Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 3 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
And yesterday was Draft Day! Our star got to the draft with moderate expectations, but those were completely thrown out of the window when the Portland Pythons selected Jay Cue with the 5th overall pick of the draft. Our NSFL/DSFL specialist Dirk Kerbstreit went to Portland to catch up with Jay, as he settled on the city that will see him play for at least one season.
Dirk – So, first of all, congrats on being selected by the Portland Pythons, Jay. Top 5 in the draft, were you surprised?
Jay – I was Dirk, a little bit. My mind was set that the QBs would be drafted on later rounds, because teams would be reinforcing other areas, but then I got the call from the Pythons early on, but I’m obviously extremely happy that they trusted me to be their first pick of the S17 DSFL Draft.
Dirk – So, now you are with the Pythons, in Portland. Was that your favorite team to land on?
Jay – Like I said a few days ago, I did not have any preferences on the team itself, I just wanted one with a good locker room. But I had a feeling that the Pythons were looking at me with high interest, that’s even why I entertained and accepted the invitation to stay and train at University of Oregon, close by. So even the move was pretty straightforward, couple of hours on the road and I’m all set.
Dirk – And your first impressions on the team?
Jay – Nothing but the best Dirk. State of the art facilities, amazing staff, my new teammates welcome of me and the rookies was great, I can not wait to get on the field and get started. I’ll be able to develop my game here, help the Pythons to get the Ultimini and ultimately get drafted into the NSFL. I wish some of my other fellow prospects could be here, but it’s part of the game that we get separated so early. Maybe we will meet again in a few seasons, who knows?
Dirk – You know you will have big shoes to fill at Portland, right?
Jay – Definitely Dirk, but to be honest, that makes me work even harder. It’s like a chip on my shoulder, but if I have half of the success that Franklin Armstrong had here, we will be fine. Maybe I can beat his record on the playoffs! (laughs) I’ll do my best so that the Pythons team and fans see me as a worthy successor.
Dirk – Well, thanks for having us Jay, looking forward to see you and the Portland Pythons rookies on the field.
Jay – See you next time Dirk.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
