Contract incentive: @"Bamford13"
Alright, a career deep-dive into Ben Skowronek, a player I had never heard of nor can spell the name of. I don’t know why Bamford is interested in him, but luckily for me, he’s got quite a short career so far.
Bennett William Skowronek was drafted to the Los Angeles Rams in the 7th round (pick 249) of the 2021 draft. Not a number that gives super high promise, but let's look at his draft profile to see what we can expect from this 6’ 3”, 225 pound wide out.
On the NFL.com prospects site, he graded out at 5.86 (Average Backup or Special Teamer), and a 67 on Next Gen Stats. He did get a score of 71 on the Athleticism score (26th of all WRs) but 61 on production (40th). People say he’s highly competitive, with good size (he a big boi) but doesn’t have that elite speed or physical talent to destroy the league. He's comp'd to Robert Tonyan who I barely know as well. Basically a big, physically talented guy who likes to play, but doesn’t have that raw talent to beat the bigger, faster top CBs in the league, but he can pass block and grinds!
Before being traded to the Texans alongside a 7th for a 6th round pick, Skowronek had a total of 575 yards and 1 TD in his three seasons. He played 82% of the snaps in 2022 but only 19% last season, although he did play 71% of the special teams snaps.
Skowronek has 45 games played, starting 12 of them (1 in 2021, 11 in 2022, 0 in 2023). In his rookie season he was 11/20 with 133 yards and 7 first downs, a 12.1 yards/reception. From the numbers it was looking good for him to get time and be trusted, and that would show with 39/61 for 376 yards and 9.6 average in 2022. Skowronek looked like one of those late round picks that showed up with quality and hard work, especially with the Rams missing Cooper Kupp. Skowronek has filled in at FB this past season as well, using his size and effort to make a case for himself. It’s a shame that he dropped a TD in the NFC Champ game and bobbled a ball for an INT in the Super Bowl.
However, with the emergence of Puka Nacua, Skowronek lost his playing time in the starting roster and while putting in the effort, looks to show that he is a real gamer in Texas.
I actually really, really like Skowronek now that I’ve watched some of his clips. He plays hard, makes blocks, and really puts in the work. I think he might fit better in that WR3/FB role, he earns his catches and opens holes for his teammates. I thought Bamford was dumb for liking this guy, but this is the kind of grit and hard work you need for your team to pick up the small, difficult yards that each game comes down to.
I’ve got two clips for you, in the same TwitterThread: https://twitter.com/BrandonThornNFL/stat...8738702336
In the first one he lays out JJ Watt, gets up immediately and runs to the flat to catch an outlet pass for 5 yards as Stafford has pressure in his face.
In this one: https://twitter.com/BrandonThornNFL/stat...4482216961
He’s in a FB and he just does his job, taking out the Will in order for his RB to run it in.
Sure, could Skowronek be faster or look smoother coming into his breaks? Yeah, he can’t handle the speed necessary to properly separate, but he’s big, consistent, wins jump-balls, and will put in a shift. I’m legitimately excited to watch him in Texas now, I think he’ll do a lot of jobs and only True Fans ™ will really love seeing the effort he puts in, without any of the glory.
PS: Can we just talk about how friggin good Stafford is?
