The season is beginning to come to a close and the playoff race is still tighter than ever. I thought we'd see some separation by now, but its still anyone's game. Lets get into another week of fan reviews and see what transpired in week nine.
@ 17-34, Wraiths win. The Wraiths imposed their dominance over the conference in a game that was never really close. Off the back of a huge day by Cooter Bigsby, the Wraiths jumped off to an early lead and never once looked back. He threw 20 of 33 for 284 yards and four scores in a game where they were trying to run the clock out early. With help from Jerrod Canton, Nate Swift, and Tommy Helanen, who all had potential standout games of their own, Cooter was able to dominate this game for four quarters. Mix this with another defensive standout performance from Danny Grithead and the Wraiths show that when their stars show up to play, there are few in the league that can match them. On the other side, Sam Torenson did his best to try and make the Butchers competitive. With 109 yards and a touchdown, he fought for every yard he could and was one of the few highlights for Chicago. The only other was Kazimir Oles. His two catches for 88 yards made it clear he should have been targeted more as he got open deep a couple times, but it was his 73 yards returning kicks stack onto this that made him one of the bigger play makers for Chicago in this one. The Butchers didn't show a lot of life in this one as these guys lost what may be one of the more important games in the season. The Wraiths have an easier schedule going forward and if everything goes as predicted, it looks like Chicago was locked out of first place in the conference with this one.
@ 17-22, Yeti win. As the guys out there in Colorado like to say, Happy Yeti noises all around in this one. This was a tightly contested game that could have went either way all the way up until the final minutes. Falconi and McDummy had a viscous competition to see which quarterback could be more effective at throwing the game away. If you'd told me Falconi would be the one to win that competition, I'd have called you a liar. Yet here we are in a world where it took one of our top season 16 quarterbacks playing worse than McDummy to throw a game away. There isn't really a lot to say here. No one in Philadelphia showed up to this game. Their only standout may have been Gekyume Stokeley and his 15 tackles, but a lot of those tackles came after being burned in coverage. Colorado didn't look much better, but they at least had Terry Taffy's 107 yards and five yards a carry to set up McDummy for one of his best games of the season. He only had 83.3 quarterback rating and no stats that really stood out, but the Yeti don't need McDummy to be spectacular. They need him to be right at average to win games and that is what they put together here. This put Philadelphia a game back and there are only four games left in the season. I'm not sure there is any more room for mistakes if they want to make the postseason in this one. Meanwhile for Colorado, I think one more win makes them a playoff team and they still have two winnable games on their schedule.
@ 23-10, Hawks win. This game was absurdly close through two quarters of play until the Hawks finally pulled away in the third. Easton Cole had a pretty rough outing with his 9.3 yards per completion, no scores, and a pick that netted him a quarterback rating of 63.4. Ashley Owens had a pretty average for himself with only 105 yards and no scores. Normally that scoreline would be enough, but he was the only player on this entire offense that produced anything at all. Austin had no standouts whatsoever and yet they remained competitive in this game off the back of a solid defensive unit. So while normally we wouldn't have anything positive to take away from this, Austin is well aware that they are absurdly close to taking that next step. The biggest offensive standout for the Hawks was Dorfus Jimbo who had a solid day rushing with his 113 yards and 5.4 yards per carry. Touchdowns still elude him though and his ability to power it in at the goal line has been a bit weakness of his so far this season. Still, he did enough to set his kicker up for nine points on the day and that was enough to put the nail in the coffin thanks to a defensive outing that saw Baltimore rack up five sacks and five passes defended. Austin has been competitive in almost every game they've played this season, even against teams that were expected to step on the snek. With a bit more development, this team can come in next season looking like a real contender. Meanwhile for the Hawks, this game puts them firmly back into the playoff race as they are now two games up on last place.
@ 27-34, Second Line win. This game was the definition of playing down to your competition as Arizona finds their second loss of the year against the team in dead last place in the league. The story of this game rest entirely on Andrew Reese's shoulders as he had perhaps the worst game of any quarterback in any game in the league this season. 24 of 56, 249 yards, no scores, and three interceptions gave Andrew Reese a 34.7 quarterback rating in a game where he hand fed New Orleans the game. Slim Shady was the player this loss actually hurt the most. In a season where he's had his ups and downs, he played one of his best today with 151 all purpose yards and two scores. He simply couldn't overcome Reese's choke job. I have to give the Second Line's defense credit. They played lights out today and completely locked down the secondary, allowing them to win a game in which Stan Francisco went 18 of 46. For the Outlaws, this loss holds them off from locking in first place for at least another week, so they can't get complacent. For New Orleans, they are playing for pride and after knocking off the Ultimus champions I imagine their locker room had a lot of optimism they can take going forward.
@ 16-33, Otters win. I can't quite get a read on this Otters squad. How does one team look like they're in a rebuild one week and like they're a championship contender the next? Orange County is a fascinating case and I think their success or failure all depends on how their rookie quarterback plays one week to the next. In this game, he went 17 of 35 for 269 yards, three touchdowns, and a single turnover. It was enough for him to post a 91.2 quarterback rating that was one of the better ratings on the week. He played well and so the Otters rolled. The better he gets, the more accurately he throws, the scarier Orange County will become. Meanwhile San Jose was again abysmal running the football and Joliet L. Christ couldn't do enough to get the offense moving. He had started this season look like an MVP candidate, but the last two weeks haven't looked good for him. If the SaberCats can't find a rushing attack this season, I don't know that Christ can carry them in the playoffs. Both of these teams are in a heated race for championship contention, but both have glaring weakness that separate them from the top teams in the league. They can still improve with four weeks left in the season, so they can still make a solid run yet.
I really do enjoy writing these, guys. It might actually be my favorite segment I do because we're honestly all here for the sim. We're here to see the games and to see our players and teams succeed or fail. I have a blast looking at the games and seeing who the sim bless and who the sim cursed in a specific week and looking at how seasons are impacted. I hope guys continue to enjoy reading them and I'll keep trying to pump them out as long as you guys do!
