Secondary Measures exists for the purpose of highlighting defensive backs, whose performance is often hidden in the typical box score format. What we do here is look at each play in which a corner was in pass coverage, to show what his impact on the field truly was. In our Week 1-2 analysis, Louisiana Purchase showed an outstanding performance in Week 2 against the rival Tijuana Luchadores, allowing the minimum 0.0 QB rating when being targeted. Let's see if Purchase could keep that momentum going in Week 3-4.
Week 3 - vs Kansas City
1Q - 14:53 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 10 Yards
1Q - 14:11 - Pass Incomplete intended for D. Banks II - *Interception*
The Coyotes game plan seemed to be to target Purchase early, which proved to be a mistake, and Purchase forces a turnover in the first minute of the game.
1Q - 10:53 - Pass Incomplete dropped by D. Banks II
Note: Purchase was primarily assigned to cover D. Banks II throughout the game. With 7:54 remaining in the 1st quarter, Banks caught a 22 yard touchdown pass. However, Purchase was blitzing on the play, not in coverage. Therefore, this play will not be factored into Purchase's coverage stats
1Q - 3:29 - Pass Incomplete intended for D. Banks II - *Interception*
Purchase again makes Kansas City pay and picks up his second INT of the quarter.
2Q - 9:25 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 8 Yards
2Q - 6:40 - Pass Incomplete intended for D. Banks II - Broken up by Purchase
Purchase gets his hands on another bad pass, but this time can not haul it in
2Q - 1:39 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 8 Yards
Kansas City clearly made some adjustments at halftime, as Purchase was targeted 7 times in the first half, with disastrous results for the Coyotes. Purchase was only targeted once in the second half.
4Q - 2:25 - Pass Incomplete dropped by D. Banks II
Summary
Traditional Stats: 3 Tackles, 3 Passes Defended, 2 Interceptions
Coverage Stats: 8 Targets - 30.8% Target Rate (Targets/Plays in Coverage), 3 Receptions, 26 Yards, 0 Touchdowns, 2 Interceptions, 7.3 Opp. QB Rating When Targeted
Analysis: Purchase shows his Week 2 performance was no fluke. He has also showcased some impressive ball skills, forcing 4 turnovers in San Antonio's first 3 games.
Week 4 - at Kansas City
1Q - 9:33 - Pass Incomplete intended for D. Banks II
1Q - 9:30 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 42 Yards
Terrible read by Purchase. A simple out and up route by Banks, Purchase bit hard on a simple pump fake and tried to jump an out route that never came.
1Q - 6:02 - Pass Incomplete intended for D. Banks II - Broken up by Purchase
Interestingly, despite his Week 3 dominance, Kansas City went right back to the game plan of targeting Purchase early and often. This showed to be much more successful this week.
1Q - 3:52 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 8 Yards
2Q - 9:08 - Pass Incomplete dropped by D. Banks II
Note: The Marshals got burned just the prior week as Kansas City threw right into a CB blitz for a long touchdown. Purchase was sent on another blitz this week with 1:44 remaining in the first half, and D. Banks II was left wide open yet again for an 11 yard touchdown pass. This play will not be factored into Purchase's coverage stats
4Q - 14:42 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 24 Yards - *Touchdown*
Purchase simply got beat by Banks and allows his first touchdown of the season
4Q - 10:07 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 5 Yards
4Q - 5:47 - Pass Complete to D. Banks II - 13 Yards
At this point in a close game the Marshals desperately needed a stop, but Purchase was once again beat by Banks for a first down
Summary
Traditional Stats: 5 Tackles, 1 Pass Defended
Coverage Stats: 8 Targets - 27.6% Target Rate (Targets/Plays in Coverage), 5 Receptions, 92 Yards, 1 Touchdown, 0 Interceptions, 141.7 Opp. QB Rating When Targeted
Analysis: Purchase has just been wildly inconsistent this season, with two outstanding games, one mediocre game, and this bad performance in Week 4. Banks is a top-tier WR, but that's no justification when we just saw what happened in the prior week. San Antonio will look for more consistency out of Purchase going forward.
Season Coverage Stats: 30 Targets - 25.2% Target Rate (Targets/Plays in Coverage), 15 Receptions, 194 Yards, 1 Touchdown, 3 Interceptions, 42.2 Opp. QB Rating When Targeted
