The DSFL Conference Championship games are in the books, with a shocking twist as we come to the end of S14.
On one hand we have a team that has had a decent year, and is getting hot at the right time. On the other, we have a contender led by a record breaking quarterback and stout defence. The journey to this moment has been full of excitement, and these playoff games were no exception. So, without further ado, lets recap the semi-final matchups.
San Antonio Marshals 21, Tijuana Luchadores 30
13-1. Unstoppable. Quoted as an "NSFL caliber team". Home field advantage. San Antonio had a stellar season, a historic one at that. How could Tijuana, who has had a respectable season themselves but nowhere on the same level, ever be able to beat them? Could the NSFL's 2nd overall pick, Corvo Havran, prove himself over the 1st, Cooter Bigsby?
Whispers of the Marshals' first round curse were streaming through the general discord. The superstitious thought that was enough to up the odds on the Luchadores' chances. And they were right.
After a 4th down stop in the 1st quarter, Tijuana was able to strike first with a field goal off the leg of Stephen Harris Jr. However, that lead wouldn't hold for long as the Marshals came right back on a connection from Bigsby to Morgan Marshall from 2 yards out.
In the 2nd quarter, following the Marshals touchdown, the Luchadores scored two TDs of their own, one a run from Forrest Gump and another a pass from Havran to Trey Moffat, to take the lead back and later capped the half with another field goal. They wouldn't look back.
In the second half, it seemed the Marshals weren't done when they scored a TD fairly quickly. But their confidence would be wiped away almost instantly as Gump ripped off a 96 yard touchdown run then next possession. Although San Antonio would score one more time, they would not be able to come back in this game. Tijuana completes the upset, taking down the Marshals 30-21.
The offensive player of the game was definitely Gump, finishing with 160 yards on 14 attempts for a whopping 11.4 yards per carry and 2 TDs. Morgan Marshall on the other side had a very respectable game as well, rushing for 117 yards and adding 37 off receptions with a touchdown. The defensive player of the game should be given to Tijuana's Cheese Jr, who made 10 tackles and added a key interception.
Portland Pythons 16, Norfolk Seawolves 13
The Pythons hyped up their defense all year. The Seawolves had the hype of Ryan Leaf. Norfolk was confident they could beat Portland. Franklin Armstrong was hell bent on proving he was the leagues best quarterback. For both teams, it was put up or shut up time.
In what had been a first quarter where the two teams constantly traded possessions, the Seawolves hit first with a field goal from Cameron Clutch. Norfolk was able to get an interception not long after, but gave the ball right back by throwing a pick to Emoji. It took until the second quarter until anyone found the endzone, when Apollo Reed of Norfolk pounded it in from one yard out.
After being shut out in the first half, the Pythons finally got on the board with a field goal, only to be answered by another FG from the Seawolves. The score would remain the same through the third quarter at 13-3 after seeing a lot of running. Some speculate Portland's rainy weather had been hindering both teams ability to pass the ball.
In the fourth quarter, the Pythons scored another 3 points to bring the game to within 7, although the outcome was looking bleak due to their inability to score on the offensive side of the ball. But, who needs offense when they've got a defense like theirs. Lanzer Grievous came up big with a Pick 6, and the XP made it a tie ball game. In this nailbiter, the final score was provided in the form of, you guessed it, another field goal by the Pythons' Dasistwirklichseinnachname (seriously, that name is too long), and the Seawolves were unable to answer. The Pythons slither on to the Ultimini after squeezing the Seawolves, 16-13.
The offensive player of the game, if there had to be one, should be either AJ Espeeyeeseetee or Brock Landers who each had 7 catches, one for 94 yards and the other for 93. With all of the great performances on defense, it is tough to figure out who to give the defensive player of the game honors to. However, because of the pivotal and impactful nature of his play, it goes to Grievous, who had 5 tackles along with his crucial pick six.
That about wraps it up, as we move closer to the Ultimini. Will the Luchadores stay hot enough to choke out Portland? Or will they be devoured by the Pythons? Tune in on Wednesday to see the exciting Championship matchup.
