With the 11th overall pick in the Season 11 DSFL Draft, the Portland Pythons selected wide receiver Errol Maddox out of University of Maryland. Maddox was the Pythons' third pick of the draft and he was the third receiver to come off the board in this draft. Maddox already had some ties to Portland before the draft. The Pythons picked him up on waivers last season after Week 10 of the season. He got to play with the Pythons for their final four regular season games and their two playoff games. He finished the regular season with 64 receiving yards on 12 receptions and recorded 2 catches for 19 yards during the playoffs, both during the championship game. Maddox will look to make a bigger impact for the Pythons in a larger role this season.
Wide receiver was a position of need for the Pythons coming into the draft. They had one of the most talented wide receiver groups in the league last season but lost some talent with Felix Hasselhoff and Josh Parker getting called up to the NSFL this season. They bring back Sunnycursed who will be the highest TPE wide receiver in the DSFL this year and looks like he could be the best receiver in the league this season. However, Sunnycurse was the only returning wide receiver on the Pythons' roster so they needed some other receivers to surround him with. Maddox will now have the chance to win the Python's #2 receiver role this season. If he can develop into a top receiver, the Pythons will be able to give opposing secondaries nightmares with the duo of Maddox and Sunnycursed. With opposing defenses having to focus on containing Sunnycursed, it should free up Maddox and give him the chance to make some plays early on. Maddox should be able to slot in to a important role right away with the Pythons and will hopefully be able to make an early impact for them.
So far in the preseason, Maddox already looks to be showing some good signs of improvement. After missing his last season of college with an injury, Maddox was still trying to get back into game shape during his DSFL playing time last year and wasn't back to 100% yet. He didn't show the same level of explosive potential he had showed in college as he had just 64 yards on 12 reception, averaging just 5.3 yards per reception. However, in his four preseason games, he had 169 yards on 13 receptions, gaining over 100 more yards on just 1 more reception and upping his average to 13 yards per reception. He also had 3 touchdowns in the preseason after not recording any last season. It remains to be seen if he can keep up this level of play in more meaningful games, but his preseason performance is a good sign that Maddox could be a big contributor for the Pythons this season. The preseason also came before Maddox's offseason improvements took full effect, so he could elevate his play even further in the regular season once his progression is able to take effect.
Maddox joins the Pythons as part of a strong draft class. The Pythons had two first round picks that they used to bring in two of the draft's best defensive players in safety Axel Hornbacher and linebacker Charlie Trout. The Pythons didn't have a second or fourth round pick, so their next pick after selecting Maddox came in the fifth round when they selected another wide receiver in Sam Hardwick to give them another weapon in the passing game. In the sixth round, they selected Logan Lejune to give them another linebacker to pair with Trout. The Pythons had two picks in the seventh round which they used to bring in running back Beauregard Smallwood-Chess and kicker Roderick Castleberry. They brought in another kicker in the eighth round by selecting Eric Legstrong. Finally, they capped off the draft by selecting safety Grayson Wayne in the ninth round. The Pythons also have a strong crop of returning talent. In addition to Sunnycursed, they will bring back two more playmakers on offense in quarterback Johnson Cox III and running back Slim Shady. They also bring back one of their top defensive players with safety Dan Schneider returning to the DSFL. The Pythons have a well rounded team with both new talent and returning talent on both sides of the ball. After falling short in the Ultimini game last season, the Pythons will look to make it back and come away as champions this time and they should have a good chance to do so with their talented roster.
Overall, it looks like the Portland Pythons will be a good fit for Errol Maddox. He'll get the chance to make an impact early on for the team as they look to have a strong season this year. The season is getting ready to begin and the Pythons are looking to get off to a strong start.
