In the vein of the wide receiver breakdown, I decided to do the same for starting defensive ends for each team and their respective ratings in important stats to the position.
I will start with the “big 3” stats: strength, speed, and tackling.
The strongest team is the Outlaws, putting up an average of 74. They’re closely followed by the Yeti who are averaging 72.5. The two strongest defensive ends are B. Blade and F. Wozy. The bottom of the barrel is made up of two teams that were well below the others (this trend will continue!) the Hawks have an average strength of 61 and the SaberCats aren’t far ahead with 62.5.
The fastest defensive end is also the Outlaws, with their average of 77. The Otters and Wraiths are tied for second with an average of 75. The two fastest defensive ends are A. Tomlinson and J. Tuck. The two slowest defensive end duos are the SaberCats and Hawks, both tied for an average of 70.
Finally we have tackling, which is led by the SaberCats with an average of 68.5. The Yeti are the second best tackling dup with an average of 67.5. The two worst tackling duos are the Hawks and Outlaws. The best tackling defensive ends are L. Thor, G. Taylor, and F. Wozy all with a rating of 70. The worst tackling defensive end is A. Amir with 50.
There are two lesser stats important for defensive ends: agility and endurance.
Agility is led by the Hawks at 65 and the SaberCats at 60. The least agile defensive ends are the Outlaws at 48 and the Yeti at 50.5.
The endurance is pretty close across the board, but the Hawks lead the category at 65.5 while the wraiths have the worst rating of 60.
The below is a combined metric that weights the "big 3" attributes but still takes into account the less important ones.
Otters 339.5833
Wraiths 337.8333
Yeti 336.8333
Outlaws 334.9167
SaberCats 330.25
Hawks 309.9167
One thing is clear, the Hawks defensive ends are significantly worse than the rest of the league. The difference between the 5th worst defensive ends and the worst is greater than the difference between the 5th and the worst. The rest of the group is all pretty comparable.
As individuals the defensive ends rank as follows (with stats):
Now let's see how ratings correlate with sacks, which is the primary goal of a defensive end right?
Note: Red=outlaws, black=wraiths, orange=otters, blue=yeti, green=sabercats, purple=hawks
Ok, clearly some things aren't right here, So we'll take a look at tackles for loss, playing the run is important too right?
We'll call sacks and tackles for loss "impact plays." They're the kind of thing that helps out a defense and kills offensive drives. It's hard to recover from a negative play.
So what does all of this tell us?
The Hawks DEs are definitely out performing their ratings. Maybe this has something to do with the supporting cast or play calling. These are topic that will be further explored in the future.
It's also important to note that the most disruptive defensive end currently in the league looks to be Fuego Wozy. With 12 "impact plays," two more than Jayce Tuck and Jason Spearhead who are fighting for second with 10 each. The least disruptive defensive ends are in a three way tie, Taylor, Teagarden, and Thor all have only had 4 "impact plays" in five games. While Amir is out performing his low rating with 6 such plays.
Stay tuned for future analysis that will dive deeper into snap counts and the players and play styles surrounding the defensive ends of the league. If you have questions, feel free to post them and I will try to address them in future articles.
