The league is full of talent at the offensive line position. At the start of the season there were questions over who was truly the best prospect at the position; Ben Longshaw was thrown around as was Angus Winchester. But thus far in the season one has risen to the top of the pile of sweat, stink, and fat. Angus Winchester is 6’6” and 330 lbs, though he looks to be comfortably over 400 lbs. He’s built like a brick shithouse and likes to get his hands on men and keep them there. After 9 weeks of play Angus leads the league in pancakes by a significant margin with 43. More importantly, Winchester has not allowed a single sack on his quarterback(s). Winchester appears to be the perfect for the power running scheme the Otters look to be developing in Orange County and we wouldn’t be surprised to see him continue to stack up the pancakes.
During Week 9 Angus Winchester put forth his most impressive performance of the season in a losing effort against the Arizona Outlaws. In one of the league’s premier match-ups Angus lined up against the league’s sack leader, Jayce Tuck, and kept his quarterback clean for the entire game. In fact, Tuck has recorded a sack in every game except for those where he lined up against Angus, an even more impressive stat for the monster of a man.
At this point in the season, it is clear Angus Winchester is the best offensive lineman in the league. I do not think any other guy can really hold a candle to the stats and performances he has been putting up thus far. His size and effort, coupled with a strong supporting cast on the offensive line with Boyd and Clegane and the league’s premier blocking tight end George Wright Jr, quite frankly nobody else really stands a chance at surpassing him statistically this season. I would go further and say that if Winchester is able to hold onto the sack-less streak through the end of the season, it is likely going to go down a historic season for an offensive lineman in the league.
To all of the new offensive line talent coming into the league this season, if you want to look at somebody to mirror your game after, I would encourage you to look to Winchester for guidance. There is not an offensive lineman in the league that is more complete in terms of pass protection or run blocking.
We were able to snag a few words from defensive end Jayce Tuck on the league’s best offensive lineman:
CK: What do you think about Angus Winchester?
JT: Angus Winchester? That guy is a competitor. He goes out there every game, for every play, and competes. I’ve lined up against just about every guy in the league now and I don’t think anyone is doing what he is doing as consistently as he is.
CK: Can you tell us about the talk between you to? Is their bad blood?
JT: No bad blood on my end. I respect a guy that puts in time in the weight room and the film room. Angus can back up his talk, unlike some other guys in the league. I haven’t cracked the code on him yet, but I’m getting there. I don’t mind lining up against the best. Plus, a win always makes everything good.
CK: Anything to say to the other pass rushers in the league about Winchester?
JT: If you’re not lining up against the best, you can’t be the best.
CK: It looks like you guys play the Otters in three weeks, is that day circled on your calendar?
JT: No. I look forward to getting another crack at Winchester, but I’m about helping my team win a championship, not beating Winchester. I’ve got two other good guys I’ve got to start looking at so we can get some more wins.
