With the new trend of inventing stats named after fictional women, I've decided to create my own metric.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]It will be called:[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]CHL/OE[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"][/div]
"Wait, so what does it stand for?"
Cute
Hot
Lovable
On-Field
Experience
"Sounds stupid and makes very little sense."
You right, how about this:
Character
Likeability
(compared to)
On-Field
Excellence
"I'll allow it"
I'm sure you will
"What will this metric actually track?"
I'm glad you asked, audience surrogate!
My plan for CL/OE is to track how good sim league players are compared to how they are portrayed in media and other places. Basically, in this fictional world we've created here, are they overrated?
So the first way to decide how this works is to see how to quantify a player's "likeability".
Clearly this means that I will grade each player myself.
"Isn't that biased?"
FUCK YOU, it's biased! I'm in charge of this thing! My metric, my rules!
Anyway, I will be basing these scores on three standards:
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]1. Render and other Visual Concepts[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]You gotta look the best to be the best and while it never really has anything to do with anything, your render is important when it comes to your player's marketability. Who your render is and how close they are to your character or even just simple originality with your character can make a difference to how our fictional fans would perceive your player.[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]3. Talkitive-ity[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Basically, do they ever say anything? Many people have players who are always talked about, but almost never speak for themselves. How can our poor fictional fans build any sort of relationship with these players if there's nothing to relate to? Sure, there are many successful athletes who have quiet success as opposed to those who are always talking, but I feel like those who do speak should be applauded because that's the basis of character building. Just to remind you, the three tenants of Character Development are: What a character does, what other characters say about that character, and what a character says. Clearly, this is a big part of how the audience would see this player and it should be measured as such.[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]3. Ego[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]This part is fairly complicated. It's the reason why I didn't have a 1-10 score for everything because this can have negative value or positive value depending on the part on performances. A "nice guy" and a "diva" could both have the same exact popularity, so I guess this part is for deciding which way the needle goes. Do they give to charity or have some sort of inspiring story? Are they disrespectful to other players and talk shit all day long? Honestly, I still don't quite know what I'm doing with this one, but I'll figure it out later down in this article.[/div]
Now that we've gone through personality traits, let's see how this metric will handle whether or not the bite matches the bark.
Basically, it'll be by position on a normalized distribution for the most important stats for that position. Then give scores from 1-10 based on their position on the distribution and use that.
It's fairly simple to explain, but an absolute BITCH to calculate.
So what do we do when we get these four scores? Well, first we're gonna put Ego on the side and then get the average between Visuals and Talkitivity, with added weight to Talkitivity (let's give it a x3)
You know what, I'm gonna stop this for a second and just grab an example to use real quick. enjoy an intermission!
Alright, we are back with LEROY JENKINS. A player who I call legendary, but never really put up numbers. On the other hand, he did have quite a bit written about him and he had a major presence on his team in universe.
In terms of visual imaging, there wasn't much going on for Leroy. His render changed every few days and while the renders were impressive when standing alone, the fact that there was no consistency gives us a hard task here to really get out what we really want to see in a player's visual branding.
I give him about a 4/10 on this bit
For Talkativity, there were plenty of articles on him early on, but they faded away as time went on. But that early boost gives him an advantage, especially with the lengthy Press Conference at the beginning of his career. Also getting points is the consistency in character. Whenever he talked, he did so in the same manner as he had throughout the rest of his career. I give this boi a 7/10 for that.
Next is ego. As I said, Leroy was as consistent as they come and It appears as though his character was built to be lovable. He seems to be a bit soft-spoken and in all occasions of him speaking for himself, he's very gracious to his teammates and humble when talking about himself. In addition to that, he's confirmed to have been involved in charitable giving and that always gives you bonus points in positive ego. I give him a positive coefficient!
That's right, it's a coefficient now! Because when you're a loudmouth you add on extra bit when you're good. So if the performance average goes above 7, the coefficient kicks in. If you're a positive ego, you get a x1.5 multiplier. If you have a negative, it will depend on that 7 average. If you're above, you get a x2, but go under, you get a x0.75 to lower your score.
Trust me, this is getting very complicated, I've been writing this for several hours now.
So let's look at Leroy's performances. (Oh God, why did I do this?)
Now, about 8 or 9 hours later, after going through many different methods of determining performance, I've finally found that over the course of his career, Leroy averaged to be at about 6.89 relative to the rest of the league.
DO NOT QUESTION MY MATH, THE MATH TO GET THE LAST PARAGRAPH ALONE TOOK ME OVER FIVE HOURS!!!
So now we push this all together. The Performance is just under 7, so no coefficient bonus. In the end we get:
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]((4+7)/2)/6.89[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Simplified:[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]5.5/6.89 or a CL/OE score of 0.798[/div]
How to interpret the number is so: The closer to 1 the score is, the closer the player is to being treated the way they should be. If it's less than 1, then the specified player is actually underrated comparatively to how they actually perform in the sim. If it's higher than 1, then the player is overrated and over-hyped outside the sim.
This I've created is extremely flawed and was clearly just supposed to be a shitpost; but nearing the end of this article, which has taken up pretty much my entire Sunday, I feel like if tweaked properly it could actually be a really great definition to see how we as users treat our own players compared to what they deserve.
Either way, we can all agree that CL/OE is still better and more fun than TANY/A.
