All of us in this league, at one time or another, have struggled with the decision of how we want to build our player. In fact, with the rather large rookie class, “What stat should I increase next?” is one of the most common questions sent to gms, rookie mentors, or anyone else who happens to be on discord. It is so common that TC has even done a post about what each attribute does. The response most commonly given to people is speed, speed, speed. It is clear to all of us that speed kills in this sim. What manic and I wanted to do was show this by comparing stats of a player who has everything the same with the exception of his OVR rating and his speed. To do this we increased his TPE and applied the attributes into speed only and compared them to the same individual who gained more TPE and applied it to other areas in order to increase the OVR ranking.
We did this with two players, one RB and one WR. We took the same player and had him play out 10 identical seasons with each different build and compared how he performed. As we are both members of the Yellowknife Wraiths, we chose Wraith players and their pre season 13 builds. For RB we chose AdamS’s character, Dick Wizardry. For WR we chose goilers’ build of Josh Parker.
Here is the build we used for Wizardry.
We took a base overall build of 430 and did two different things. For one group, we added 75 TPE into speed. This bumped our overall rating from 84 to 86. For the second group, we kept speed at 90, but increased strength, intelligence, agility, and hands. We used 195 TPE to do this, so 120 more than the other builds. Additionally, his OVR ranking in the sim jumped from 84 to 92. So he was a higher TPE and a higher OVR player. We then ran this through the sim for 10 complete seasons and analyzed the results. Here are Dick’s stats.
And showing his yards per carry
As you can see, OVR build and total TPE mean nothing if you don’t use them right. By just increasing speed 5 points in comparison to all the other areas, Dick improved in most categories. His attempts were very similar but his YPC was .31 higher in the fast build. This added up to over 100 yards more per season. When all is equal when it comes to Offensive Line play, yards per carry can be one of the most telling stats as it comes to successful running back play. Touchdowns remained very close with only 1 TD per season more. Surprisingly, even though his hands were better in the second build, he had only 2 more fumbles per season, plus he had more drops on fewer receptions and, and his receiving yards were similar. The moral of the story, Dick is a slightly better RB with about a season’s worth of TPE less on his build.
We did a similar test for Josh parker. For one build, we applied 75 TPE to move him from 90 to 95 in speed bumping his overall from 76 to 78. In a separate build, we kept speed at 90, but increased strength, agility, intelligence, hands, and endurance. This took us double the TPE to accomplish. The result was an increase in his overall rating to 84. Here is his build.
This is slightly less impressive as Wizardry’s change.
Parker was slightly less in total yards and Yards Per Catch, but was slightly higher in the other categories. Although all the differences were negligible. Parker was the leading receiver 8 times with the speedier build and 7 times with the better OVR build. He did have one more TD/season the faster he was, but interestingly enough some of his best TD seasons came under the higer OVR build. Though, the moral of the story is the 84 overall build costed more TPE to reach, and the stat differences were negligible.
Although speed, isn’t everything, this study shows that it is important that TPE earned is spent properly. Some attributes are essential to raise, even if it costs a lot to keep raising them, whereas some stats can be slightly ignored until last. But when it comes to runningback, speed is everything
