What an exciting start for the DSFL season 14! Norfolk SeaWolves played at home both games and got their first 2 wins as an expansion team. First they beat the Kansas City Coyotes 35 to 13, with an outstanding performance by running backs Apollo Reed (98 yds, 3 touchdowns) and Dofus Jimbo (144 yds, with an 81 yard TD run). In week 2, Norfolk recovered from an 11 point deficit to win against the Portland Pythons 20 to 17 with a good day for kicker Cameron Clutch (4/5 FGs, 33 yd winning field goal) and a fierce defensive display by the team’s first round pick linebacker Allen Josh (10 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 sacks, 2 PD), as well as cornerback Tobias Chase with a key interception in the fourth quarter.
We got an opportunity to speak with Norfolk’s cornerback Lucas Knight (in 2 games he has 13 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 returned for a touchdown and 4 passes defended) after the games, who was eager to talk about the good start of the team:
What do you think of your performance for your first DSFL games?
Overall I felt great out there in the field, making tackles and getting my first interceptions in the DSFL, who would have thought that I could do that kind of stuff in my first game [laughs]. You know, the whole defense was on fire in week 1 and that pushed me to give my best effort. For week 2 we had some trouble to stop the Pythons for 3 quarters, but in the end, we just told ourselves 'we got this' and that's what transpired.
In week 1 you were named defensive player of the week, your thoughts?
It's like the craziest dream any rookie could have, go to your first game and put on a show [chuckles]. It felt fantastic, it's such an honor and I want to give credit to all of my teammates for it; I could not have done it if the offense didn't score on every chance they had or without the help from my fellow defensive players in the front seven and the D-backs.
What do you expect for the upcoming weeks 3 and 4?
Is going to be a tough test for the team. We face the Solar Bears who are thirsty for a win, we should prepare for a fight because they will be motivated to bring their best. Then we travel to Tijuana to play against the current Ultimini champs, we will need to focus on stopping Harvan if we want to have a chance to succeed. If we maintain the same rhythm for both offense and defense, I think we have a great chance to make the playoffs. I couldn't be more happy with our current situation.
There you have it, the SeaWolves will look to add a couple of wins to their record so be sure to watch DSFL Weeks 3 and 4 on March 28th at 8:00 pm EST on Twitch
