Roy was tired.
The two Prospects Bowls were insanely tiring.
And disappointing…
Oh boy, if they were disappointing…
Roy felt like a deflated balloon. Playing college with the LSU made him think he was much more prepared for the professional game than he actually was. At the prospect bowl, everyone was as good as he was, and some even better. He still felt like he didn’t play fully to his potential, he didn’t showcase his full game, but it was so hard, and he couldn’t get out of his own head.
“And what was that phantom ‘unnecessary roughness’ call? I wasn’t within ten yards of any player, the whole play… What the heck?”
“The refs don’t like me. They’re against me. Will it continue to be like this? Will I even make it to the DSFL? If the scouts are paying attention, surely I’ve slided down the draft rankings…”
His mentor and old High School Coach Nolan had told Roy sometimes refs confuse numbers and call the wrong number, and don’t want to admit they got it wrong, but Roy wasn’t buying it. That ref was totally against Roy, in a personal way.
Roy looked out the window of the Greyhound bus. They were arriving in Kansas City.
Kansas City was full of fountains, and there seemed to be plenty of jazz performers on the street. Some beautiful buildings as well.
The bus stopped. Roy wasn’t here to do sightseeing. He was here to visit the Kansas City Coyotes facilities. The Coyote Stadium. He wanted to visit and learn about every potential team that could draft him to the DSFL, even if eventually only one would pick him.
“If any of them pick me at all” Roy sighed.
The Coyotes were a storied franchise. Reading the wiki on his phone Roy learned that they were created as one of the six original franchises of the DSFL, on the same conference as the Luchadores and the Marshalls. They won the Ultimini three times and lost that Championship Final ten other times. That seemed unimpressive and really unlucky, but they won their conference more than eleven times, so that seemed impressive. Winning the Ultimini is surely hard! Reaching it was hard enough, winning it more so. Specially with all the rotation that developmental teams must have.
Their logo and their uniform were really cool. The uniform was a bit simple, but still solid. The logo on the helmet was especially awesome and made the whole thing really work.
While Roy was contemplating their logo, he noticed MTA was passing by, the Coyotes scout that had interviewed him. MTA seemed like a busy guy, so Roy just gave it a little nod in his direction. MTA nodded back with a smile and went on his way.
Roy took a walk around the Coyotes Stadium, contemplating if this would be his home for the next one to four years, the fact it wasn’t a franchise with a lot of Ultimini wins was positive, it meant Roy could come here and be a legend, a stalwart that helped put the franchise in their winning ways. Then his phone calendar reminded him: it’s time to go to the next stop.
Roy got on the bus and took off to Oregon.
Roy realized he messed up his itinerary, but it was just one more mental mistake and lack of attention to details that had plagued him for the past Prospect Bowl games… “Matters not. I’ll still have time to visit all of them”.
Roy arrived in Portland to visit the Portland Pythons facilities. Namely the Snake Pit Stadium.
According to the wiki that Roy could access on his phone, the Portland Pythons won seven Ultimini Championships, the second most wins. Wow, that seemed impressive! Even more impressive knowing they reached the final twelve other times and lost the big game. That was incredible. Looking at those stats and then back at the Snake Pit Stadium, Roy felt the imposing grandeur of the place.
Will this be the place I will spend my DSFL career?
Their logos were sick (in a good way)! And the black and gold uniforms really worked very well. He saw kdr, the scout who interviewed him for the DSFL draft and waved at him. Kdr yelled from afar “Hey kid if you need any help, call me!”. Roy waved in agreement, but there was no more time to stay in Portland.
Wearing the Pythons colors and logo would be awesome. Roy started imagining himself celebrating Interceptions and pick-sixes on those black and gold uniforms. His phone interrupted him: time to drive to Minnesota.
Roy got on the bus to stone cold Minnesota. Roy wasn’t a fan of the cold, but if the Grey Ducks drafted him, he would learn to love it for sure.
Roy arrived in Duluth. Duluth was right next to Lake Superior, perfect for outdoor activities and a great view of the legendary body of water.
Reading the wiki Roy learned that the Grey Ducks were also a foundational franchise of the DSFL, they started in San Antonio but moved to Duluth in 2034. Their stadium name is The Quack Shack, which is an awesome name for a stadium. They have an historical rivalry with the Kansas City Coyotes. They won six Ultimini Bowls and lost seven, which rounds up to a nice .500 percentage, which is very impressive at the Ultimini.
Their logo was solid, in some way reminding him of the cool Mighty Ducks logo. Their uniforms in Blue, Dark Grey and Light Grey seemed really spiffy. Roy could see himself playing in those colors for sure. Roy saw their mascot “Sir Quacks a Lot” and went to say hi. This was probably the coolest mascot in the game.
He saw Dunkler, the scout that visited with him for the DSFL draft. Dunkler waved at him and said “hey come visit our locker room soon!”, Roy waved back in accordance but pointed at his wrist watch: he had to postpone the visit, because it was time to take a flight to London.
Roy got on the plane, and took the ten-hour flight to London.
The London Royals were established in 2036, they only have two victories at the Ultimini Bowl, and three losses. Not too shabby for such a young franchise.
Their logo was great and their black and gold uniforms were awesome, it remined him of a New Orleans team that he loved so much in his youth.
Roy took a walk in the Royal Wembley Stadium, and was enjoying it, but was suddenly interrupted... The fish and chips he ate on the plane was doing some work in his bowels and he had to rush to the hotel where he was going to spend the night.
It wasn’t a fun night.
