say the defense is very very good but if I had to choose it would be offense.
S36 Ultimus
WINNER: Honolulu Hahalua
Once again, the Hahalua won the Ultimus. They beat the Sarasota Sailfish in the Ultimus 31-28 in a thriller of a game. The Hahalua roster wasn’t much different this season besides adding a rookie WR Mai-Heinous. They still had maxed out QB Dexter Zaylren and maxed out RB Buffalo Hunter. The defense was also very similar to the prior season, maybe even better. Now, it did allow 28 points in the S36 Ultimus but it was very very solid all season. In the playoffs, it was all offense for the Hahalua and because the made it to the Ultimus and won with basically the same exact roster as the year prior, I’m giving it to the offense again. More specifically QB sensation Dexter Zaylren.
S37 Ultimus
WINNER: Arizona Outlaws
The Outlaws absolutely obliterated all competition in the playoffs lol and made it to the Ultimus where they really sucked the life out of the Sailfsih who had now lost 2 Ultimus’ in a row. The final score was 31-11. Through the entire playoff run, the defense allowed 13.3 points per game. Wow. Maybe we will finally have a more defense oriented Ultimus winner. Yes, we do. The whole team didn’t have that many players maxed out for a matter of fact. But they did have some sort of talent at almost every position. Jay Cue Jr led the RBs and up and coming QB Wendall Sailor controlled the passing game. WR Kotoni Staggs was his main target that season. They had two maxed out CBs and 1 maxed out SS and 1 maxed out DT. This provided an all around powerhouse of a team that no one could stop. They made it clear they were going to pound the run game and if that didn’t work, they have insane receivers and a very very good QB. They also made it very clear that you COULD NOT throw the ball against them. Although the offense was truly one of a kind, I am going to give this one to the defense for its performance in the playoffs which led the Outlaws to an easy S37 Ultimus victory.
S38 Ultimus
WINNER: Arizona Outlaws
The Outlaws win back2back Ultimus’ behind mostly the offense this time. When you look at the roster, it seems like the defense actually got worse. Yes it did. That also translated to the field as the Outlaws had a very tough time in the playoffs where the offense had to really work. Sailor, Cue, and Staggs once again lead that offense and that is how they won. I am giving it to the offense this time and more specifically, Jay Cue Jr, the RB.
S39 Ultimus
WINNER: Yellowknife Wraiths
The Wraiths obliterated the Outlaws in the Ultimus who were looking to 3peat. A very lopsided 34-6 win shows how dominant the defense was. But wait a second. Let’s look at the other two playoff games they played. 27 points allowed and 21 points allowed. And, well, the offense… they put up 45 and 48 points. Plus the 34 in the Ultimus. Now let’s look at the rosters. At first glance, I can already see what carried the offense. Two maxed out RBs. Yep. Two maxed out running backs. Now, they did have an almost maxed out QB but it wasn’t the reason they won. They had the best O line in the league BY FAR. Not a single maxed out WR tho. It was clearly the run game that brought the Wraiths to the promise land. Now the defense. 2 maxed out CBs, 1 maxed out LB plus two near maxed out LBs, a maxed out DE, plus two nearly maxed out safeties. Yeah I think I’m going to go with the defense here as it clearly has a ton of talent. The Yellowknife run game was very very good but that’s about it. The defense in Yellowknife that season was truly built different.
S40 Ultimus
WINNER: Arizona Outlaws
Lol this Outlaws team was just different. Like you just need to look at the roster and you will be able to see that they are completely unstoppable. They went 14-2 (geez) in the regular season then cruises right through the playoffs to face the Wraiths once again. Now this Ultimus was the first one I ever watched because I was in the DSFL at the time getting ready for the ISFL draft. It was held in Las Vegas and at the time, I was under the impression that these two teams were “the teams” at the time. I still believe that to this day that those teams were the dominant ones at the time. Yeah well the Outlaws got their revenge from S39 and blew out the Wraiths 45-21. I don’t even want to go through this roster because of how many players are maxed out. Two maxed out RBs, two maxed out WRs, a very above average o line, and a nearly maxed QB Wendell Sailor. Now the defense (get ready), all 3 CBs maxed out, a maxed out linebacker plus two nearly maxed out linebackers, and a maxed out D linemen. The only bad part about this team was the safeties as none were very close to max earning. If I had to choose a position or side of the ball, I would have to go with the offense tho as it had two maxed out backs plus two maxed out recievers for Sailor to throw to. That’s scary and that’s why they would score so many damn points. They also didn’t allow many because they had easily the best corner back group in the league and one of the best LB groups in the league. The S40 Arizona Outlaws were the definition of an unbeatable team.
S41 Ultimus:
WINNER: Cape Town Crash
Ah yes, now we get into the more recent Ultimus’. The Cape Town Crash went 13-3 and trotted all the way to the S41 Ultimus where they dismantled the Arizona Outlaws who ONCE AGAIN made it to the Ultimus. What’s that like 4 seasons in a row now? Talk about a dynasty. Funny thing is they weren’t done. We’ll get to that later but the Crash would defeat the Outlaws just barely 20-18 in a more low scoring game than usual. Or from what we’ve seen at least. But now the roster. How did the Crash beat this Outlaws team? They had the best RB in the league, Jarvis Harbinger-Marjin, and they also had the best tackle in the league, Swantavius Payne. Payne made JHM’s job way easier as this lead to the Crash being able to win the Ultimus. Their WR core was average with no max earners. They clearly were focused on the run game bringing them to the promise land. But the offense wasn’t the reason they won the Ultimus. The defense consisted of 2 maxed out CBs, two maxed out D linemen, and 2 maxed out safeties. This was enough to stop the booming Outlaws offense in the Ultimus and being home the trophy to Cape Town. So I’m giving this one to the defense and more specifically the secondary (CBs and Safeties).
S42 Ultimus
WINNER: Arizona Outlaws
Yes, the Outlaws won another Ultimus. But how Sean, didn’t their players get old? That’s what I thought, but I guess not. See, this time, it was the defense allowing under 20 points in every Outlaws playoff game in S42. They proceeded to absolutely whoop the Fire Salamanders in the Ultimus 38-14. It was clear all season that the Outlaws were the best team. Was it their offense or defense. Let’s see. Two maxed out RBs who get to run behind two maxed out O linemen (very rare). Above average WR core with 1 maxed out. Now the defense. Two maxed out CBs, a maxed out LB plus two near max LBs, a maxed out DT. They actually don’t have a strong safety on their team and their FS’ aren’t great. It was really the front of the defense like the linebackers and then a very very good CB group to back them up. Even though their defense was outstanding in the playoffs, I’m going to have to give it to the offense because of the talent basically everywhere.
You’re not done reading just yet. Now, let’s take a look at which side of the ball I chose for each Ultimus winner
S32: Offense
S33: Offense
S34: Offense
S35: Offense
S36: Offense
S37: Defense
S38: Offense
S39: Defense
S40: Offense
S41: Defense
S42: Offense
Offense clearly won as it had 8 Ultimus winners. Defense had just 3. I believe defense is still very very important tho as every single one of these Ultimus winners had a very very strong defense. And the ones that I did choose defense for, they had a very good offense too. It is pretty obvious that both sides of the ball matter a lot. You aren’t going to win an Ultimus with a bad offense and a good defense or the other way around. But I will say sometimes the offense/defense is better than the other and that will give a team more of a chance to win it all.
Now let’s look at which S43 ISFL teams have the best shot at winning the Ultimus this season based on the past 11 winners rosters. I won’t go through every team because that would take way too long, so I’m just going to go through the rosters right now and type out the ones here that I think could win it.
The Berlin Fire Salamanders have a championship team right now. They are coming off a Ultimus loss and couldn’t be more hungry for a win this time around. 3 maxed out CBs, 2 maxed out RBs, a maxed out WR, and a maxed out tackle. Two maxed out safeties and a maxed out LB plus DT. The LB core is very above average. I think Berlin has the best shot at winning the S43 Ultimus because they have lots of talent at seemingly every position and have the experience from last season to take it all the way. They are likely the biggest Ultimus threat in S43. Another team to look out for is the Baltimore Hawks. The Hawks have 2 great RBs along with the leagues best QB Preston Beatz. They have two maxed receivers plus a very above average defense. The Hawks and Fire Salamanders are both in the NSFC so they won’t see each other in the S43 Ultimus, but they will likely be seen in the NSFC CC game. Let’s look at one more team, but this time, in the ASFC. That team is the Honolulu Hahalua who are fresh off a CC game loss in S42. The Hahalua have many big time earners primarily at QB and RB. This should set them up for a S43 Ultimus run. Octavio Perez is also maxed out WR so he should be a great target for QB Nova Montagne. For the defense, they have a great CB group plus a few good D linemen’s.
Ultimus Prediction:
Honolulu Hahalua vs Berlin Fire Salamanders
WINNER: Berlin Fire Salamanders
I think Berlin should be the best ISFL team this season and win the Ultimus. There are many other good teams out there especially in the ASFC. But with what Berlin has right now, I don’t see anyone beating them. It will be a fun S43 and I can’t wait to see what each and every team will be able to do!
